Thanks! This is re-assuring to watch. I live in a 45 yr. old trailer on social security and do almost all my own maintenance. My sink plugs up maybe once a year no matter how darned careful I am. I thought I had it the other day when at least it would drain but slowly. But no, it plugged tight yesterday again. So here I am again, under the sink with a hand-operated snake turning, turning, turning... I am down almost 40' now and swear I am going to make it all the way this time. Your video though was clear and easy to understand and I am sure is helpful to many with these dreadful dilemas. Your snake is a gem, btw! Thanks again.

Well done video! I rented that same snake to clean out my kitchen sink drain line. DIY'er's should stick with a manual feed machine like this one. You get a better sense of the clog and progress. And there is little chance of over torqueing the cable which can snap it when you use a motor driven power feed. My drain pipe into the wall is 2" I.D. This rental unit was ideal for that as it said it was for a range of 1 1/2" to 3".

After trying Drano and a plunger on a double kitchen sink, I was almost going to call a plumber when as an afterthought I got some Romex electrical wire - not the thick rigid stuff but the lighter weight - doubled it up with a tight bend at one end, and used it as a snake, pushing it through the main pipe. I got my clog after a few tries and it worked great at no cost, except the plunger and Drano.

I have a single sink with a KitchenAid underneath. My problem is at the flanges are not as Loose as they appear to be on these videos. The kitchen remodel is 20 years old and has never had any drainage issues. My downline is only 6 feet from the clog, butthose flanges are really Gunked on there.. what dissolves the Plumber's goop? Nice video. I need to clear under my sink and fortunately my disposal is empty I have a wet dry vac. I'm so glad to be able to look on KZbin

Great video with good details and tips. I would, however, after pulling the snake out and before running the water, pour about a half pound of baking soda and then pour two cups of white vinegar down the drain, followed by 1 or 2 gallons of boiled water. That will help flush any condensed grease remaining inside the pipes; which caused the clog in the first place. Advice: never pour cooking oil in the sink. If it is some from a roasting pan, throw in the trash as much as you can; if it is from deep frying, let it cool, pour it in a disposable container -empty tomato sauce can or other- put in the fridge or freezer until it condenses, and then throw everything in the trash. The baking soda and vinegar steps is a good thing to do at least once a year; for the cold regions of the country, 2 or 3 times a year.

Can you explain what mixing vinegar (acetic acid) and baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) does? You realize that one is an acid and one is a base and they'll neutralize each other ultimately forming sodium acetate (the liquid stuff in instant hot packs that turns hard when used) and CO2. Fortunately sodium acetate is extremely water soluble so I don't think this can cause clogs alone, not in water drains at least. Think it's the pressure buildup? Well probably not because drain pipes are not sealed systems and you're not building up meaningful air pressure unless you block the drain opening and any other diversions between the drain and the clog. You *can* use air pressure to clear clogs, but you have to be very aware of the types of pipes you got. This is something I'd leave a plumber to do; If they blow out your pipes, it's on them...Hopefully they're bonded. So how does baking soda and vinegar clear the clog? It probably didn't. It was probably just be the 1 or 2 gallons of boiling water you said you used. Neither diluted store-bought cooking vinegar (typically 5 percent acetic acid) or baking soda will affect fats in oils in a meaningful way by themselves. They will do nothing on solid organic waste buildup either. In fact if you mix vinegar and fats/oils, you get a basic vinaigrette which is a type of salad dressing. Now, let's be fair to vinegar. While low concentrations (5 to 10%) can help with minor mineral buildup in a coffee machine or something, it won't be much for whatever is built up in drain pipes. At 11% concentrations, it can start to do some damage to organic materials (like your skin and eyes) and over 20% can quickly eat away at aluminum, iron, and some other metals. You can easily get higher concentrations over 30% or even up to 75%. Do NOT play with this stuff unless you know what you're doing. It is significantly more dangerous than you think and the fumes alone can wreck you. Will concentrated vinegar (>30%) clear drains? I'm willing to bet it'd help clear the clog and will cut through oils and grease, but unless you know what your pipes are made out of all the way to your municipal sewage pipe, I'd be hesitant on using it; It will dissolve iron which are a common type of pipe. What about baking soda? If you dump baking soda down your drain, well, you just put baking soda down your drain. Will this enhance drain cleaning abilities over boiling or hot water alone? Probably a little, but not anywhere close to enough to making a difference in a real clog. This is because baking soda is slightly caustic and will begin to saponify the fats (literally converting them into soap). A lot of the literature I'm reading suggests that baking soda is terribly inefficient at saponifying oils. If you did see it in soap-making, it's usually because it was used to create sodium hydroxide by heating it to convert it to calcium carbonate and then mixing it with slaked lime (calcium hydroxide) which eventually created sodium hydroxide, or lye which is masterfully efficient in saponifying fats. Lye is also used in many chemical drain openers. Tl;dr: Stop spreading the idea that mixing baking soda and vinegar is a magic cleaner/drain opener. Mixing both neutralizes the unique benefits they'd have by themselves. Furthermore, it may even make your problem worse in some situations. Enjoy your backed up sink or toilet volcano!

@@MasterThief117 I'm sure you are right as i read it before. But desperate times calls for desperate means. And i used this technique. Baking soda diluted with water. Let it sit for 10 min. Vinegar, let it sit for 10 min.for good measure, i added salt. And then boiling water over and over. It has been 2 days, i tried many stuff and it was my last resort before calling the plumber. And it worked. So maybe only the salt and vinegar and hot water did someting. I already need to replace my washing machine, could not afford a plumber. Edit : but i have to say that salt (big one) dilutes way better than baking soda. So i will use that in the future. Oh and the little volcano.was.pretty cool to see but pretty useless lol

I have the same situation with the plugging of both drains, but my plumbing does not look like that. I have the huge trap on the regular kitchen sink side but I do not have a horizontal pipe connecting to my garbage disposal. Basically, my set up is split From the wall. I always kind of knew there was some thing arising, because when I would garbage disposals a full sink full of water, it would rise up on the other side with this disgusting crud water.

Once the you think the drain is cleared , I like to fill the sinks up with hot water. Once the sinks are full, pull the plug and check the speed the water drains. If the drain is truly cleared you will see a small whirlpool form and hear a sucking noise very close to the end of the emptying

My clog happened on Christmas day 2022 and where it was clogged was under the cement basement floor lucky i have a 50' snake to go down the pipe as the clean out for the pipe was 3" from the floor and when i pulled out the snake out of the pipe the snake was coved in black sludge here's a tip but the drain plugs in the sink so when you unscrew the P-Trap you only have to deal with the water in the pipes and if you have a SHOP VAC suck the water out of the sink and pipe before you unscrew the P-Trap

He rented it at Home Depot. Home depot sells used rental tools when it is time to replace the equipment. Most tools get sold around 30 months of rental lifetime in their possession. In those 30 months, the rental lifetime for the snakes is about 100 rentals and they are kept in good condition. The price is about 45-55% from new. The rental tools are sold because they replace the equipment on a regular basis not because they have been rented too much. I worked at Home Depot renting and repairing them.

What does the kitchen sink vent have to do with it being plugged. Isn't that just for sewer gases?
@pasqualeparente9776
@pasqualeparente9776 Жыл бұрын
The vent is needed for plumbing to work properly. Do you remember the glass experiment in school where you put a glass in a bucket of water turn the glass to the side so the glass can fill with water. Then while holding the glass upside down you lift the glass slightly out of the bucket and the water in the glass is higher than the water in the bucket... Well the vacuum at the top of the glass is keeping the water from falling out of the glass.

I am having the exact same problem with my kitchen sink! I've tried EVERYTHING to get this clog removed to no avail !!! With that being said I know exactly what you had to deal with !!! NIGHTMARE FROM HELL !!!! I went to home depot and just bought a half inch × 50 foot auger cable, I ran it till I just couldn't fit anymore cable in the drain which was approximately 41 feet and I backed it out. The mess it created on my kitchen floor was horrible and absolutely disgusting !!! I fit the pipe's back together, boiled 2 pot's of scalding hot water and poured them down the drain only to find out that the clog is still there, I'm at my witt's end and I wanted to ask you if you only had to run your cable once or numerous time's? Now I've got to clean this nasty mess up and start all over again !!! Can you get back to me and let me know how many time's did you run yours and did you intermittently stop and back it out a little back & forth or did you just hit it head on and didn't look back? I would greatly appreciate it if you could respond back my friend, I'm up to my ear's in muck and could use a bit of advice, thanks in advance !
