If you retest the acid, you should try another batch with acid and H2O2. I wouldn't recommend it for drain cleaning but you'll have a new winner for sure.

I used to work for rotorooter and they constantly pushed us to sell their brand “drain cleaner” at 52$ a gallon. We all knew it didn’t really do anything and we could snake the line in 10 minutes anyway. I had a late call for clogged main line and vaguely threw it out there that we had this stuff that might help. The customer asked if I had the MSDS sheet on it which surprised me. She said she was a chemist so if she was going to buy it she wanted to know exactly what it was. I did have the sheet and she scanned it, looked me dead in the eye and said, “You expect me to pay 52$ for soapy water?” I told my boss at our weekly meeting with all employees in attendance and he said she didn’t know what she was talking about, keep selling it. We all knew it was a rip-off

Drain cleaners are a ripoff. There was a roto-rooter, young guy, one time cleaning out the yard line next door to where I was working. He saw me at my truck and came over an asked for a little advice. I could tell he was new, he said his cable was hung up. He had a 1500 with a cutter head. I went over and keep bumping it an finally got it backed out, looked at the head then measured the links and gave him the bad news that he most likely punched thru the riser. Don't know how that ended up.

Chemist here. Always look at an MSDS will tell you what is in a product then if you do not know what it is google it and you can read up on if the chemical is any good especially for the task you need. If you are talking about roto rooter pipe shield then it is trash. Looked at the MSDS and it would be comparable to the blue sticks in this video.

@@MH-ty7fb Yeah i do not doubt you. I'm just saying that someone who has no prior use of the product the MSDS says a lot. Pretty much their ingredient list is a heavily watered down version of the useless enzyme cleaners. Something you can buy for less than 5 bucks and they want to add water to it and sell for what i have seen on their website $62. Yes it's junk but an MSDS can really help if you have no experience with a product as most of the time the chemicals in the product are well documented. Pipe Shield uses a "proprietary" special blend of shit herbs and spices in an ultra low concentration %99 of it is water lol..

45 years ago I had a seriously clogged bathtub drain. I tried several OTC products to no avail. My Uncle owned a hardware store at the time. He had a product in a red bottle called “Liquid Fire”. The name itself sounded “powerful”. I was told to be very careful with it. Getting home I went straight to the tub. Poured the contents right into the standing water over the drain. Almost immediately I could see something happening. Soon the water level began to go down and smoke was starting to come out of the overflow and the water just went “whoosh” in with lots of smoke and was all gone. I started to run the water to dispense the fumes. The drain was draining, water and water was flowing. After I was certain there were no more fumes I got a flashlight to look down the drain. Turns out the flashlight was not necessary. I could see sunlight and the ground under the house! Yep. Liquid Fire ate through the metal drain pipe. 😂 I went outside the house to where the bathroom was and there was a trail of burned grass eaten away from the house about 10 feet in length. Now I only had to worry about critters coming into the house through the “drain”. BUT, that is a story for another day! 😂😂😂

Christopher Draheim My singular experience with Liquid Fire was in 1982. I imagine that it’s highly likely that at some point in time since 1982 the chemical formula for Liquid Fire has been modified or even changed substantially since that time because of revisions in State and Federal Laws. It may be that only the name “Liquid Fire” may be the same but that the modern chemical formulation is likely quite different and probably bears few similarities to the 1982 version I used long ago.

I just did a web search for Liquid Fire MSDS. Looks like it's just sulfuric acid with a corrosion inhibitor. Of course, an MSDS won't tell you anything about the formulation, just the nature of the main ingredients.

@@nickr3441 draino destroys your pipes (any drain cleaner for that matter) snakes are literally what they sound like, a long metal wire that snares trapped objects in your drain which is usually hair. if a snake cant clear it out, you have bigger problems that requires a plumber to fix or pipe replacement anyways

Mr. Black, I have a question if you don’t mind answering. I have a garden tub that drips every now and then. I had a plumber to my home and it stopped till the next time I used the tub. Then it dripped for a 4-5 days then stopped. The tub is on the 3rd floor of my house. The plumber shrugged his shoulders when I asked why is it doing that. Do you know what’s going on and or how I can tell my plumber how to do his job (😉)? If it was a normal sink I’d go under and look at the fittings but it’s a garden tub so it’s hard to get to.

I was a plumber for years and owned and operated my own Plumbing company. Although there are probably other brands that work, "Clobber" was what I seen to work the best. In saying this, using a chemicl drain cleaner is also a last resort, using mechanical methods, most often a mechanical auger, was my preferred method if cleaning the p-trap did not solve the problem. Using chemicals has many drawbacks and caution needs to be used as it is not only making contact with them can be extremely dangerous and can cause permanant damage to the skin and eyes, but they can also create extremely dangerous fumes that can cause serious injury. It is important to use chemical resistant gloves and wear eye protection when using these types of chemicals. Another consideration is that these chemicals will cause damage to stainless steel and other metalic sinks and faucets if exposed for any length of time. It does not damage porcelain, but most often the sink strainer or pop-up assembly is metalic and will be damaged if exposed to the chemical. Additionaly, using chemicals seldom fixes the problem permantly. What it "may" do, is disolve enough of the blockage to clear a hole large enough for water to pass through. As soon as this hole opens up, the chemical flows through and is no longer in contact with the blockage, which most often tthe problem is going to return in a short amount of time. This is why using a mechanical method is preferred, because it will clean out the entire blockage. My suggestion for sinks that experience a blockage or slow water flow, is to clear the area below the sink and under the p-trap. Place a bucket or pan under the trap to catch and water and remove the p trap. Cleaning the p-trap and the pipe between the sink drain outlet and trap will often fix sink drainage problems if the blockage is experience ONLY at this location. Other types of blockages requires a different trouble shooting method. One last suggestion, if you have a septic tank, it is a good idea to make sure that it is not full prior to calling a plumber if you are having whole house issues with draining. If you call a plumber and he determines in the first 5 minutes that your problem is a full septic tank that he can not do anything about, you are still going to be charged for the service call and trip charge, his time and fuel costs still apply. Don't take a chance on wasting your money. Good luck!

Just did this, my sink was clogged I cleaned the P trap (most of the times the plug is here) Remain clogged. Then used a drain snake, problem solved. Probably it was a grease build up. Since this sink doesn't have hot water for the moment. No need to use any chemicals.

I love the test! I would suggest a safety warning for that Clobber stuff. Just move your finger down slightly and point out the large warning on the label. Very dangerous. Muriatic acid best left for the swimming pool and not in the house. In addition, any plumber would tell you not to use any of these products. For everyone who reads this: Warn your plumber if you have to call him/her out when these products do not work and be honest. I have many friends whom have been acid burned badly because they opened lines that had these products accumulated behind the clog.

ACID's are not for use for the "average consummer." Even using muriatic (HCL) in your pool to adjust the pH, can be a risky process for many..

Keep in mind when using the acids that the fumes will rust other metals inside that room very rapidly. I had to take the chrome off of towel holders. Just the vapors rust and corroded many medals. I left a bowl open in my garage one time and everything in my garage was rusted overnight

When I first got my apartment, the contractor's workers used acid to clean up the bathroom/toilet floor. The floor was sparkling clean but the chrome handle of the cistern was corroded by the acid fumes and I was fuming mad. Sorry was all I got from the contractor.

If you have had to use it several times, it is a testament as to why the do not work as permanant solutions. Chemical drain cleaners will work on the blockage until a small hole is cleared, at which time the chemical passes through that hole and is no longer in contact with the remaining blockage. It does not take long for that small hole to once again become blocked, requiring action once again. Mechanical methods, such as an auger, will clear the entire blockage making eliminating the problem or delaying the problem from re-occuring for a much longer duration of toim.

Another welcome video. Let me say though, I solved the BIG problem of clogs by understanding that a lot more was going down my drain than I had realized. I keep a water dish in my bathtub for my dogs, and the drain was clogging regularly and, honestly, the typical chemical uncloggers weren't as impressive as one would hope. I got a very SIMPLE wire screen cup (the CHEAPEST drain protector available at home depot -- from among MANY), and it works GREAT, and, as I've said, by the amount of hair it collects, I had severely under-estimated the amount of hair that had been going down my drain.

I just used a product called Pequa in the drain pipe that my washing machine and AC drain pipe drain into. It was clogged and overflowed every time I did a load of wash (during the rinse cycle). I used Pequa and hot water to rinse and the drain is now unclogged and working great! Drain water goes down the drain pipe easy and clear!! :)

I wanted to thank you for this video. We had a really bad drain clog, tried everything the whole evening long with no success. I had watched this video that night but didn't see the key to rid us of the nightmare. So I watched it more carefully, I planned a plan after your information and after a hard day we finally were successful. What a joy it was to be standing with a half full of water when that vortex started spinning like a tornado. Former Contractor - What I do for my own house. Once a month pour two cups of full strength bleach down each sink drain. Let stand overnight (it's laying in the plumbing trap). Fill each sink and tub (fill the tub with 2 inches of hot water) with hot water and then drain. I have never had a clogged line using this method nor any sign of corrosion. Clogged toilet? Shut off the water supply line. Fill commode with hot water and let stand for 10 minutes then flush with a bucket of hot water. This way you don't run the risk of overflow. Do this three times and use a plunger each time. If this does not work................CALL a plumber!

Serious question: How do you prevent your family from putting any acids in the drains when you’re soaking bleach? Also, any issues with fumes? Never let bleach soak that long without guarding the sink and draining it ASAP.

@@utuber2940 Hot water out of a hot water tank typically is not hotter than 120F to 140F. I have mine set at 120F to prevent people from scalded. Wax used for toilets does not melt until above 140F (160F to 180F). Pouring some hot water in the bowl from the hot water tank shouldn't hurt it and never has for me when I have done this.

Interesting video, however; thinking I should tell you about something that works well. ZEP Crystal Heat Drain Opener Industrial strength. For about a year I had a slow draining kitchen sink. Tried all the Draino products and they were basically worthless for this task and did not take care of the problem. Got the zep, and the kitchen drain was slow in the morning so I poured a bunch of the crystals down the sink and made a pot of coffee. Went to check E-mails and look at the morning weather. When on the computer I heard something funny from the other room I took to be the coffee pot doing something strange. So I went to investigate, the drain in the sink had steam rising out of it. The liquid in the sink was boiling (A violent exothermic reaction happening) I added a little water to dilute the reaction and never had a slow drain again as long as I lived in the apartment. The ingredients for this witches brew is SODIUM HYDROXIDE; caustic soda; soda lye SODIUM NITRATE; chile saltpeter; soda niter ALUMINUM; METALLIC GRANULES SODIUM CARBONATE; soda ash; carbonic acid, disodium salt. SO if none of the liquid stuff seems to work for you , get serious... Get some of the industrial strength stuff.

Ive been a professional plumber for over 32yrs, and I hate when homeowners use these. Hercules Clobber is by far, the BEST!! Pour it straight in the drain and it sizzles and smokes, cant dilute it. It's only available to us plumbing contractors in my area. It even thaws frozen drains. I know for a fact Clobber works

@@DTW-bx2vy The amount of time it would take to eat through a pipe is much higher than most people would thinks. I used to remove broken taps and drill bits from pretty exotic materials with boiling nitric acid. The fumes from that would rust steel in seconds. It would take roughly 6 hours in boiling nitric acid to eat enough away to be able to pull them out.

Hey Todd! I seem to have had the best results on bathroom clogs (mostly hair) using Crystal Dran-O. Best results were achieved when letting the water level reach or go below the clog. Add the Dran-O then about a cup of water to activate it. The reaction takes place right on the clog, removing it quickly. Another point is that a drain opener does not have to completely dissolve the clog to be effective. A drain pipe doesn’t have a bottom like a cup. The pipe’s job is not to contain, like a cup, but to flow. The tests should be performed in a pipe so that a weakened clog can flow away. The heat of the reaction can soften and partially liquify grease where it can be flushed away. As always, thank you for your service!

Great idea -- other types of bare metal may also be interesting. Heat can also make a big difference, even if it's just slightly warm. I use a low concentration but warm lye solution to remove impurities from the surface of aluminum parts prior to anodizing. On the other hand, muriatic acid works great for removing rust from steel parts. Sulfuric acid or can remove rust from steel but from my experience it will very quickly start to rust afterwards. I also had an interesting incident when I was cleaning my grill at home which had a galvanized steel heat shield -- apparently "Fume Free Easy Off" works great, but "Heavy Duty Easy Off" will completely strip the zinc coating! Various combinations of cleaning solutions, materials, concentrations, temperatures, etc. can have a variety of interesting results.

Interesting as always but I do need to point out to you that pyrex (with a lowercase "p") kitchen ware is NOT thermally strong. Pyrex (with a capital "P") is made from borosilicate glass and is thermally strong. Kitchen ware pyrex is a soda lime glass that has been tempered with a liquid potassium bath and is physically stronger than soda lime glass that has not been tempered in the same way that car or shower door glass is physically stronger than glass that has not been tempered. There is "some" thermal strength with tempered glassware but it is not to be relied upon. If you really want thermally strong glass, use laboratory glassware from such companies as Pyrex beakers (from Corning), Kimax beakers (from Kimble glassware), or Duran beakers (from Schott glassware). Keep up the great work.

​@@calculator1841 If you're relying upon soda-lime glass to be as thermally strong as Pyrex, you're in for some broken glass. Here's an example: put on some protective glasses and gloves and stick a soda bottle in a flame over the stovetop. Be sure to keep all of your kids and pets away from you. It will explode sending glass particles all over the place. If you did that with borosilicate glass, the glass would get hot, maybe sag if your stovetop had high BTUs, but that's about it. When you put hot liquids in glass, or let a thermal reaction take place, it can break in soda-lime glass.

Great video! I have a major backed up kitchen sink problem and a garbage disposal that cost me almost one thousand dollars! It's the most incredible disposal, allowing "anything" to be totally chewed up and sent through the pipes. I do not want to plug this item with it's brand name. So, watching this video will prevent me from using any product that will ruin my disposal. So my problem isn't food, paper or any other item except grease! Todd, one thing I strongly recommend adding to the next drain cleaning video is Baking Soda + Vinegar. This unclogs a majority of my drains and is almost always on hand. No expensive chemicals that can damage my plumbing (unless I really need it) Here are my instructions: - Pour hot/boiling water down the drain (this intensifies the chemical reaction). - Shovel as much baking soda as you can down there (maybe 1-3 cups). - Pour in a medium amount of vinegar very quickly (usually I'll do roughly 1/3 - 1/2 the amount of baking soda) for a fast pulse of chemical reaction. - Once it has calmed down I will continue adding vinegar more slowly until the reaction has stopped. The way I conceptualize the above approach, I make a huge reaction to break apart any big clogs. Then you ride out the rest of the chemical reaction to push it downstream. Truly I was skeptical when I first heard of this but now I think its AWESOME. No waiting 12 minutes for drano (either I'm too anxious to wait or I forget). No having to keep a bunch of specialized chemicals at home or having to go to the store... Once I figured it out I haven't had it fail yet (I'm sure it will eventually, then I'll use drano)

Considering a typical P trap only holds about a cup of liquid, and I put 1/2 of a bottle in the first minute resulting in around a 50:50 mix, followed after 5 minutes with the rest of the chemical. I have melted a hole through a plastic pipe doing this, and have one loose garbage disposal after a particularly nasty clog (my drain pipe in the wall was installed with no slope over a 5 ft length.)

It seems to me that most clogs involve grease and hair. For that, drano and liquid plumber seem best. I've used liquid plumber many times to unclog drains, and it seems to always work. the key is, once it sits a good long time, turn on the hot water and let it run for several minutes to make sure all the residual gunk drains away.

The only issue I have is the tests should have been done using exact manufacturers instruction. Some are meant to be mixed with warm water (Roebic). Most are not and become VERY diluted because of the water. It’s why they suggest to remove as much water as possible before starting. This would have been a far better competition to see which works on each different scenario.

For drains that may be clogged with hair (typical bathroom issue) my first step is to use a plastic hair remover. You can find them at hardware stores, they're cheap. They look like a long zip tie with backwards facing teeth spaced about 2" apart. You push them in as far as they'll go and then pull them out. They are very effective at removing hair clogs. They will often pick up other debris and a fair amount of soap scum. Use them first followed by one of the recommended products in this video.

You can also use the tip of a drywall/keyhole saw if you happen to have one. Just put the tip gently in the drain and twirl it around like you're picking up spaghetti, the serrated blade will grab onto hair and gunk.

You can also achieve this in sinks by removing the p-trap and cleaning it and then removing the hair that is found between the drain outlet. Doing this as part of a maintenace schedule will prevent actual blockages from becoming a problem. Cheers!

@@ProjectFarm The reason the sticks did not work in your testing is due to their function. All bacterial inoculants require a period of time for colonies to establish to great enough numbers to cause results noticeable to the human eye. The reason they usually never work at all in home situations is due to the high amount of of chemicals, both acidic and base that regularly find their way down the drain. These alter pH so much, so quickly and constantly that colonies can never establish. Basically for the application they are sold for, they are snake oil.

I’d suggest, if you do this test again, try without the water. Most drain openers are marketed as having the ability to function through the existing water in a complete stoppage, but more often than not, a slow drain is the issue. In that case, the water won’t be there to dilute or weaken the chemicals. Also, should you make an updated drain opener video (new AND improved products are introduced frequently) PLEASE include Zep Clog Attack (found it at Lowe’s). It worked for me when others wouldn’t. as long as aluminum or maybe stainless or some plastics aren't exposed over a long time it should have an effect on the oil's TBN (total base number) and how well it can absorb acidic byproducts of combustion over a long period of time. too much and it will damage the oil and other parts in the engine

I will say as someone else commented earlier, ZEP Crystal drain clear is a good option whether home or industrial level. It's an enzyme type that works well and is reasonably affordable. The advice I've always been given is while some of these products may be good for keeping a drain clear, do not to use ANY chemicals for a stopped drain. If you do and it doesn't work, a plumber will charge you MUCH more to deal with it because it's not just a stopped drain: it's a stopped drain AND a sink full of caustic chemicals. If your drain is stopped up, try a plunger. (or snake if you're handy) If that doesn't work, just call a plumber.

Because most people (except me) use liquid soap in bathroom sinks and showers, the majority of the clogs I have seen are a combination of undiluted soap, soap residue and hair. I first pull out as much hair as possible from the drain with a reusable plastic drain stick…the notched edges help. Then, I pour a pot of hot water that is heated on the range to near boiling. Usually it does not take more than a few gallons of scalding water to break down soap and hair clogs. If it is an extra tough case, I have a dryer duct lint removing wand that has a flexible spine and flexible brushes. It shove it into the drain…It removes the soap and hair, while clearing any remaining clog.

@@ProjectFarm was more of a pre video prediction. My wife sheds like a dog, so our shower drain gets clogged every six months or so. Drano has never worked for me, neither has liquid plumber. Usually there is standing water by the time I get it. I like the pre mixed lye with water the best, doesn't try to kill you when you dump it down the drain

I work at a hospital. I'm amazed of the times our Engineering Department likes to use Sulfuric acid down the drains for clogs when the old buildings we have all have rod iron or cast iron drains! I'd think that would wreck them. I have even witnessed several repairs where they have had to fix waste lines too which had holes in them. Even I saw a 2.5 inch copper line with several pin hole leaks all within just several foot section of pipe. We hired a plumber who was able to replace that section. That caused a lot of inconvience too.

On a septic system here, so I have to watch what goes into the tank. I use a Husky 1/4" drain auger for the small stuff and a 1" drain tape for the larger stuff. Haven't run into any clogs that couldn't be cleared.

The cheap way to do this is take some zip ties make off setting cuts up both sides the zip tie twist until sides are no longer flat. Place in drain and voila it pulls out all the hair 😁. You're welcome

There isn't really an overall best drill bit because how you use it and what material you're using it on dictate that. Regarding your drawer of dull bits though, a Drill Doctor is the best investment. They're fairly easy to learn to use and adjust, and will prolong the life of your drillbits tenfold

I have the stuff called Liquid Lightning... you store the bottle in a plastic bag (as the instructions say). It is virgin sulfuric acid.. i poured it on a papertowel and it burned it (turned it black) in about 30 seconds and then continued to eat it away.
