Our detergent door wouldn’t open during the cycle. I replaced the dispenser assembly and sat down to see why the old one failed. I found that the return spring end popped out of its mount at the top of the detergent well. I pried up the sliding door (next to the rinse aid door) and used small needle nose pliers to put the spring end back in the mount. I pressed the sliding door back into its tracks, and now I have a spare dispenser. This is something everyone with this issue should check. I’d suggest opening the washer door to the flat position. The spring will hang down into the detergent well. Pop the sliding door on one side and put the spring back into place (the small well behind the tab at the top of the detergent well). Wish I could post pics here.

I wish I could see the pics too! Like exactly where to push the pin back into, or rather, how the pin is supposed to be, then I think I can do it. Anyway, thanks for sharing this info! You rock and great job fixing this yourself! :)

Thank you for this! Directions were spot on! My daughter was trying to help with the dishes, and put dish liquid into the rinse agent area. We had soap suds ALL OVER THE PLACE! I thought we were going to have to call in a repair tech., or replace the dishwasher! I did manage to get the detergent dispenser off, and tried my best to get all the soap out. The best part, was how easily the dispenser snaps back in. I wish it was that easy to remove. I'm currently running a rinse only cycle. I know there will be some suds, but I'm praying not flooding the kitchen suds again. I'll keep you posted on the progress. Thank you again for a great video!!!

We have model KDTM345DSS5 which takes OEM soap dispenser model W10861000. The detergent door stopped working and I came here to figure out how to repair it myself. I found another video that showed how a spring can pop out preventing the detergent door from latching closed. I removed the detergent door from the unit to see if I could find a loose spring but there wasn't one. Next I did a flashlight inspection in the tub and low and behold I found a very tiny plastic tab with the top marked "OPEN". I decided that this might be the missing part since no spring was to be found. There was a small tab hole next to the marking that says SLIDE on the door so I fiddled with the part it until it snapped into place , then replaced the detergent door into the unit and problem solved (until it falls out again). Apparently these newer models (mine was purchased in 2018 or 2019) no longer have wire springs. This door is a design failure waiting to happen and the replacement dispensers cost upwards $138 not including labor so I guess it forces owners to buy the damn insurance.

The repair video made it pretty simple. But that guy works a lot faster than I do!

Thank you. Pictures made a world of difference. Like putting the "handle" on the gasket thru the 2 holes and under clips on each sideHaven't had it seal long enough to try..but have confidence! Spring on door is working. Good sign

Thanks for the video. Very easy for any DIY. I will write the Whirlpool part number on my owners manual since it will likely need replaced again.

Would be helpful to show the dispenser electrical connector up close. The green plastic stays with the dispenser. There is a teeny tiny green tab at its bottom that releases the white connector. I struggled with this for some time.

Like Michael Ostrowski, my gasket has come loose, too and the unit is less than a year old. Appears Kitchenaid has a design issue, or defective parts. This should not be happening on machines less than a year old and I purchased it with the hope of good quality and mitigating issues. Also had a pump already replaced.

Is it possible to put the gasket back in? Mine just popped out and I can't figure out how to get the sliding lid off to put the rubber gasket back in. It's a fairly new dishwasher too. Less then 6 months old.

Mine started sticking out about two months after we installed it. Good news though. I got the sliding tray off and reinstalled the stupid gasket. I got tired of waiting for an answer

Michael Ostrowski I just got off the phone with KitchenAid, and they are coming out to fix it since it's still under warranty... hope it's not going to be a recurring problem.

I'm having the same problem. The rubber gasket seems to have come out of place and now the tray doesn't slide properly. How did you manage to get the sliding tray off without breaking it? I'm tempted to try pulling it off, but afraid of cracking the plastic!

KDTM404KPS kitchenaid has same dispenser which says prewash on cover, so is it marked incorrectly as there is only one opening in dispenser for detergent on this model. Usually you have two, one for prewash and one for regular wash cycle. If it is mismarked then should i just add some detergent to the inside of dishwasher FOR PREWASH AND FILL DISPENSOR FOR NORMAL WASH? thanks

The old Kitchenaid did this so we got a new one this January and already same problem. Still have warranty, so should I call Kitchenaid?

Thanks for the video. Do these dispensers fail because of mineral build-up? If so how can I prevent the build-up?

Is there any way to fix the dispenser without completely replacing it?
@jenwithers58077 жыл бұрын
Turns out I had this gasket problem for months - maybe even the entire time I've had the machine! The gasket gets pinched every time I close the dispenser but I didn't much of it until I noticed it didn't open the last two cycles. I opened the lid all the way and pried it to the left until the right side came up, then did it again on the other side. I pressed the gasket back in, put the spring back, problem solved!

Hey Jen, just wanted to thank you for this post. I was looking to replace the whole dispenser too. It was just the gasket that came out of place. If it wasn't for you I would have taken the whole door apart for no reason and order a part that didn't need to be replaced. 🔧❤

hi, I have a Kitchen Aid model KUDS01ILWHO that has a broken soap dispenser. I tried following your video repair but cannot separate the outer door cover like you do in the video. It seems that this model is not made the same as you show in th video. I am unclear if i have to disconnect all the wires and there are lots...then try and pull the front cover upwards. ANy advice would help. thanks
@kensahadeo19275 жыл бұрын
FYI i have previously changed the motor so i am capable of some DiY repairs but stumped with the door. it appears that the fron cover is connected somehow to the inside door cover.

Better keep this Kitchenaid part in stock, the sliding mechanism is poorly designed, in my opinion...tiny little springs engaging tiny little holders. Really aggravates me looking at this rubbish as I've repaired hundreds of different things over the years, and this just looks destined to fail. We got 5x wash cycles out of an entire new machine.

Instructions are good, but I would recommend wearing work gloves for this. I took a decent sized chunk out of my finger while popping the old dispenser out. It's an awkward maneuver and those tabs can be very sharp.

The dispenser occasionally gets caught in the top tray when you close the door. The release button is pushed in and hard to pull back again. That part is cheaply constructed and a flawed design.

Thank you parmdhoot. Butter knife and pry on the side of soap door. Lift gently to remove soap door. Place gasket into groove aligning the gasket tab into two top prongs. put back into place and it's fixed. Seems to be a manufacturing defect. Would make a vid but i'm now 1500 miles away from dishwasher.

This soap dispenser is a piece of junk. The small button keeps falling off and gets lost in the dishwasher. And of course, they don't just sell the lid. You have to buy the whole soap dispenser, which is ridiculously overpriced. Very stupid design.
