According to professor Google: "The prune fruit comes from a different type of plant other than plums. So yes, dried plums are called prunes; but not all plums are prunes" All prunes are plums, but not all plums can be prunes. The more you know!

It comes from the Americans bastardizing French, the French introduced “prunier” or plum trees and that got bastardized into prunes, baring in mind that prunes when they would have been introduced to the americas would have been grown to solely support the brothel businesses in Europe as prunes were a big commodity within the sex trade of the period. It’s also important to note that only firm clingstone varieties of plum can be made into prunes as they do not ferment while drying.

IMO the main reason to buy freeze-dried fruit is that you can blend it into a powder and use it to flavor things without adding water for yogurt, cream cheese, whipped cream, etc. They also are nice for boozy smoothies because they wont get so runny

Yeah it's mostly where you want the flavor of fruit without the water content since the freeze-dry process removes like 98% of the water.

Yeah a lot of freeze dried fruits are good for turning into powders and adding to baking/pastry because you don't have to worry about them adding extra liquid to things and throwing off the dry/wet ratio. Also in a powder form you can sneak it into things without it being obvious and still getting the same nutrition out of them. I'm assuming a bunch of the doggo safe freeze dried items will go to them as treaties As someone who enjoys dried figs, I can definitely see it being a texture thing for folks. The sweetness is subtle though.
@Eventide2154 ай бұрын
You actually lose some nutritional value in the freeze-dry process like fiber and vitamin C, but yes you are right about the rest.

During my 2000 study abroad trip to Bourges, France, we took a field trip that included a stop at a place called, Le Gouffre. It is an enormous sinkhole that leads to an underground river-magnificent! On our way to the location, we stopped for a break near some local fruit stands. I bought fresh apricots that were the size of my fist. When I bit into the apricot, sweet, golden juices ran all the way down my arm. Apricots like that do not exist in the US, although I cannot understand why. Here, apricots are small, mealy, dry,,and very tart. It is like they are not the same fruit at all. If you ever get back to Europe, and you find yourself in the South of France in the Summer time, do yourselves a favor, and stop at the roadside fruit stands.👍🏻✌🏻🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗💋

To be fair the freeze dried fruit is MEANT to be hydrated. Raw dogging a FD banana is nuts. If you had it in your cereal it hydrates and tastes like a fresh banana. Same with the FD blueberries in like yogurt or something. If you were to try it again I think you’d change your mind. Let it soak in the milk for like a minute! Kinda like how the marshmallows in lucky charms hydrates lol
@kitchenandjorn4 ай бұрын
OHHHHHHHHH well that makes more sense
@Eventide2154 ай бұрын
I wouldn't say they're MEANT to be rehydrated, but they can be. You won't get the same taste or texture as the normal fruit still because the freeze-dry process removed most of the water content the fruit created. So like a freeze-dried banana in milk isn't going to taste just like a fresh banana. Also, some of the nutritional content has been removed from the freeze-dry process. I'd say the main use for freeze-dried fruits is for when you don't have cold storage for frozen fruits or you want the taste of fruit in something without the water content watering it down.. so like flavoring buttercream, yogurt, etc.
@mmunive214 ай бұрын

I really love their favorite things (mango, mandarins) as work snacks, and their least favorite things (orange slices, freeze dried stuff, apple chips) as stoner snacks. Watched this video because of my love of TJ's soft dried mango, and was delighted to watch until the end where i found that it was also K&J's favorite! I go to Trader Joe's only once or twice a year, so I usually buy 6+ of these at a time. They're only slightly sweetened (pretty sure that used to be their name until the rebrand) so that they're softer than regular dried mango but not so sweet it doesn't even taste like mango, just candy, like what sweetened dried mango usually tastes like. The perfect balance, since I found them in 2017.

The blueberries are also good in scones, but I don’t like them alone. I agree that freeze dried fruit is nasty. My family always thought the mandarin oranges were tasteless…just sweet.
