I experienced the exact same situation as this in Fuerte. I live in Ireland and have been kitesurfing for 20+ years. On a kitesurfing stag in Fuerte and was riding strapless. Came off the board but wasn't so worried about the it (never use a leash). Whilst bodydragging to get back to try and find it I got washing machined by a huge wave, dropped the kite in the ocean. Couldn't get it to relaunch at all in the big surf. Every time the kite got rolled in a wave it dragged me backwards under the water. Tried to release everything but for some reason the safety release didn't work. After numerous times being dragged underwater I manged to undo my waist harness . The whole kite and lines rolled through the surf. I then body surfed in the wave. I was absolutely exhausted and definitely thought my number was up that day. Glad you got sorted in the end.

The real lesson is to never kitesurf further than you can swim or have a solid rescue plan that does not depend on having enough wind to relaunch kite. Keeping calm is the other major lesson that this video demonstrates well.

Same here. I started windsurfing because I thought I wanted to try kite surfing - right when kite surfing was brand new. Took one lesson (in San Francisco Bay) and that was it - handed the kite back to the instructor in a tiny ball! But, yeah, glad this guy is ok. He certainly got the washing machine special - I’ve had that kayaking in the surf.

I can't even operate a GoPro camera let alone stay calm while taking out knots in the kite lines while treading water.
