Kiteboarding has come a long way since the early days. What was once an extreme sport is now only as intense as you’d like it to be. Weather you want to experience the freedom of sailing and exploring, you want to wakeboard without a boat. Maybe you want surf in any conditions or you want to get 40 feet of air and push the limits. Best of all it’s an all season, all terrain sport.
Basically, kiteboarding is freedom. It’s gravity, it’s your lift pass for life. All the hype aside, with the evolution of our sport a variety of kites are available. Some are meant to do it all, while others are very niche.
If you’ve followed this series for a while, you might remember me talking about how all kites fall on a spectrum from user friendly freeride to advanced freestyle and wakestyle kites. Now, for every design there are trade offs and for every comparison we dive into the different tradeoffs.
And while every kite in each category has its own characteristics and trade offs, there are certain attributes that are common in every category. We’ll be addressing those common attributes.

A good explanation for those who are coming in and haven't done their own research. This vid gets my stamp of approval for covering the subject about as well as it can be when as you have correctly phrased it, "The lines get blurry." Knowledge comes with time and experience. Get a free ride if your new, master body dragging, water starts and stops, riding down wind, transitioning and going upwind easily. If you haven't mastered these with ease, you will experience difficulties trying advance to quickly. A great day is one where you can kite all day because winds always change, odds are you have one kite limited to a certain wind speed range so when possible, kite as much as you can to make up for when you couldn't. Progress comes with time invested. The best student is the one who accepts it requires effort and practice retaining patients and the ability to laugh at ones self.

Straight out of lessons they hooked me up with a 12m 2012 slingshot RPM and a 2013 slingshot asylum. Apparently I looked like a wakeboarder to them and wanted to give up ease of use for a full wake setup. It was nothing but walks until switching to an axis Vanguard lighter wind board. I wonder how I would've developed as a rider if I was given a more user friendly setup right from the start.

For sure Eezee, The Asylum isn't an easy board to learn on. Especially if you were on a smaller size. The RPM is actually an excellent kite for learning so I doubt that had much effect. -Tucker

Actually yes. Granted, it's not something we carry so it's hard to demo RRD. It was only one light wind session so I doubt I would have any useful insight for you my friend. Cheers! -Rygo
