Ok, that was well done. Short, to the point, clear instructions and the instructions matched what you see on screen. Seriously. Well done.

Hi botchok5, learning in shore break or waves is much more difficult than in flat water. In those situations you have to worry about the timing of the waves and the timing of the kite, putting it on your feet and riding away. There is a lot more going on and no room for mistakes, or you get hit by a wave. I would suggest body dragging further out to sea, out of the impact zone or shore break before attempting to put the board on your feet.

This is the best intro to kiteboarding video I've seen. Brief and to the point. The discussion below is also helpful covering many beginner topics. Thanks!

Looks like a fun sport, think I want to try kitebuggys. I'm on the Oregon coast with miles of flat open beach and steady 15-30mph winds on most summer days. Great video!

What helps me is: keep the kite at 12 oclock..get your right foot into the strap..carefully bring the kite to 11 oclock...the pull of the kite will force your left foot against the board...wiggle your foot into the strap. If you are swinging around...fly the kite with one hand...use the hand you need to help steer yourself around to point the right way..ie slightly down wind. Kite control is important, but be patient learning:)

Not a kiter yet after several lessons in HI. So bought a trainer for NW Indiana, probably similar wind. It is gusty and inconsistent. Same goes for inland lake sailing. Sailing on Lake Michigan is much better. You gotta look for the biggest flattest (no trees or buildings) place you can find for the wind to stabilize. Same with a lake. The bigger and more open water where the wind is coming from ... the better.

The things I found most helpful learning to water start were: Keep consistent pressure on the bar. If you're yanking or sheeting in and out throughout the water start, you're changing around too many variables to succeed. Allow the nose of your board to point downwind. Start with small dives and work up to bigger ones until you get enough pull to lift yourself out the water. In light winds you may need to do multiple power strokes to get enough pull to lift yourself out. Have fun!

Hi Steve thanks again for the feedback. The sad reality is that many beginners launch their kite away from the water, while holding their board. Others dont even think about their board until they launch and then have to walk around the launching zone flying their kite. Statements like "walk towards the water and pick up your board along they way" are friendly ways of reminding the beginner not to launch with their kite towards the land, and not to hold on to their board during the launch.

Thanks for the feedback. If our video didn't help then I think you might need more time flying the trainer kite because kite control is key.

hi jwhipple2000, It all comes down to kite control. If you learn to body drag upwind before you start to use the board, by the time you try the board you will be very comfortable flying the kite. Don't worry you will figure it out in no time, it just takes practice.

A good way to get into it is to buy a trainer kite $100-150 (cheap and you can practice on your own or with a friend and always sell it after), take lessons from a certified instructor $300+ (great investment and you get to learn using the latest gear). This way you know what to look for when you are ready to buy. Add $300+ for lessons but it is money well spent. You can get a good kite used kite/board for $800+

It's really difficult to get into position here in England. I'm struggling big time because of the waves knocking me before I even get a chance to put my feet in the straps.

I learnt in small waves, I hated them but had no choice...after you get up and riding well you soon learn to deal with the waves, and you get to like them! its no big deal once you learn to ride up and over them...I dont even think about them now. worst thing is getting out deep and losing the board, hard to see when theres waves. You might need a leash.

Heed this advice. Get yourself a trainer before paying for lessons. I took 3 3 hr lessons in HI and most of the time was kite basics. I've been flying a trainer for a while at home and am looking forward to trying lessons again on next HI trip.

And that is when you Flag out or eject the kite. Most instructors will tell you this rhyme: when in doubt just flag out

I think they explained it a little better than that actually, they did not just say get in the water and dive the kite, it was much more detailed than that, they mentioned everything you actually need to know to do a boardstart. Even thought the boardstart is difficult to learn for beginners, it is actually a very simple action.

Does anybody have kiting experience up in Minnesota? I tried lessons in MN and I never got the hang of it. I could control the kites alright, but it seemed that gusts would cause me to lose control. Winds are gusty up here. Once I was flying my trainer (10-15 mph winds) and a big gust of wind came and the lines broke. I also had similar problems when I was body dragging. I would have good control of the kite but then suddenly I was thrown from the water. Any thoughts?

+RomanAtwo - Signing up for my first lesson this June. I've seen this in San Carlos Mexico for years when I worked there, and was envious of the fun that people were having. Living in Michigan, this seems like a great way to enjoy the Great Lakes. Can't wait to try!
