Look what John writes at 7:40 - I Love Elvis...and in 1986 at the first inductions to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the honor of inducting the King of Rock and Roll belonged to the sons of Elvis' biggest fan, Julian and Sean Lennon

You mean you haven't twigged that they've ruined this clip by putting a 'modern' recording over the top? Sure they were miming but why the need to lose the atmosphere of the original 🤷 New doesn't mean better - soulless.

"It Won't Be Long" was apparently deemed an "album track" or even "filler." But many Beatles songs in that category, along with "B" sides, were equal to their biggest hits.

I'm astonished that "It won't be Long" seemed to got lost in the shuffle... It's a total gem and every time I hear it my mind goes right back to being 9 years old in those magical early days of Beatlemania. That little re-occurring guitar riff George plays gives it the perfect touch.

They had a fresh new sound. An original style. They didn’t sound like anybody else. This was big factor of the appeal and popularity. Plus they were so charming, funny, hip and young. They couldn’t miss becoming the next big thing. Then they became bigger than Elvis. When Lennon said that he wanted to be bigger than Elvis, it seemed 😢😢a far fetched goal because he was a phenomenon. But they achieved it and became the GOAT because of their singing and songwriting. And they were witty and funny in interviews! Entertaining from the beginning. Amazing band

John best friend Pet Shotton said in an interview that John Lennon told his classmates that his future band would be just as popular as Elvis and they laughed at him and teased him and nearly bullied for making such a statement. The funny thing is that John proved them wrong, Not only was the Beatles just as big as Elvis but they are still popular 53 years after they called it quits.

My favorite part of this video is right at 2:00 - just as they are going to the bridge in "It won't be long" (since you left me....) - There was this glance between John and Paul - John looks over at Paul with this cheeky grin and Paul reacts almost blushingly coy, like a girl getting flirted with....It was just a very short acknowledgement between them - but you could tell how fond they were of each other and how closely they communicated.

The Musicans Union were unhappy with so many pop performers miming. Overtime Ready Steady Go was probably the only progamme by 1965 until its end where there were actual live performances. Unfortunately, many of these including Jimi Hendrix on RSG no longer exist. The last early Beatles live TV performance where they were playing their instruments, was on ABC TV's Blackpool Big Night Out in August 1965.

John is perpetually confrontational at this stage. And rightly so. He can see how silly it all is.

John's style of humor and sarcasm borders on being abrasive or even disrespectful. That, and the way he makes it so obvious that he's lip-syncing the songs, makes makes him basically the original punk, haha!

Exactly right, John Lennon was far more intelligently confrontational vs 'polite society ' in 1964 than his pale copy 'John Lydon' (Rotten) who were a joke as rebels. John Lennon would have had contempt for the pointless 'Filth and the Fury' from an original 1976 punk.@@BugRib

@@vladdrakul7851 - Hmm, I’ve never really delved into the Sex Pistols’ catalog, but I do love “Anarchy in the UK”, as well as Sid Vicious’s take on Sinatra’s “My Way”. What do you not like about the Sex Pistols? Anyway, now I’m feeling an urge to go check them out, haha.

John Lennon is not accepting things the way they are as "that's how it is". He wonders why are things the way they are, what is this doing to me, what do I think about all this? And because so much came onto them every day John could not keep up with digesting all this. So he kind of fled into those idiotic grimaces and spastic movements.

Having the Beatles lip-sync and not play their instruments is kind of an insult to them. On the Ed Sullivan show they played for real and they were fantastic

I think this show was just not set up for that. Put the band in the center and have all the kids right up next to them seems to be the format.

It often depended on how much quality of sound the TV studio could produce. If the studio did not lend itself to good sound, the recommendation was to lip synch. No one lip synched on the Ed Sullivan show because that studio provided excellent sound.

I'm an American, and I appreciate seeing "Ready, Steady, Go" for the first time!! With the awesome Beatles, miming included!! Ha! So even in these relatively early days, miming was big in Britain too, eh?

yes, easier for the bands to do when they were spending a lot of time touring already. in august 1966 the musicians union banned miming on bbc shows (i think itv/granada banned it earlier in march). this was actually a very controversial decision and was publicly criticised by groups because it was 1) taxing on them with their already busy schedules and 2) becoming increasingly more difficult as pop music was developing and becoming more complex. they quickly revised it so that only the singing had to be live. this continued until the early 80s

Boomer here. Not easy to explain the fab four phenomenon that was not simply musical but also cultural. The so called "greatest generation" (MY PARENTS) that had lived through the depression and WW2 had problems with it. Almost overnight the crew cut went out of style, and long hair became the thing. In my small town barbers went out of business. The bIg band sound of Glenn Miller and Duke Ellington that my folks liked vanished the British Invasion of rock bands began. Then came punk music. No one is left of the Beatles but Paul and Ringo.
