Kitten & Cat Diarrhea Home Remedy - Safe & Easy!

One of the most common health issue with kittens is diarrhea. There are lots of reasons that a kitten can have diarrhea or loose stools, and often a trip to the vet for a fecal test will be needed to find out the cause. While some kittens overcome diarrhea on their own, there are simple and safe remedies you can make at home to help their upset stomachs.
Kittens suffering from diarrhea can get pretty messy bottoms, so we'll start with a quick "booty bath" in warm water and a drop of baby shampoo to get things clean and comfy.
What your kittens eat matters a lot! Be sure to always feed the best quality "kitten" formula food you can afford. Pureed pumpkin has long been a remedy for cats with both diarrhea and also constipation. The soluble fiber helps absorb excess fluid from the intestine to regulate proper elimination (poops!). I also like to add a little cooked-until-mushy white rice to the food to help ease stomach upset. In the video I also discuss some supplements you can also add for diarrhea treatment, listed here:

I'm so thankful I found this video bc using pumpkin worked wonders for me. My month old kitten has been having diarrhea for weeks now. It only got worse recently bc his poop has become very watery. Not only that, but bits of poop was constantly coming out of his booty. He had no control over it. Then I found this video, bought a pumpkin instead of the canned one, boiled it, mashed it, and mixed it with rice and some chicken. He ate it all with no issue and later that day, we saw his poop was soldifying. It was still wet but it's not watery like before. Today, he just pooped it again and it was a soft solid poop. :]

I am in the same boat here without a job or funds to take my newest rescue kitty to the vet. I have pretty much tried everything so far. The pumpkin actually works! My 8-weeks 2 kittens have been producing loose stools for 3 weeks now. They are still nursing their mama and mama is A-OK. The vet prescribed them with probiotics, kaolin pectin & antibiotics (metronidazole) which I later found out they were allergic to. I had to stop their abx because they would always throw up 2 hours after I administered it. And everytime they threw up their food waste, they’d be so lethargic and refused to eat for a day or two. I had to force feed them with a syringe on days they didn’t eat. Diet wise, I have tried a lot of premium kitten food by mixing a little at a time but none works. The vet here recommended Cindy’s Recipe, Royal Canin GI & Reflex plus. Again, they didn’t work. Some they didn’t even look at! They got really picky after throwing up. The kaolin pectin worked, until it didn’t. It hardened one of my kittens poop so bad that he produced black bloody hard stool. When I took him off of it, his stool started to loosen a bit. But still isn’t normal. His bum were so swollen and bloody. The other kitten still produced loose yellow stool even on kaolin pectin. So this is what I did and what worked for them: -I boiled some chicken breasts + mackerel (bones removed) and chop them into tiny pieces. -Also, instead of canned pumpkin, I just bought a pumpkin, steamed it then mashed it with a fork, mix it with probiotics for cats (I used Guardizen). Mix the mashed pumpkin with boiled chicken/mackerel. -Add a tiny bit of white rice and water to dilute the mix. I’d say the ratio of protein to pumpkin to rice to water is about 50:40:5:5. My kittens prefer the mackerel than chicken though. If their meal is just chicken and pumpkin, they would eat it, but only a bit. It took about a week for the pumpkin to work. It’s been tough, 4 weeks battling with their constant loose stools and bloody, swollen anus but its worth it. For their bum, I applied Vaseline since it’s pet safe and it soothed their bum a lot when they had bloody diarrhoea and constipation. Seeing them both eat with great appetite now makes me so happy. When they both first produced normal solid poop (about a week ago) I cried lol. Never thought I would cry over poop but here we are. Thanks so much for this recipe!

Dirty booty bath; I love that! I always use pure organic pumpkin in my kitty's food too and she is nine years old and it's great fiber. I also add some hot water in her refrigerated food (wet + raw foods) to make a stew. That way I know it's not too cold, she gets her fluids, and it slows down her eating. I use lysine and elderberry to keep down colds etc. I also use that Jackson Galaxy's probiotics & enzymes for tummy problems and diarrhea. Bella loves her food. I remember when she was a wobbly kitten protecting her two brothers while they slept. Legs wobbling and mouth open wide hissing for all she was worth, but, no sound was heard. She was all of four maybe four and a half weeks. What a spitfire.

Hi Jennifer! We mix warm water with our cat's canned food too. One of our cats, Sing Sing, is prone to urinary infections so the extra fluid helps prevent them too. I found 5 month old Scottish folded ears kitten near my resident one week ago.He was in a very bad condition and skinny only 900 grams ! I took him to the vet and he gave him some medications for dehydration and a medicine for his immune system and liver . Now he is having diarrhea watery poops . I'm treating him for the severe fungus infection he has with diluted apple vinegar l and have isolated him from the other cats I have at home . I read in the comments that kitten milk formula might cause diarrhea to the kitten as they start to eat solid food . I'll stop giving him the milk . I gave him some yoghurt dissolved in little water . He is eating but with watery yellow stool and swollen boot . I will try the recipe of pumpkin , rice and little of soft kitten food / chicken breast and see the result . Thank u .

Thank you so much! Your videos have been so helpful to us and have walked us through this time with our two feral kittens smoothly. Our youngest kitten had a horrible case of diarrhea and her butt became very raw and chapped. After giving her booty baths I would apply vaseline to her tender skin and that helped her heal up quickly, it is also nontoxic to cats which gave me a sense of calm because I didn't have to worry about her licking it. I recommend vaseline instead of Destin because Destin can be toxic to cats and they can be sneaky about getting cat baths in. Thank you so much 😊 My kitten NOAH is 11 weeks old. I got him Three weeks ago. After being traumatized leaving his cat family, he has adjusted to his New home, He had a very Healthy appetite. I didn’t notice he was infested with Fleas. I Bathed him the day I got him. Next day here are the Fleas. My wife and I just got our little grey boy. An incredibly hyper 14 week old tabby named Andy in which has had diarrhea almost the entire time we have had him! He came from a vet that he was dropped off at and he was 100% gone over fixed the whole 9 yards before we got him at 9 weeks old. We spoil every baby we have ever had! We bought him what we thought was "the best" kitty food we could find. Blue Buffalo. We feed him that till just last week with soup poop the whole time!! Poor thing. Soo we finally changed to Sience diet 6 days ago and he seemed to respond better to that. His stools were getting better and again this morning the diarrhea is back! We did try the rice 2 weeks ago with no luck. I guess we will be trying your recipe today. Hopefully it will work!! He's been so extra wild and probably because he's not feeling well. We love him but it's been an absolute nightmare when he steps back into it then goes flying through the house!!! He also loves doing somersaults into his used litter box!!! It's unbelievable!!! 😆 it will get better but Idk?

He's been on Science Diet kibble and plan baked Chicken since his mishaps as a kitten. I wish I could post a picture of him now. On my channel I've got a old video of him watching t.v! I gave my 13 week old kitten 1 1/2 tsp of organ pure pumpkin puree mixed with hot water so it became like a broth and a little brown rice and some of her usual kitten food and within one sitting of that I watched her poop like a hawk lol and she had a solid poop! That is very interesting! I wonder though if he would have eventually got diarrhea from the Enfamil but it just didn't happen within the two days before you switched to KMR. Whenever a kitten switches from mom's milk to an alternative, there's usually some gastrointestinal distress as they adjust to the new formula. I have kittens now who are all having diarrhea and i am pretty sure it's because they went from Mom's milk (they were brought into the shelter without a mom) right to KMR. We are working through it now to make sure they don't get dehydrated , but they should start to adjust in a week or so and hopefully start making some nice firm poops!

Oh! I'll have to get some pumkpin for my Punky (she got the name Punky as an affectionate diminutive of Princess Pumpkin Daughter of Bloggie Queen of the Jungle and Meanest Cat in Guam.... I used to say that whole thing when people would ask her name. Bloggie was one of my favorite ferals of all times. I still have her brother, Old Foxxy, a tawny blue eyed tabby and Bloggie was clearly half Siamese, but Punky is a little Ginger Thing. Her father was probably Vanger the Terrible, a strong svelte Tom that was then dominating the scene, but how soon the Toms burn out. an unneutered Tom will usually die within 5 years, from fighting and burnout and, well, you know, if they are chasing a female for a week, they don't eat that whole time. Typically a strong Tom will have just one glorious year, and then downhill from there. But Punky does have great lines that I see probably came from Vanger (and his dignified pride and bearing), but she has always been small... Bloggie had a rough pregnancy and then the 8 weeks she kept the kittens out in the jungle before trotting them out to get weaned at the Feeding Station, Punky was almost the smallest runt... until that smaller runt (a shy funny thing that wouldn't let me pick her up) ... disappeared. Punky never got past being just a big kitten. Oh, but she has big adult eyes in that small body. She looks like anime from Japan. ). But, yeah, Punky has had diarrhea for years, but if you take a cat in in for open ended testing then you can hear the Vet let out an audible sigh of relief because he know he'll be able to make all his payments that month. But, yeah, I'll check the store shelves for pumpkin. Oh, she is also gassy. Never had a gassy cat in my life, but Punky can be explosive.

Oh my lord, your cat names are AMAZING Scott! You should write children's book about them. Poor Punky! It sounds like she might have an irritable bowel syndrome, which can be very difficult to treat. There are certain cat foods formulated for cats with this problem but I am sure your vet as told you all about them. I say try the pumpkin, it won't hurt. And most cats gobble it right up if it is mixed with a tasty canned cat food. Let me know if it helps!

​@@KittenSchool Yeah, just like your 3 part Blog about Sing Sing Going Missing should be somehow screenplayed for a movie, I think my story with Bloggie Queen of the Jungle and Meanest Cat in Guam would be a wonderful movie, comedy and tragedy mixed. I first saw her with her even meaner sister Woggy (the names came from their being only partially Siamese, where Woggy was mostly "white" with Siamese incursions, and Bloggie was mostly Siamese with "blotchy" incursions). the first funny thing I remember, was that we met on a narrow balcony walkway, and it was an impasse. I thought that if I looked up and away, the two sneaky suspicious sisters would take the opportunity to skirt by me, and so I telegraphed the idea to them by just nodding my head and eyes upward, but when I checked to see if they understood what I was thinking, they had read my mind and already acted instantaneously and were already behind me. That was the first laugh I got out of them. Woggie was pregnant and I was beginning to wonder about her litter... but I never saw her again. Something didn't go well. But then Bloggie joined the Feral Cat Feeding Station #1 and showed that she had only been layed back in meaness because her sister was willing to step forward and do all the heavy work. But now Bloggie, not a year old, was terrorizing the Station. She was MEAN. To show solidarity with my Ferals I would take their side and yell at Bloggie and throw things... but I was worried she'd kick my butt too. She was MEAN. But she was steady, and once she had her place.... at the top.... she let everybody else eat. Life goes on.... but she was still mean. Then one day, she starts hanging around with me. "What do you want, you dirty thing?" But, okay, I got a new unlikely friend. Then maybe a week went by and I saw her coming towards me from across the way. There was a trench were workers were laying cabling, and Bloggie stumbled and almost fell into the hole and so I laughed derisively, but THEN I thought, "whoa, wait!. When have you ever seen a cat stumble before?" ... "Bloggie are you okay?" She actually let me get close enough to look her over. She was thin and drooling, and then I rememebered that she hadn't really looked good in days. I sat down with her and told her and sang her a few songs I made up for cats and then told her "Damn, Bloggie, you need to go to the doctor, but you'd rip my head off"..... then I thought "well, if she is so weak that she is stumbling, then what am I worried about. she might be mean but their ain't no power in her punch the way she is now." So I told her, Wait here, and went and got a carrier and a blanket and she let me catch her and I got to the Vet before closing. The Vet was a huge towering Bull Dike who had been discounting my CNR program, and she would laugh when her Vet Techs complained about my ferals scratching them up (my second laugh). I explained what I knew and she reached in the Carrier and pulled Bloggie out and forced her mouth open and pulled this bone fragment out that had been caught in her teeth. "Maybe this was a problem". God, I need to go to medical school. But, Bloggie hadn't been able to eat or drink in days, and so she had to stay for intravenous hydration and feeding. I told the Doctor "that's okay, and when she is up to it, fix her too". Oh, before she closed, I got a call from the Doctor, "Bloggie won't eat. I don't know what that's about". So I turned around and headed back. In the back of Bloggie's cage was a "BOWL" of food. Bloggie couldn't see it or smell it and that was the first bowl she ever saw in her life (my Feral Cat Feeding Station used piles of food). "Look Doc", and I dumped the bowl out in the cage and Bloggie started wolfing down the food. the Doc said "I need to go back to Medical School for an extension course". Anyway, this is where Punky comes into the picture. The next morning, a Saturday, I was going out to look at the morning and there was this, well, must have only been a 3 week old ginger looking up and yelling at me "What did you do with Mommy. You bring back my Mommy!" . Oh, damn, I am such a man. I didn't notice that Bloggie was even pregnant (and with her sibling sister pregnant, well, duh, I should have thought something. I jumped in the car and got to the Vet and told the doctor what I had discovered. "Fix her and let me take her back to the kittens". "But that could kill her". "Sometimes you need to roll the dice, and Bloggie is a strong girl, and those kittens need their mother. So by the afternoon Bloggie was back. About a month later she marched her brood out of the Jungle so that I could wean them. (It was always a special moment when my Feral Mommas would lead their weaning parade to the station (anything cuter?). None of the other cats ever interfered). And there was Punky. Most of her siblings were larger. The only smaller one was funny and shy. I had a special bond with Punky and wondered whether she would make it... she was so little. but the moment I thought that as I was standing by watching them, well, Bloggie jumps up high into the air and knocks down a butterfly and brings it to the ground. "Whoa! I don't have to worry about her". Oh, Punky wasn't her name then... she was already "Princess". Oh, that was the last time I saw them all. A storm came. The next day only bloggie and Punky came out of the brush. I suppose that her Jungle Lair was not water tight and as they huddled to keep warm, well, I suppose Punky being small didn't matter if she had wiggled in the closest. In a way it subtly traumatized me. It seems that I was always giving Punky new names. A friend of mine who is a psychologist said maybe I was making Punky take the places of all of her siblings... you know, using all the names for one cat..." But Bloggie felt the loss too and even after Punky was old enough for the mother to kick her out of the nest, they went from Mother Daughter to Best Friends... like she had been with Woggy her sister. Now, this is where Princess Punky began to act like a Princess. At the Feral Feeding Stations, while Punky proved she could take and defend her own pile of food, well, one day she stopped 20 feet away and just looked at me "you can put my pile down here". "No! What the hell makes you so special?" But I guess she figured out that she had leverage over me. That I loved her. Well, what could I do? But, then Bloggie and Punky became my Door Cats. and I arranged for their own Feeding Station. there was this concrete ledge up over a 4 or 5 foot steel railing. With Punky I would do a circus 'allez hop' (english 'allay oop' ) and she would jump and I would give her a helping toss up as she went through the air (I used to be a street juggler) and she would bound off the rail herself and get up on the concrete ledge that no boonie dog could ever reach. But Bloggie was still SO feral! She didn't want me to touch her, but the rail was just out of her jump zone, but I would be saying "come on, Bloggie, nobodies looking" and she would circle around frettfully but eventually crotch and jump, and i'd get in just a little allez hop so she could make it. Well, then the story draws to a close. The kids with the pellet guns happened. Punky would come inside and Bloggie took her chances. I miss that cat.

Same here, can't afford 750 dollars just to walk in at vet whom is 50 miles . We live in a tiny town of 600 people. Very rural remote area and our 3 month old tabby kitten is puking foam , has diarrhea, he drinks water but won't eat hardly and seems to have lost his spirit . Like he sleeps way more and doesn't wake up when you move him or pet him only half opens his eyes falls back asleep . Fee days ago one of the kids here hit him with the door running playing tag ..accidental and it knocked the kitten back off its feet where he tumbled and ran off . Later he seemed fine but gradually over past two days pukin foam and very foul smelling diarrhea, heavy sleeping , hardly eating , but when me or my wife pet him he purrs and he sleeps in funny kitten positions like always. Do you think he has internal damage?? He also seems to watch and follow with his head somthing above him but nothing there?? We thought maybe he needed his mom and siblings across the way but strangely he just ignored them like they didn't exist and would not let mom cat near him at all. No signs of any pain at all so any ideas ? Thanks sorry we are in a bind here. This is all over 2 days time. His siblings have pink eye I think but he doesn't show any symtoms ..eyes are clear. Our cat had serious diarrhoea as a baby. He was rescued and we found him like that. Vet diagnosed coccydia infection. Nothing worked until they gave him a tiny dose of sheep's medicine for the same thing! Stool samples need to be tested regularly as well, and you don't want other cats to become infested, so best to keep the kitten quarantined.

Hi.. There are many pet foods that are formulated for sensitive stomachs, at lots of different price points. I have never had a resident cat with this issue, but sometimes when I am caring for sick cats and kittens they get intestinal irritation so I use Science Diet, Royal Canin, or Blue Buffalo foods. Then I may mix in a bit of mashed pumpkin or a little cooked white rice, which is very mild on the tummy. Also helpful are probiotics, such as Benebac, which is sprinkled onto the cat's food. I firmly believe that a high-quality probiotic can help balance the gut flora and make digestion easier for your cat. Hope this helps, and good luck!

Listen kittens after weaning and start eating other foods will get diarrhea but that will pass as soon as they get used to what they are eating. Once they start eating cat food they should not drink momma's milk that will cause diarrhea too.

Can we use pumpkin powder? I got the raw paws pumpkin powder on Amazon but I am just wondering if it would work for kittens as well. I saw the reviews and it seems so. I just don't know if it does so as well as pumpkin puree. Also are we supposed to do this (rice, wet food, pumpkin, fortiflora) every meal that we give (usually 3-4 times a day for me) until the diarrhea stops?

Hi there, I don't know about pumpkin powder, but as long as it has the fiber in it (and no other ingredients that might be harmful to cats) it should do the same thing. If you can try to get regular 100% canned pumpkin since it also has water in it, which helps aid digestion.

I switched my Persian cats food which has never been a problem before but because he was on his old food too long I think that’s why he has diarrhea now. Sadly I can’t get the old food anymore so I’m wondering how to transition him slowly now because he’ll also vomit up any old food if it’s mixed with new food haha so cant just do that anyway. Maybe I’ll try the pumpkin, rice, chicken patte mix and dust up his kibble until he gets a bit more used to it. Thanks for the video! I just adopted an 8 week old kitten and he has had diarrhea since I adopted him a few days ago. The shelter also said he was struggling with it too so I'm not sure how long he's been dealing with it. His booty is really raw and swollen. 😞 I have been feeding him pumpkin but it doesn't seem to help. @@noodles450 He is doing good now! He fought it off in about a week. The pumpkin actually did help. We just kept feeding him little amounts of wet food mixed with 100% pumpkin often. I also made sure he had plenty of fresh water. His bottom got really raw and swollen so I took a q-tip and put some a+d ointment on it. He didn't like that but I think it helped sooth it. I did get the fortifloura for him but it didn't seem to do a whole lot for him. His stomach was sensitive to it for some reason and he threw it up so I didn't really give him much of it. I also made sure to keep the litter box scooped to prevent any messy disasters. I also used baby wipes to keep him clean.. it can be a very messy process but they get threw it! It just takes time.

My other kitten always had runny poop as well after observing her poop it had worms so I took her to the vet and he gave me oral suspension for the watery poop and after 6 days I started deworming her once a week for four weeks and now she heathy and gaining weight. You can purchase the oral suspension by yourself at a local pharmacy it’s called O2. You can seek medical attention from the vet first.

Hi there, pumpkin could help, but it's possible that the kitten has an intestinal parasite. If you are able to get him to a vet so that they can check his stool that would be best, he might need medicine. Also there are medicines for worms and other parasites you can buy but be sure they are made for cats! If not, keep hydrating him and making sure he gets enough food and liquids and hopefully he will grow out of it. Hope this will help.
