I rescued a screaming kitten outta the yard once. He followed me, but started hissing when I went to pick him up. Soon as I did, he was like “Oh, ok, this is fine.” I then gave him a bath, and 3 years later he still likes it here.

That hiss was just a preliminary standard auto response, not really much behind it. Our kitty also hisses at toys when he gets really riled. We call him hissaboo when he does because it's like he doesn't understand what the hiss is for. This was so cute. Socialization when young as possible is super important. The mom or cat care givers attitude really makes a difference too. I love the little pause the sweet cali-girl does when she goes on your lap. The sudden "oh... this ain't half bad." and then looking at you with lovely eyes.

Yes, because it was scared. Had the same with a kitten left near our home, and it hissed and hissed until it was being pet.
