How is it funded? Fire Departments here in Wisconsin are either City, Village, or Township owned, or are independent Fire Districts which have taxing ability on the property tax rolls to levy an assessment, just as state, county, and municipal governments can, in addition to School districts.

More than likely they are funded how 98% of all other volunteer units are funded: by citizens.

Likely how it was done when I was a firefighter for a small community. We had to fundraise, one year we sold family photos to buy our first jaws of life (one set for the whole country) thanks to a volunteer who owned a studio and afterwards we would sell discount cards that local restaurants and businesses offered their services towards. That and federal / state grants along with equipment donations from big cities. Many small community fire departments function this way, if you ever see a firefighter asking for donations or selling something chances are it’s either for the burn foundation or for their local fire department.

It is amazing to me that in the US, people have to beg for funding a Fire/Rescue/EMS Department whether paid or volunteer. When you are having the worst day of your life, they come.
