It's hard to overstate just how much of a legend Vince Lombardi is, especially here in Wisconsin. There are cancer clinics all over the state, named in his memory. I doubt you could find much footage to react to, but you might want to do some research into Earl "Curly" Lambeau, the founder of the Packers. The team has a pretty unique early history that I think you would enjoy learning about.

Lombardi started coaching at a small catholic high school in New Jersey. After a few year’s coaching football the school asked him if he could also coach basketball. Lombardi had never played Basketball in his life. He got a book on basketball from the school library that was written by the coach of Southern Methodist University in 1921. He coached his first basketball team to a state championship! The Packers had a record of 1 win 10 losses and 1 tie in 1958. Lombardi told the 1959 Packers in the first team meeting; “We will relentlessly pursue perfection, knowing fully well nothing is perfect. Nevertheless, we will relentlessly pursue perfection because along the way we will catch excellence. I am not remotely interested in just being good.” He did a TV series on football called “The Art and Science of Football” My Dad coached a middle school team and I used to watch it with him. The attention to detail was amazing.

The temperature was -15 with wind chill's up to -48. That's -25 C for temp and -44 C respectively. That's dangerous weather and easy to get frostbite. A lot of the fans brought blankets so they wouldn't freeze to their seats. Only one whistle blew during the game because the ref had to rip the metal off his mouth because it froze to his lips. They used hand gestures and yelling for the rest. Now, that's sometimes stable weather for Green Bay and part of their home field advantage, same as most northern teams. It's absolutely no fun when a dome team or a team from Arizona or Florida get to come to Green Bay, Chicago, Buffalo, or Foxboro in December or, worse, January.

To put the game winning drive into focus, it was -18°F with a feels like temperature of -51°F or -28°C and -46°C respectively. The Packers had to score in the shadow end of the stadium where the ice was the most slippery. And they scored, knowing that if they didn't, then they would have lost because they had used all their timeouts and couldn't stop the clock.

“Even though it is a national tournament, the award was initially inscribed with the words "World Professional Football Championship". It was officially renamed in 1970 in memory of NFL head coach Vince Lombardi, who led the Packers to victories in the first two Super Bowl games, after his death from cancer. It was thus presented for the first time as the Vince Lombardi Trophy in Super Bowl V when the Baltimore Colts defeated the Dallas Cowboys 16-13. It has also been referred to as the "Tiffany Trophy" after the Tiffany & Co.” - wiki

Super Bowl V was also the first post-merger Super Bowl, and therefore the first one that was also an NFL Championship game. Prior to that, there were NFL and AFL championship games each year, and when those two Champs then met in Super Bowls it was kind of an afterthought interleague game. Not even well-attended.
@ElvisRose_2 жыл бұрын
@@DougRayPhillips Although, the other teams & coaches all placed a tremendous amount of pressure on Lombardi & the Packers going into that first Super Bowl. It was less of a game where you win for your team & your fans but you win for all of us in the NFL.
@DougRayPhillips2 жыл бұрын
@@ElvisRose_ That is true. Just by being created, and competing for some top college players, the AFL had driven up the salary market and had messed with TV contracts. The NFL team owners badly wanted to dominate those first interleague championship games (whatever we call them) so that the upstart AFL wouldn't gain any further legitimacy. So they were calling the Packers before SD1 and telling them "win for all of us." I even remember an editorial in TV Guide before SB2 called "What if the AFL should win?". Basically it said that the NFL was better, but we couldn't tell how much better. It said it was a given that the NFL team would win. But if that team didn't win decisively, it'd be an embarrassment. And if it lost, they'd have to leave town. Well, SB1&2 worked out as expected. But the AFL won SB3&4. Then the merger happened, and several NFL teams (some of which were originally All-America League teams) were transferred from the new NFC to the AFC so that each conference would have the same number of teams. Over the years, some other teams have switched conferences and have gone to the Super Bowl from both sides. So, there's still quite a bit of historical background for fans being loyal to either the NFC or AFC, but not as much as there might have been. Some folks even want to abolish the conference distinctions and just send the overall best 12 or 14 teams to the playoffs.

“Winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing.” Lombardi actually admitted years later he regretted saying that. He wanted his players to give everything they had for the team, but he said it hurt him to know that when they didn’t win the team felt like losers.

However, there are some coaches/teachers who can only unite their players by making themselves the object of their hatred. It is sometimes, sadly, more unifying to share a mutual hatred for something or someone.

Lombardi was the Packers GM the year after he retired from coaching. But he missed coaching so he took the head job for the Washington Redskins in 1969, his true last year as an NFL head coach. He guided them to a 7-5-2 record, their first winning season in quite a few years. He died of colon cancer in the off season at the age of 57. A great book about his final season is “Coach: A Season With Lombardi” by Tom Dowling. It’s an excellent read of the man, warts and all. Now out of print but there’s used copies for sale online.

If you truly want to learn about the man Vince Lombardi, you should spend a few minutes reading some of most famous quotes. I personally guarantee that your time will not be wasted. For example: "Winning isn't everything, but wanting to win is." "There are three things that are important to every man in this locker room. His God, his family, and the Green Bay Packers. In that order.” "Second place is meaningless. You can’t always be first, but you have to believe that you should have been - that you were never beaten - that time just ran out on you.”

This has perhaps all been covered in the comments, but... The Packers are the oldest NFL team. But the Bears (originally the Decatur Staleys) are the oldest continually-existing NFL team. The Packers had their NFL membership suspended for a year, in the 1920s, for using players who were still in college. The first years of the Packers, under player-coach Curly Lambeau, were very successful. Their very first year, they outscored their opponents 565 to 12. They won several NFL championships, including a three-in-a-row. But eventually, Lambeau "went Hollywood," and then quit. And the Packers were in for a long dry spell of mediocrity. In 1958, they went 1-12-1. Two assistant coaches for the New York Giants, Vince Lombardi (offensive coordinator) and Tom Landry (defensive coordinator), were both considered very good. Green Bay recruited Lombardi, while Landry eventually went to the expansion franchise at Dallas. Lombardi rebuilt the Packers. Mostly by just whipping the existing personnel into shape, as opposed to by drafting and recruitment. His first year, 1959, they posted a winning season. Second year, they went to the NFL championship game. But lost to the Eagles. They won NFL championships in 1961 and 1962. In 1962, they won every game except for Thanksgiving Day at Detroit. 1963 and 1964, they finished second in their division. 1965, 1966, 1967, they won NFL championships. Another three-peat. As a separate event, after the 1966 and 1967 seasons they also won the first two Super Bowls ever played. As the vid says, Lombardi was worn out. He may already have had colon cancer at the time, but he wouldn't get tested. He resigned as head coach, appointing one of his assistants as his successor, but stayed on as General Manager. That's no spot for a natural-born coach, so after a year of that he resigned completely. He became the head coach of the Washington Redskins. Started to rebuild them. But the cancer caught up with him. I don't think he made it to the regular season in his second year there. So yeah, the Lombardi Colon Clinics in Wisconsin are a "don't let this happen to you" reminder. After Lombardi left the Packers, they had another long drought of mediocrity. Until 1992 when they started to snag some good modern-era coaches, and got Brett Favre and then Aaron Rodgers at QB.

Actually, I guess I was incorrect. Looks like the Chicago/St Louis/Arizona Cardinals are the oldest NFL team. Authorities differ on some of these details.
