As an Irish supporter I have to say it was one of the most intense games I've seen in years. Every single ruck, maul, lineout, breakdown looked like it could be a game changer. And what I loved most was the discipline by both teams. Not even a hint of a yellow card, just two teams going hell for leather within the laws of the game. Epic test match.

Hi Mark, I am a Springbok supporter from Cape Town, I really enjoy your insightful, level-headed, non bias content. I think we should take the comments from John Kerwin. Jeff Wilson and Ian Foster with a pinch of salt as they are the coach and ex-All-black players. There is a strong emotional connection to the black jersey which I can understand. At the end of the day, the results will show which is the most effective style of rugby. I wish the all blacks well in the campaign but can't help thinking they will not get past the quarter-finals precisely because of their style of rugby

Great insights thank you Mark. Tight games are probably so because of excellent D, in case of the SA - Ireland game. It was tough and awesome to watch. I think the ABs have had some very easy matches which haven't stressed them and might cost them when they come up against a team which doesn't allow them to play to their strengths. That's exactly what South Africa did in the warm up game and France in the first game.

As an Irish supporter I just wanted to say how much I loved this vid and also to say we here in Ireland have nothing but the most massive respect for NZ rugby. You guys have been the standard markers for the ultimate way to play the game and we have learned so much from you. We now believe (without being big-headed knobs about it) that we have taken what we've learned from you and have taken it to another level in terms of accuracy, intensity, extreme drilling, awesome defence and hyper drilled attacking moves. You guys have been the gold standard in this regard in the last 10 years and we've used you to raise our game. We're far from perfect, but by jebus we're looking forward to a great game this Saturday. May the best team win lads. 🙂

Hi Mark. Spot on. I love NZ ( toured there a couple of times ) and I have never met an arrogant Kiwi supporter. It is a pity that commentators tend to “ stir the pot “. The same applies to the Ozzies. The supporters are great but their commentators suck. The result is that many South Africans perceive the Ozzies to be arrogant - not so ! Keep up the good work and may the best team win ! Greetings from a Springbok supporter.

Nobody wants to watch one side score a dozen tries with no opposition. Doesn’t matter who is racking up the score. It’s boring. Folks really need to get a grip and stop taking comments out of context. It seems that people get upset when someone makes a comment that doesn't match their own narrative. He's a coach who is playing high stakes and against formidable opposition. Us couch potatoes need to sit back and enjoy. Nobody is perfect and no matter who makes a comment in interviews there are keyboard warriors ready to criticise them and pull them down. Ian Foster is doing the best he can. I believe that and the best team will win on the day and onlythat day. There will be ups and downs. Good luck to all of these wonderful rugby teams. Hi Mark, I like a movie that has a bit of everything (drama, thriller, action, romance etc) so I like watching a rugby game that has everything to be honest. And I think, France, Ireland and South Africa are developing there rugby to have a bit of everything, while the All Blacks likes just the action style of rugby according to Ian Foster's style of rugby. The problem with Fozzy's philosophy and current the All Blacks is that they don't know how to play what is front of them which is like the Crusader's philosophy. France and Ireland are doing that very well now.

Also, France and NZ have been having fun and scoring tries in their sleep...and now suddenly you are in arm-wrestles against the two best defenses on the planet!!! I really enjoy your insightful opinions and analysis, I'm a Bok supporter, and really enjoy your sober and unbiased takes, I personally think Fossie is basically saying I'm leaving and can't handle the fact that Razor is replacing him so no more politically correctness from him like barring Razor from the ABS games or camp if what is being reported is correct, as for the 3 stooges Jeff, Ian and Mils, they just can't get to grips with the ABS not being the dominant force we all have come to expect, the All Blacks don't have the forward depth of yesteryear, also Ireland and the Boks set the Std now with France a close second or third so that leaves only 4th for them to occupy and their arrogance won't and can't let that sink in, long may it continue, long may it continue, it will as many a Star will be either calling it quits after the World Cup or opting for that last bug payday out in Japan, not to mention going staying in France in the Top 14, so further depleting their already thread bare stocks, that's my 2 cents, love your vids regards Neil Lee Fon (Kimberley, South Africa)

Doesn't need to be a tournament of only 2nd tier, but i agree. These other country's must have televised games that the whole world can watch at least having a tour of sorts once per year. Example Fiji doing a tour playing games against a few country's, maybe Argentina, Japan, Romania and Italy. Then another team roughly same period doing their own tour like Portugal going around playing a few different country's like Australia, Georgia, Uruguay, Tonga and maybe South Africa. - This way they get to play a few other teams that they would also face when they get to a World cup and mix of 2nd and 1st Tier. Would also be nice to see England, South Africa, Ireland and New Zealand doing tours playing against Georgia, Samoa, Romania, Italy and Chili more often. Televising it... making it a game to watch. This way it's entertainment for people to go watch in Stadiums and live broadcast.

Hello, there’s no way you can say that Ireland v SA game was dull, as a Kiwi I was still glued to that screen. I guess the point IF, JK and JW are making is similar to the questions of the late 80s where viewing figures were dropping and people were losing interest. While the quality of the IRE/SA was extremely high, is the less open style of rugby as interesting when played with less skill and lower stakes? I don’t know the answer, but with English clubs going bust, and more than one union in financial trouble, we have to ask what will grow the game? Personally, I want to see both styles and teams that can transition between, it’s the variety that separates union from league.

I'm not a Kiwi and I think it was a bit of a dull match, but not boring as such. It was a bit predictable, but that was obviously going to be the case considering that they are a couple of the best teams in the world. There have been great matches throughout the contest, even with the less experienced sides. A great world cup all round.

As a Kiwi living in the UK (reasons) I can say that the way rugby is viewed is different here. The DNA you spoke of makes a great difference to what is perceived as 'good' and I often have a quiet laugh at the various ways that rugby games are described by the pundits from different countries, including NZ. The other point I would agree with is that the pundits and coaches are definitely playing games based on the job they are paid to do. It's easy to spot in every country when you compare them. Still I am disappointed with the lack of integrity that this brings and would hope the likes JK and Goldie would wind back the rhetoric for the benefit of all. Remember a 'fair go' isn't just for those that pay you.

So interesting to see who wins the Rugby World Cup this year. I think Ireland have a strong chance to beat the ABs. Their pressure game is amazing. The South Africa v Ireland Game was so impressive from both teams. Pressure cooker rugby where other sides would have melted. Including sadly, the ABs if I'm thinking of their warm-up match against the Boks and Game 1 v Le Bleus. As a die/try hard AB fan, the only thing I'm grateful for is Jordie Barrett returning to midfield where he has been great in combo with Ioane. And Shannon Frizell back at 6 offers grunt and brute game the ABs need. Swap between Frizell and Scott Barrett at the 6 for lineout, grunt options. Would love to see Ardie continue as captain with Cane on the bench or perhaps out of the 23. Front row stocks are low with tighthead Lomax recovering from the 30 stitches in his leg wound and De Groot silly boy antics with tackle technique. Poor front row, you go home. .. ah well. Bring on Razor for 24.

@@markphilpottinsidesport Thank you. I am not a rugby expert - just a hack like many of us. I worked as a sports reporter for a little while in NZ in the mid 2000's. In the Bay of Plenty - Highlights were covering games when the Bay of Plenty won the Ranfurly Shield in 2004 and the NZ Maori beat the Lions at Rotorua in 2005. Some good memories of grassroots and NPC rugby!!

Thanks so much for this Mark - made me feel a lot better after hearing their comments initially. I don't have a problem with Fozzy - he's the coach and Rassie equally plays mind games, i do however Jeff and the Sir's comments are short-sighted and unnecessary . The real question should be if your preference is open rugby, you should rather ask yourself why you can't play that against an Ireland or SA? I'm a big Kiwi Supporter, and know that Jeff and Sir are not a general teflection of NZ rugby opinions

From AB supporter Ireland are a great team playing great rugby for a few years now. The top 23 are in sync like clockwork but that has come at the expense of exposure of other players. Reminds me of the great Australian teams with Eales, Larkham and Gregan luckily they never got injured in games that mattered.

All us rugby fundis can under stand the friendly banter, but when beating a non rugby nation goes to ones head is a bit stupid. Injuries at the top level is a concern and must be avoided. My personal opinion as from now Ireland, Springboks, France, All Blacks all have an equal chance of taking the cup, But there is always the chance of an upset which spices things up abit.

The main thing that frustrates me in World Cup years is trying to adjust rules months out from the big event. The southern hemmisphere rugby agreed to run new rules to try and speed up and increase ball in play time. Shot clock on kicks, shot clock on rucks and line outs, the DELIBERATE foul play Red card, the 20 minute upgraded red card, the bunker reviews. The Bunker system has been introduced poorly in the World Cup so far imho. The bunker is essentially reff'ing the game rather than "investigate serious, clear and obvious incidents of dangerous play"(the actual wording used), causing more delays. A lot of these things did noticeably speed up and cause more "time in play" rugby. However I think World rugby should have pushed these initiatives next year, rather than a few months out from a world cup, then only use the shot clock on goal kicking, and poorly institute the bunker system, which in my mind has been woeful. I really think these guys are just frustrated with World Rugby. Also, they have opinions, they are allowed to like a certain type of style. Just like everyone else. If you don't agree, that's fine, no one says you need to. End of the day their opinions don't mean squat to World Rugby, passionate or not. Personally, for me the Ireland/Bok game was a classic TEST match. You couldn't have asked for a better example of 2 teams at the peak of their powers. Good luck to all the quarter finalists, may the best teams win.

Foster said that the way they played against Namibia and Uruguay is the way rugby should be played? What is so exciting to see one team putting on a cricket score over another team? If you look at the quality of the match between Ireland and SA then it was really exciting. It's like seeing Mike Tyson beating up an average light weight is more exciting than Tyson vs Holyfield.

Hi Mark. New Zealand is famous for its 2 degree's of separation. I too grew up playing rugby, but realise I wasn't a team player. However I enjoyed the game and enjoyed talking with a family friend called Russell Pettirgrew. My mum is a close friend with his Wife. If you are asking yourself who is Russell Pettirgrew then what I will tell you will be meaningless. Russell was heavy involved in New Zealand Rugby. I was lucky enough to talk to him at his home in Napier many time about is favourite subject. He was on the board of the NZRU. What Foster and the other ex All Blacks are talking about games being too slow and not spectator friendly. It is a NZRU talking point. It is something expressed over many years by the NZRU as a concern raised regarding the future of the game. Rugby has declined around the world in popularity and not just in New Zealand many years ago. Russell told me that the view of the NZRU was that the game needed to change if it was to expand. His explanation was that the 15 aside game was in danger of being passed in popularity by the 7s format of the game or even touch rugby. It was Russell's board who went to the IRB and said if the game of 15s was to survive in the professional area then it needs to change. That lead to rule changes to transform the game into what we currently have. The discussion is the product known as Rugby and selling it to the next generation. Sir Graham Henry spoke about it in 2007 but it was talked about before he came out and said it. The problem is 7s survives because spectacles love tries. If you want to pay your players you need to sell tickets. Diehard fans like yourself care about who wins, but if you are going to pay the bills in the modern professional format you need to sell tickets and that means attracting more than just the diehards. Foster and all the ABs would have been told this by ever NZRU board and staff member since the 1990s at least. I heard this from Russell many years ago. With the 15s game in decline again the discussion has to be raised again. It's not just their own point of view. I don't see they are being arrogant. If we go back to low scoring games or uneven games won by who could slow the game the best or could draw the foul the best and had the best kicker then it will struggle to attract viewers just like test cricket does in every other country apart from England and Australia. The 1day cricket or 20/20 format has more revenue generated for cricket than test cricket does and Jeff Wilson would be well aware of this more than anyone else on that panel having played both codes professionally for his country. It's about $$$$.

First, Thank You Mark for your informative and very insightful videos on the All Blacks previews and reviews of the RWC pool matches. I'm a die-hard All Blacks fan since the '70's. I grew up playing rugby, in the backline through high school, in Sri Lanka and currently reside in California. I found this episode of your video, apologizing to a South African, a rather weak one, though I understand, you wanted to express your personal position regarding Ian Foster's recent comments. I too, would agree with you about the Irish v South Africa match. It was a nail-biting encounter, but it's not the type of rugby I would watch every weekend! One reason there are so many All Blacks fans throughout the world, is related to the type of rugby that is in the DNA (of all New Zealanders) and the All Blacks , the fast, open, attacking and free flowing style, where all fifteen players are engaged in the match, moving the ball across the pitch. I can understand why some fans would take offense to Foster's comments. The irony of this though, is that it comes from a South African. Rassie Erasmus, who is in charge of the Boks, be it from the background, is such an outspoken and controversial character. He has a loose tongue and is second only to crazy Eddie Jones! One of the major points that Coach Foster, Sir John and Jeff Wilson made was that during the Irish v South African match there was only 27 or 29 minutes of ball in play for the whole 80 minutes of rugby. Rather disappointing, wouldn't you agree? In the future, Rugby will lose a great deal of support it has from its world wide audience, if the game moves to the grinding, slow paced forward oriented style. Some referees are wasting further time trying to even coach 'second tier' teams on how to scrum down! This might all be related to what the media has labeled 'unconscious bias.' Lastly, who doesn't enjoy watching a beautifully constructed try? I understand that Namibia, Italy and Uruguay were weak opponents against the All Blacks, but watching the boys, keeping to the script, reacting to what was presented to them, playing 'go forward' footy, produced some exceptional rugby, many highlight reel moves of pure 'poetry in motion' moments! GO ALL BLACKS, bring home the Webb Ellis Cup to the land of the long white cloud!! Cheers.

Hi Mark, Excellent video. Irish man here. I wouldn't worry about Ian Foster's comments. It's just mind games. good analysis Mark and enjoy your views. I tend to agree with you however I think Foster has said what needed to be said. One of the problems rugby has is it is now entertainment and as such is up against other sports in high demand so the product needs to be attractive to fans & sponsors. Look what T20 has done to the cricket product. The other problem is the over officiating which turns off many people, not sure how this grey area can be improved. Anyway enjoyed the post and keep up the good work. Go the AB’s 💪

"it needed to be said!" By whom, for whose benefit? All he proved was his ignorance and state of deep denial! Only Kiwis and the few hundred Aussies still watching union think "their style of rugby" is superior to real Rugby! That's why The Wallys are on the way home already, and the AB"s team manager has already booked the team buses to take them to the airport, after they get humped in the QF's.........This I know, because I'm staying in the same hotel, and the hotel management are offering cheap deals after the QF final whistle.........So your team's players and management don't share your "optimism/belief"
