Selby was my Area Bishop when I began ministry as a Curate in South West London. His letter epitomises EVERYTHING that is wrong about the C of E and why it has fallen into the state it has. The system would have continued to operate on the principle of damage limitation. The bishops, before being appointed, are told that the principle of 'collegiality', not 'truth' must reign: so closing ranks and presenting a united front when the House of Bishops is attacked- for whatever reason - and not spilling the beans is uppermost always in their mind set. It was he and others who engineered the elevation of 'Liberals' and morally weak people who would be 'company' men and women and keep mum when required. Few baulked at this for the sake of their careers: the recent film 'Conclave' portrays much that is similar in the C of E. It is exceedingly hard to find any sympathy for men and women whose cowardice and cover-ups have brought the C of E to its present pastoral, strategic, and moral nadir. The C of E needs a root and branch revision of the system an dit would be best led by faithful and suitably experienced lay people....plus the handful of bishops with a backbone.

Do you ever wonder why your god doesn't do anything to stop children being abused by his employees?
@davidrudd22154 күн бұрын
@@davepugh2519 "You will know them by their fruits." They're not God's employees. Perhaps behind your question is the enormous issue of why God allows any suffering and evil at all - and as you know, volumes have been written to try to answer this. All I'd say for now is that a scenario in which God might intervene to prevent any and all suffering would be a completely different reality from the one we know - one in which humans could not be autonamous moral beings.

@@davepugh2519 Someone deleted my original reply to you. Why? I pointed out that anyone who is abusing children is not acting as an employee of God, i.e. doing God's will. I was surprised by former MP and Minister of State for Prisons, Anne Widdicombe's defence of Justin Welby in her discussion with Gavin Ashenden. After all, she made a big thing of leaving the Church of England and crossing the Tiber when women bishops were permitted so one might have expected her to be just a little critical of the higher echelons of the C of E. Then it hit me, she's merely defending a member of her political class.

Given how Welby encouraged the erasure of the name of the saintly Bishop of Chichester, George Bell, from that city's Primary Schools and other public places, there is something sinfully delicious in watching the Church of England try to erase his own record. And what is that record? Even today, he is remembered for one thing only: being the only Archbishop of Canterbury who locked the parishioners of England out oif their parish churches to conform with the wishes of a tyrannical Prime Minister. He has achieved nothing else! The C of E will NEVER recover from that single treacherous, faithless, act. With regard to filling the 'sede vacante' of Augustine, don't forget, the ABC has to be an Establishment figure, first and foremost: s/he must never be a 'boat-rocker' like Jesus of Nazareth. So, the Holy Spirit does not get a look-in during the current negotiations. Perhaps - if the Holy Spirit were involved - the Selectors might look beyond the English bishops. Above all, the requirement is for a sound and thoroughgoing THEOLOGIAN, who can present belief in Jesus as 'reasoned' and 'reasonable'. That was way beyond Welby! With regard to Syria, I suspect the new, very Islamic regime will serve more notice on the world, as to what Islam truly is. Your 'Borg' analogy is very apt: "Assimilate or be killed". And our politicians have been importing that mentality, among civilised people, for decades. With regard to your usual discussion of sexual practice, you continue to load the topic with 'gravitas': which has been part of the Church's problem for centuries. Such 'gravitas' starts with 'scripture', and not with 'humankind'. "Don't have sex before you're married", George? Does that include self-masturbation? What adolescent escapes adolescence without masturbating? The Church needs to start with 'us'; not its rules!

I contrasted the civilian death rate in the WWII bombing of Tokyo (Operation Meetinghouse) with the alleged civilian casualty rate in Gaza and asked why Israel alone gets the special attention and condemnation it does. The result is that I'm banned from Anglican Ink after being falsely accused by the moderator (with no right of reply) of suggesting that he was happy with the casualties inflicted during Operation Meetinghouse. I am re-wording my original reply. My apologies to anyone who gave a thumbs-up to it. It would not seem that a member of the Anglican Ordinariate would be an ideal candidate from the fact alone of Anglican appreciation for Article VI, i.e. that no one should be required to believe anything necessary to salvation which "is not read" in or may not be "proved" by Holy Scripture, which is not found in the Roman Catholic Catechism. 🤔
