I have been listening to KKJZ for decades...going back to Chuck Niles' day. Pick them up easily all around OC and sometimes heading south toward SJC and San Clemente. Love hearing David Benoit, Rhonda Hamilton, Jose Rizo and many other great voices hosting. Best radio in LA, OC and the web IMO.

Interesting...I listen to KKJZ via the web. It may be one of the best Jazz stations in the country. Thank you.

It would be great if you can visit the Mount Beacon Transmission site in New York State. It is the home of the Hudson Valley’s first FM Radio Station, WSPK (K104.7FM) as well as military and government uses. It has been there since 1947.

@8:18 -- Some 30 years ago I slapped a Sony ES car radio in a rack-mount plate at our new studios, which were well outside the reception range for our newly acquired 3kW (5kW?) FM station. It started as a joke, with me saying, "well, I can pick it up fine in my car in the parking lot...We'll just tell people they have to do their shows from their cars." The next day I'm buying the car stereo at SoundAdvice and installing it in our studio rack and slapping a cut-down (coil removed) CB antenna on the roof. That became our air monitor for years, even making it through a few major hurricanes.

Haha! Thats awesome! In the early HD Radio days we did the same thing except mounted it in a box so we could move it around. It never quite worked right but just good enough to do what we wanted.

I remember viewing Signal Hill when I was stationed at the now gone Long Beach Naval Station. Most the radio stations from then are most likely not there anymore. I truly do not recall what stations I did then listen to. But I am weird that I like to know what antenna is doing what. Peace

Wish I could receive KKJZ. I Live in the Crescenta Valley an I can not receive KKJZ. If I stand on the the roof of my house I can see the towers on Signal Hill, but I can't receive KKJZ clear enough to want to listen. maybe someday. Used to listen to KNOB back in the day when they were on Adams Blvd.

On the line of sight, did you used the dish using 500Mhz signal to send the audio?
@TheBroadcastEngineerАй бұрын
It would have been a 950 MHz link, more than likely.
@xreyengineering9073Ай бұрын
I'd have to look up the exact frequency, but it was def a 950 STL. (iHeart now has that hard-to-get frequency.) If possible, I'd be using it as a back-up link for 22 West Radio (formerly "K-Beach"), but it's impossible to see Signal Hill from the roof of their three-story USU building. Believe me, I tried. Had K-Jazz not moved from their original building on campus in 2014, the STL path would have become problematic in maybe a year as a grove of trees on the V.A. Hospital property next door were growing directly in the path, reducing reception at the transmitter site.

California has spent $42 BILLION dollars on "homeless" in the past 10 years. $42,000,000,000.00. Go find work. I've lived out of my car before. I'm now looking at buying a new airplane. Working 80+ hours a week sucks, but it can be done. Even if you're not in the best of health.
