Hi, Did you tried the SDDR saturation from Klanghelm with 3 kinds of saturation like the MJUC? I love Klanghelm plugins. Good prices and good vibes. Thx for your great channel :) .

I have to add: I just contacted Tony Frenzel at Klangheim for support; not for MUJC, but for a free plugin - IVGI. He came back within15 minutes with lots of usefu and in-depth information, which I think is fantastic support and service. I took the opportunity to say how brilliant I think the MUJC is and name checked this channel and linked this video as the reason for my purchase of MUJC

FYI, you can get a much smoother bypass by clicking the VU meter in the plugin.That click from the ProFools bypass is very disruptive and makes it harder to make a good comparison. The other really impressive thing about this plugin that doesn't get enough attention is how well the auto gain compensation works. No other compressor with that feature actually matches it so perfectly. And, yeah, the mix function is great. I use it on a lot more than compressors because it's available on every plugin in REAPER. Also, in REAPER, the audio engine is so much better that you can run that on 20 tracks easily. ProFools starts choking on a few instances. And not just this plugin. This one is actually really well designed and is puts a very light load on the CPU compared to a lot of plugins. I don't understand why anyone is still using ProFools in 2018. Are you running that on a G3? ;-)

Hi Warren, I actually have a close friend here in Memphis that does voice over work on a national level. Warren, I bought the MJUC and it is unbelievable. For a guy who works in his basement it really breathes life into my tracks particularly clean or relatively clean guitars. One thing I did notice was that my current EQ plugins that came with my DAW didn't help enhance what the MJUC was doing. I downloaded the TDR VOS SlickEQ from your Top 10 plugins video and it works great with the MJUC. Thanks! Andy

Great review and discussion! You skipped one of the most important controls though.. the one called CAL in the top right corner. That thing is "magic". Basically you tweak the expected nominal input level with that. This means that you can affect the way the saturation and the drive knob works. For instance, you can set the CAL to -6 or even zero, and then hit the drive knob all the way to 10 and still get very subtle distortion. Or vice versa, set CAL to -24 and just slightly touch the drive knob.. boom, instant "different" subtle distortion (or crank it to 10 for instant complete distortion). Also, SDRR saturation plugin suite is incredibly good. The tone and saturation you can get from it is HUGE. It's a very deep plugin suite though.. has taken me over a year to finally grok it.
@Producelikeapro9 жыл бұрын
Hi +Niklas Silen Thanks for the great tip! I believe the distortion is actually very subtle indeed, I was really impressed with how it sounded and never felt there was too much distortion, in fact I was cranking the distortion a lot! Thanks I will definitely check out the SDRR Saturation plug in! Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren

I really love Klanghelm stuff. Great plugins for ridiculous prices. I feel the same way about MJUC, that it's taking the classic design to where it is not possible in analog. I really like that. I did a shootout between MJUC mk2 and Retro 176 (mk2 is based on it) and in a blind test I even failed to recognize the hardware. That was with interstage and density engaged on the plugin. This is where the magic of this plugin is. Warren, if you like MJUC I bet you'll love his DC8C compressor. These two are the only compressors I use most of the time. And Tony has just announced that he is working on an EQ :)

Hey Warren, a quick tip with the MJUC... if you click (almost) anywhere in the metering area it acts as a bypass button. You should play more with the individual MKs especially re-tweak the attack and release since they are pretty different from one MK to the next... The drive is pretty different from one MK to the next as well...

+Christian Angelo Nilsén You should also check out Klanghelms DC8C 2, it's another amazing compressor from the same company. It's crazy versatile and sounds great. It's cleaner than MJUC so if you want to saturate the sound it doesn't really do that, but having so much control and different styles of compression it can be used on anything. I've used it to smoothen vocals, drums to pop, crush backing vocals for nice effect, final mix bus touches, anything really. And for 27 dollars / 20 euros, it's a no-brainer.

Yeah - wow (face melted)... This plugin kills it. Was just finishing a mix on an acoustic-ish song with a darker, more vintage vibe, when I decided to swap it out for the Slate Digital VBC I previously had on there. I actually did an A-B of the two. So the VBC sounded great and is usually my go-to. When we dialed in the Mark II with a little drive and a little nudge towards the hi-fi, the mix jumped out. Massive difference in the amount of depth and and clarity across everything, while giving it the glue you expect on a master buss comp. It was a solid mix before but this one really took it up a notch! Hello vibe!!! Great on my lead vocal parallel chain as well, but this time on the mark III setting. Glued, even dynamics and vibe vibe vibe! Huge score for 27 bucks! I strongly suggest the purchase before this one goes through the roof price-wise. Cheers!

Hey Warren. Great Video as always. I followed your advice (as always) and grabbed the Klanghelm MJUC........I already had the free "Junior" version........and it's all you said it would be. Just thought I'd let you know, in my humble opinion........and after some serious testing on a current track I'm working on........that the MJUC jnr actually has a slightly different tone again to the MK1/11/111 versions of it's Big Brother.........so now I've 4 Kick Ass Compressors for the price of less than one :) I had the jnr inserted on my Drum Buss, and no matter how much I tweaked the other 3, I couldn't beat what the jnr was doing for the Track..........probably "program dependent" I know.........but I thought your subscribers might like to know that the "Freebee" is also a little winner. Cheers Dave Dwyer

Nice review Warren :) I've just got the plugin and I'm loving it. I just wanted to point out one thing... the sidechain filter cutoff control just filters the low end from the sidechain (detection) circuit, so those lower frequencies don't trigger the compressor. Those frequencies still get compressed by the compressor, but the compression level drops as it's not being triggered by the low end anymore ;)
@Producelikeapro9 жыл бұрын
Hi +Chris Dececio Great to hear you bought the compressor! Yes that's exactly how the sidechain works! I use it on Bass, it's great! It let's 250hz and below through and then compresses everything above that! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren

Hi Warren, I've been using the "Jr" version of this compressor for about a month now and love it. It's become my go to compressor for lots of tracks. But I have a question about the side chain feature and it's a bit elaborate. So please bear with me. I use two DAWs. However, the one I rely on the most doesn't allow for side chain compression. the other is "Reaper" and it's confusing as all get out so it's used a lot less while I continue to figure things out on it. (love it but their method of routing throws me off all the time) What I am aiming to do is use compressors to control (squash when necessary) effects in the send bus. In other words when the vocals are going I want the reverb to be toned down, and to come back in full when the lyrics end for the purpose of dynanics. Gives it that "Real" live type of effects instead of having reverb running through the entire vocals. So the question is can I use the side chain effects of the mjuc to accomplish this? If so can you walk me through this process? I use Mixcraft 7 currently and for the most part it's a very good DAW. It has it's issues as it's a CPU HOG but when things get too squirrely I just render to wav and import to reaper. But I'd prefer to just do it in the MC and be done with it as our emphasis is on selling our original songs to artists. We are not a touring band. (Old Farts if you wish and way past that point) If responding to this is too much for your website you can always just email me directly...and of course that's if you have time. Thanks sir and have a "Bodacious" Day. (that's my answer to "Marvelous") :-D
@Producelikeapro9 жыл бұрын
Hi +Martin Weeks Thanks for the great question! Yes it's actually quite simple, put the Reverb on it's Auxillary track, send from the lead vocal to the reverb as per normal, but also send to the sidechain from the lead vocal as well. What this will do is impress the reverb while the lead vocal is playing then when the vocal stops the reverb sustain will continue afterwards. Does that make sense? Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
@MartinWeeksmw9 жыл бұрын
Thank you sir. I will let you know how things work out. Have a "Bodacious" Day!! :-)

+Produce Like A Pro Hi Warren. Just downloaded the full version of the mjuc and I thought the jr version was great. Holy shmoly!! Haven't even started going crazy with the other settings but am already totally blown away with it. Just pulled up a basic drum loop for a project I'm starting and was amazed. The compressor almost eliminates the need for a l imiter A few minor ajustments and the drum track is well within the safety limites (way under 0db's and still PHAT!! I love it. Thanks for the tip. (Actually MixbusTV has also endorsed this compressor but hey two experts agreeing is always the right choice.) Have a bodacious day. Marty

I'm still learning like the rest of us, I don't want to say I know best, go on rants etc I am purely just sharing my experience and in turn learning great tips from guys like you! For instance the last mix competition I ran the results were amazing! Certainly as good as many pros, you guys are all fantastic and if I can help in any small way then I am very fortunate! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren

I watched that review when it got online as I was looking for any MJUC review. (I own it too)...some month later I had the chance to play around with a real Gates STA and got pretty desperate because I couldn't dial in a sound I liked. I was confused about the fact that so many engineers love it so I thought it must be my fault. I hated that little compression overshoot it did when it started to knock down transients and it took waaaay to long to recover. Today I watched your review again and noticed your complaint regarding slow release times (I definitely understand you) but you also said you'd own some...how do you set them? Do you have a modified Retro version or the original Gates? I think the Retro has an interstate to avoid that overshoot behaviour. Do you know that issue or is it just me?
@Producelikeapro7 жыл бұрын
Hi Johannes, that's a great comment! You are 100% correct! There are many things at play, firstly old/vintage equipment rarely sounds perfect, components age and don't pass current as well and therefore sound worse over time! Secondly and probably most importantly modern Plug Ins are able to create much faster attack and release times, plus of course mix controls! We live in a great time!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren

Yup, only just bought it, still ridiculously cheap and great, but I've come here today to learn how to get even more from it. Let's go1

Don't worry too much about the introductory price. Klanghelm's other plugins so far have been on introductory price since they were released years ago... Never were raised and Tony from Klanghelm already said he's not even sure he'll raise the price of this one. And if so, most certainly just a couple of bucks. So great that we have all those indie developers like Klanghelm, Valhalla or Tokyo Dawn Labs/TDL that release excellent sounding (and looking) plugins for free or little money. Now we only need to learn how to use them... :)

Hey Warren! I had seen you use a Klanghelm product on some drums in one of your videos and it made for a giant drum sound... (don't remember if it was on the kit or just snare) I can't find the video and it's not in this one... any ideas? Lol I would love to see what it was and what settings you used!

Hello Warren. Great review, and since I bought the plug-in a few weeks back, I can't help but agree with everything you said. :) Did you try out their SDRR saturation plug-in ? It's pretty amazing too. I'd love to hear your opinion of it. Have a great day and thanks for all the great videos.

The freebie of this is remarkable. Therefore, considering I've been in the market for some sort of Fairchild plug-in for vocals, I'm at loss to explain why I've only JUST purchased this. The Klanghelm stuff is superb; and, for £20 (plus tuppence!), this emulation (well, THREE emulations, thus making the value for money even more ridiculous, this is a no-brainer. Another great video, mate.

I totally agree with respect to keeping costs sensible without necessarily compromising. I'm a terrible, shameless eBay bottom feeder -- I use every trick in the book. It's not that I'm miserly -- far from it -- I just want to get the most I can from my limited budget. It's really worth getting good at some of the tricks of the trade of eBay -- my most extreme score was a fully functional 02r digital console that just needed a bit of minor refurbishment that I bought for $56 + shipping. The most important trick is not to be too specific about exactly what you want and not to be in too much of a rush. Also, if you can repair equipment yourself, you can save a HUGE amount of money. I'm an EE by profession, so fixing studio gear is not really a problem.

Thanks to a rather handsome 0% interest overdraft courtesy of my student bank account I'm taking the plunge into buying some plug-ins so that in mind, it would be great if you could do some more videos, like this one, for perhaps the less expensive plug-ins for us music/audio engineering students out there! It would be great to find out from the pro's which plug-ins are both "inexpensive" yet can hold their own against the more higher end stuff from the likes of waves.. Cheers!

Yes and these plugins come even without copy protection. If you consider all these licensers, iloks, software center a, b and c, than I can only hope that people honor his efforts and buy their stuff, if they use it. I'm no saint, but those small companies tend vanish, due to lack of support.
