Warren, I love this show. I went to recording school in 2000, but ended up doing live sound monitor work, which kept me away from studio work. I didn’t get to come along for the ride as the software platforms and hardware changed over the course of 19 years. All of my time was spent on live productions on a variety of stages and circumstances. You can imagine how much has changed in that amount of time. I now have a current, but basic, Pro Tools system. These tutorials are a life saver. Your easy going communication style makes this information so accessible. The checking for clipping before sending to a bus, etc, makes a lot of sense, even if the compressor in the bus makes it 'look' like its not clipping in the fader. the sound went clipped initially. thanks for that!

At 14:00 when you talk about not putting great amount of EQ to a single plug-in... man, that concept is SO IMPORTANT, I've learned it from your videos and I think it's one of the most relevant things to keep in mind when your mixing. That way you are not forcing the input signal, but "growing" it. I consider this not only for EQ but in general especially with compressors and bussing. Honestly, just doing the volume automation made a huge difference to some mixing I did on a track with spoken work over music. The vocal was getting a bit muddy on some syllables, and just increasing the volume made all the difference.

so do you just use the distortion, morphoder and octave on the SAME vocal but on different tracks?? Wouldn't it be better to use those elements on different lead vocals?

@@rsmith9094 The distortion, morphoder and low-pitched vocals are meant to prop the lead vocal to the forefront and give it dimensionality. Whisper vocals add character to the top end. Distorted vocals for the mid range to cut through the mix and low end to give it thickness. All of this is not used as a creative effect, but more as a mixing tool to shape the "feel" of the track.

That first vocal 'breathiness' can be more attributed to emotive situation than anything else, in my opinion. It works really well and you did the right thing to keep it. That kind of song relies on emotion and this first part of the song set the standard.

The more of your vids I watch the more I think that your me but with a million times the knowledge on the topic at hand. Keeping/analysing the potential effectiveness of what some would consider a mistake or blemish is what keeps things sounding human and real. I went to art college where a third of what we did was assess and critique things. In hindsight it was the best learning experience of my academic life. I've been producing psytrance where there is no call for much in the way of vocal's, until now when I recently put a track together for as present to someone special and laid my vocal over the top, ill be honest up until seeing this video was a nightmare to get it to sit nicely,,, So id like to say a big thank you for the wealth of information that you have passed on to us as I will be using this technique from this day forward in all my vocal tracks and I do know there will be tweaks here and there depending on the style of track and vocal but your foundation from where to begin is second to none cheers Warren.

Warren, love your channel! Question - when you're first approaching the vocal, do you ever look at using clip gain and automating that before you go to volume automation? I would think that it could help since you may not have to hit the compressors so hard and you'd still have the freedom of adjusting the fader to get it to sit right without messing up what you've already done before you move on to riding the volume fader...

David Case I commented before I got too far into the track - I see not you have two vocal riders on there as well! I don't use vocal rider - does it write automation information to the track or handle it all via its own output level?

Hi David Case great question! I'm old school so I tend to use Volume Automation! Yes the Volume automation is on the main track so it hits the Lead Vocal sub evenly where most of the small increments of compression are taking place. I hope that helps? I absolutely agree about the use of volume automation before compression, I used to use Vocal Rider but after a first moment of enthusiasm I ended up abandoning it because I felt it moved too much like a compressor, keeping the signal less steady (ironically) and enhancing sibilants, don't you ever noticed something like that? Do you ever use parallel compression to achieve presence and dynamics on vocals? Great videos anyway :)

Hi +DanielSilvestriProd Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! The vocal rider is great if you set it's range to only boost quiet phrases. I will print vocals using two sets of compression very often in parallel and also mix vocals with parallel depending on the vocalist. There is no substitute for well written volume automation, that natural tendency is to try and find a plug in that does that work, but the more detail work we do ourselves the better the sound! This video is Great. i just watched it along with the Vocal thickening pitch shift trick. I'm working out of Logic. How can I use your vocal automation/ride tricks in my DAW? More specifically, how does automation differ in Logic? It appears that in ProTools you are able to layer it in levels within your chain. Also, is there a utility I already have in Logic to trim with? Thanks again.
