Mogens is the Gatekeeper. He's the link between Jesper and the outside world. I think reducing him to an occasional reminder of what Jesper is missing made him a stronger character. And he's a lot of fun to watch.

"Kill your darlings" is some of the best writing advice I ever heard. Sometimes, you fall deeply in love with an idea or scene, and it becomes hard to see that it doesn't fit or work with everything else. It's painful, but makes for a better product. I recently went through this myself, completely switching main characters for the book I'm writing, when for the past two years it's been some one else.

God! I never get tried of these behind the scenes and deleted unused early concepts of the movie. Everytime I see them its makes me love this animated film even more then I already did, please never stop with showcasing all of the things you had to cut out from the final product because there so entertaining.

I waited so long to watch this because I dont like Christmas movies but the fact that this film was so dark was great Also I hear people complain by how Jesper doesnt shut up but.....I really like that. It separates him as a character.

Indeed. this version is mostly a showcase about how nuts this town is. But the way Jesper is treated by the villagers doesn't give the message the animators wanted to show. They wanted to show that the two families who lived in the town were in a conflict for generations, at a point that they are constantly making dirtydeeds and be violent to each other. In this version, Jesper is constantly beaten and throw away by the two families each time he begins to talk to them. It gives more of an idea that the townfolks doesn't like and respect strangers, moslty the postmans. The final one where he tries to have their attentions while they are doing stuff is more accurate of the original idea the animators wanted to give.
