Hey guys! In this video I go over a TON of information on why The Lost World: Jurassic Park movie is so different from the book. All of this information can be gathered from Jody Duncan's incredible book, The Making Of The Lost World! I HIGHLY recommend you going out and buying it as soon as you possibly can if you're a fan of the Jurassic Park series! The stuff in there about what happened behind the scenes is great and its DEFINITELY something I think every fan should own! Essentially, in this video I break down the process of screenwriting, the themes of Jurassic Park 2 and go into detail about how Steven Spielberg went about on this filmmaking journey from 1997! Hope you all enjoy! :D

I want it up and running in 30 minutes. That's half an hour. - Understood? Over. - Cancel that order. What? Why? This is a game trail. Carnivores hunt on game trails. You want to set up base camp or a buffet? .....Let's find a new camp shall we?

Peter, if you want me to run your little camping trip, there are two conditions: firstly, I'm in charge, and when I'm not around, Dieter is. All you need to do is sign the paychecks and open up a bottle of scotch when we've had a good day. Second condition: my fee - you can keep it. All I want in exchange for my services is the right to hunt one of the tyrannosaurs. A male, a buck only. How and why are my business. Now if you don't like either of those two conditions, you're on your own. So go ahead, set up base camp right here, or in a swamp, or in the middle of a Rex nest for all I care. But I've been on too many safaris with rich dentists to listen to any more suicidal ideas, okay?

I love that picture of Spielberg with the baby Stegosaurus. It looks like he's actually giving directions to it. "What is my motivation supposed to be?" "I need you to gaze at the actress and give me 'cute'. Vulnerability, but with a quiet strength." "I don't know if I can, sir." "I believe in you."

@Stoopid_Sandwich
@Stoopid_Sandwich 5 жыл бұрын
B MC actually it can be argued that the T-rex scene is way worse. Not only was Eddie confronted with this primordial fear of being eaten alive, but the Tyrannosaurus really just crushed the bones in his body. Neither the buck or the doe rex had actually killed Eddie, even after ripping him in half. In fact according to medical science, the human brain can actually remain conscious for up to two minutes after the time of death, even in the most gruesome of circumstances like decapitation. So there is at least the outside possibility that Eddie was “alive” and aware of what was happening to him, even when he was being ripped in half, eaten and eventually partially digested. Not a great way to go in any circumstances

As much as I really love The Lost World, there are some things from the Novel I really wish we could have seen. Such as the Carnotaurus, Dodgson being the villain, the Rex nest, just to name a few. I mean, I'm fine with what we got, however I think more from the Novel would have made the film better. Dodgson being the villain would have made more sense, and connected more to the first film, then just Hammond's nephew that, as much as I like him as an antagonist, basically came out of nowhere. Nevertheless, from what I understand, the reason is because the film was well underway before the book was finished? If so, that's understandable, and again, I'm fine with what we have. However those deleted scenes you mentioned in previous videos are still REALLY unfortunate we didn't see.

+darthlord1997 I agree that they dropped the ball on some of the book's potential, the biggest being chameleonic dinosaurs that we didn't get until Jurassic World(for a few seconds). They could have easily done so by one of two ways. One, make some of the Velociraptors chameleons. There was a nice set up for this in the first novel where a juvenile Raptor changes it's skin color according to it's mood. This ability could have made the adults even more scary than they already were. Two, have one of the hunters go look for Dieter and get picked off by a camouflaging Carnotaurus that surprises him from behind just like the Indominus does to Hamada in JW. Leaving it at that could keep the Carno mysterious and add tension to the group's situation as they continue their travel towards the village. They were originally planning to have Ludlow die at the island like Dodgson does in the book thanks to the buck rex pretending to be a rock which is how it sneaks up on them. This seems like a homage to Crichton's Carnotaurus. As it is, it is lost potential and one of my biggest childhood disappointments. Judging by how the new trilogy won't feature any more hybrids akin to Indominus in the future, we likely won't see any more stealth camouflage in the movies which is a bummer.

I do enjoy TLW the movie, but I've always hated that it deviated SO MUCH from the book, and this video makes it clear that Spielberg and Koepp never, ever intended on doing a faithful adaptation of it, but their own story using its title, a few setpieces and the very bare bones of the plot setup (i.e. there's a second island and competing teams go to it). And although the San Diego sequence evolved from Spielberg's image of the T-rex looking through the window at the kid, the justification for it in-story was to borrow from the *other* Lost World, that written by Arthur Conan Doyle, or, more specifically, it's 1925 movie adaptation involving a rampaging Brontosaurus Challenger and co. bring to London; the book has a rather less impressive, but still satisfying, ending involving a live Pterodactyl being brought back, which vindicates Challenger's claims. Crichton himself borrowed more from Doyle's book than just its title, as well; the Levine character is very Challenger-esque, particularly in his motivation to prove that dinosaurs have survived extinction in an isolated area, and his extremely arrogant, confrontational personality which makes him difficult to get along with, or even like. Unlike Challenger, however, he is completely wrong in almost all of his assumptions. Unaware of the events of the first novel, he believes Isla Sorna is proof of his theory about prehistoric survivals (and is extremely depressed when he discovers the truth). He is right early on that the dinosaurs showing up on the mainland are coming from an island, but wrong about how they came into existence. He's basically a fun deconstruction of Challenger, where the guy with the crazy theories who nobody believes is... totally wrong. There's still dinosaurs, obviously, he's just wrong about *why*. And Challenger never gets anyone killed. Not in the book or in the 1925 film (unless you count a deleted sequence where they're attacked by cannibals and lose one member of their team, which is hardly Challenger's fault). The only fatalities in the expedition in the book are Gomez and his co-conspirator Manuel, who want vengeance against Roxton for killing Gomez's brother, the cruel slaver Pedro Lopez. They're killed in retaliation by Roxton and Zambo, after they strand the main group to die on the plateau, and not by any of Challenger's actions (unless one blames him for failing to do a proper background check on his team members, difficult at the time even with all the preparation put into the expedition). By contrast, Levine rushing off to Site B like an idiot gets his guide Diego killed pretty much immediately after the two arrive (even though Diego wasn't doing himself any favors by ignoring basically everything Levine told him), and after he gets stranded as a result, Malcolm and co. have to come and rescue his dumb ass, which leads to Eddie's death. To be fair to Levine, both deaths are only *indirect* results of his actions, but, still, his decision to rush off half-cocked with only one guy and then losing that guy basically kicked off a chain reaction of events leading to Eddie dying fighting the raptors. And whereas Challenger, despite his boorish personality, had a kind of gruff likability and a magnetism to him through his sheer confidence, Levine just comes off as an annoying dick. Although part of this may because in both instances, the reader is privy from the get-go about whether both characters are right or wrong in their respective beliefs. We know Challenger is right, so we view anyone who challenges (heh) him is wrong, regardless of the soundness of their reasoning; we know he's right not because of any foreknowledge, even knowing the most basic elements of such an old novel, but because it'd be one really boring book if he were wrong. Meanwhile, we have foreknowledge that Levine is wrong about the existence of an actual lost world because of the first book, so his refusal to listen prejudices us against him from the get-go pretty much, with his acerbic personality not helping matters much. So, I guess, a lot of our perception of a character depends on whether we know they're right or wrong. It's why we can like Malcolm despite the fact he can come off as a smug know-it-all sometimes, because we know he's right, because he's basically the primary mouthpiece by which the books/films get a good chunk of their "misuse of science" philosophy across.

the plot for the antagonists made more sense, small team stealing dinosaur eggs not full grown dinos, They could still keep the badass hunter guy his first mate and one or two death fodder guys that would have more impactful deaths like the first movie.

Man I wish Jurassic Park and The Lost World would be picked up again and adapted into a mini-series on HBO or something that actually follow what Michael Crichton wrote in his novel. I personally enjoy both the novel and the movie for their story, however I do find that Roland, Ajay and Peter Ludlow are for more sympathetic characters to watch, than the BIOSYN team in the novel. Though that might be a little bit of bias as I strongly believe the cast of the movie did wonders. Big props to Pete Postlewait, Harvey Jason and Arliss Howard. and having Richard Attenborough back as his version of John Hammond cements the movie as being my favourite of the Jurassic Park movies, and I feel that Fallen Kingdom echos a lot of that theming and character archetypes now that I think about it as I am typing this response. However the characters in Fallen Kingdom echo those from the novel The Lost World a bit more than the Film does. Mills being more like Dodgson in morality and actions. Franklin is basically Arby aged up. Zia seems to take traits from Thorn and Sarah from the Novel as well as that sibling like friendship Kelly has with Arby. For starters :) Just something I thought of.

It's interesting Koepp talks about reduction when the movie actually ADDS characters. In the novel, the bad guy expedition consists of only three guys in a Jeep Wrangler, whereas in the movie, it's a gigantic army of men and vehicles. He also invented another character for the good guy team, Dr. Juttson, instead of using Jack Thorne or Richard Levine. Juttson was eventually cut from the story and his lines divided up among the various other good guys. In particular, I remember that he was the one who had the rivalry with Burke in the script, not Sarah, and the two are have a sort of Professor Challenger/Professor Summerlee style antagonistic relationship with one another after the two groups join forces. Juttson is present in the draft(s) of the script that feature Hammond dying at the end and his funeral, and he's interesting for two reasons. He dies during the raptor attack in the worker village, and was the only other casualty among the gatherers besides Eddie. Cutting him meant that Eddie was the only good guy to die in the film. The other reason he's interesting (and why he may have been considered so superfluous) was that he would've been the only other character besides Carter on either team that didn't have a full name; no draft I've read ever gives him a first name. Does anyone know why Juttson got cut? My theory ties into the idea of reduction Koepp mentions. And I think his goal in making the hunter side bigger, with more people and vehicles, was to make the gatherers seem like the underdog, whereas in the novel, Dodgson and two goons don't exactly come off like much of a threat to anyone, least of all the dinosaurs, especially since their sound device that they use to ward the dinosaurs off malfunctions the second time they use it, making them seem like complete incompetents. By contrast, the huge mercenary team Ludlow hires, led by Roland, is efficient and well-armed and highly effective, and they already outnumbered the gatherers even before Juttson's character was excised from the story. So my thinking is that, in addition to being kind of a superfluous redshirt and lacking any real defining traits beyond his antagonism with Burke (which goes nowhere because Burke dies in the waterfall scene just as he does in the final film), Koepp wanted to make the group that much smaller by eliminating a character, and it was easy enough to write Juttson out for the final version of the script (which I don't believe I've ever seen, myself; if no such draft exists, then the draft with Juttson was used and he was simply ignored during casting and filming), and simply give the lion's share of his dialogue, as well as his rivalry with Burke, to Sarah. My other question is when was Juttson cut? I remember vaguely that Sliders' Jerry O'Connell was rumored for the role (or maybe he was simply rumored and people assumed he'd been considered for Juttson after the fact), and, around the time Jurassic Park III came out, it was rumored that the not-very-Eddie-Like Eddie Carr action figure was actually originally designed to be Juttson. I have no proof of either of these things, though. I do know, though, that there was a very small fan campaign to get Juttson included in the then-unmade fourth movie that petered out and went nowhere, which I was part of, if only because I was obsessed with seeing every unused character get used. I was also a member of a tinier, even less noteworthy "Ed Regis for Jurassic Park 4!" fan campaign. These little campaigns were pitiful in hindsight and never got beyond user post signatures on a few forums (where I went by the screen name "Bloodsucking Lawyer"). Anyway, if (and it's a big if) the Jerry O'Connell rumor is true and so is the rumor about Eddie's action figure originally being made for Dr. Juttson, then Juttson was still being considered as a character for the story up to the casting and merchandising phase, and got cut then, with O'Connell never being cast and Juttson's toy being recycled for Eddie. I'm interested to hear others' thoughts, especially yours, Klayton. Juttson isn't a terribly important footnote in TLW's production, but I still find him and why/when he got cut interesting.

So the idea for the "long grass" scene came from "hunting literature" and not the numerous times Crichton talks about it in both books and when the raptors stalk through it and then pop their heads up when the Triceratops discover their ambush approach... interesting. Maybe if he had of read The Lost World five times he could have saved all the other research.

I love this movie. I saw it twice within a 24 hour period the weekend it came out. It's a fun adventure flick and a very worthy sequel to JP. I don't quite remember too much of the novel (only read it once years ago in middle school) but I do remember noting the differences and actually being pretty happy the film was the way it was.

I can just imagine the conversation between Steven and David that lead to the Raptor Long Grass scene. David: "Hey Steven, I've been doing some research for the movie. I read this really interesting story about Jaguars hunting in the long-grass, not being scene. Its very tense and frightening stuff. Think we can use it for the movie?" Steven: "Jaguars? .........Raptors." David: "Raptors?" Steven (nodding): "Raptors." David (nodding understanding): "Raptors..." But in all seriousness, THIS has given me a greater appreciation for Kelly's role in The Lost World. Back during the summer, I had a movie marathon with some friends of the Jurassic Franchise, and one friend was confused as to why we should "like" John Hammond in that movie...I tried to explain it to him, but he still insisted that Hammond was a bad guy because his desire to keep the animals alive was inherently "selfish." This explanation of Kelly's role in the movie provides the PERFECT answer that I should have given - it connects the plot together. The idea that parents have the desire to protect their young...Hammond is the Father of all the Dinosaurs on Isla Nublar - it's not just about preserving these creatures for the sake of preserving them; they're his children...I kept saying they were his Legacy, because they WERE his legacy...

Do you know what would be awesome? I've been thinking about it for quite a while, while watching your videos. I'm not sure if it's possible but if you could read the entire original novel and the Lost World novel while adding in the pictures like you do with these videos that would be amazing! Maybe in different sets and parts you could get through an entire novel and then move to the next. I'd watch those videos for sure even though I've already read both books. It'd be the closest we'll probably ever get to a movie actually matching the original novels.

I wonder if the scene where the S.S. Venture came crashing into the dock in San Diego was a slight nod to something from the original *Jurassic Park* novel where a ship containing Raptors on board was nearing port before being ordered to return to the island. If so, I wish they had kept the Raptors *WITH* the male T-Rex in San Diego. When Malcolm asked if there were any more dinosaurs on the boat (after the Rex comes out from the cargo hold and begins its rampage), it would have been so cool to see a few Raptors emerging from the boat. After all, they were the suspected reason the crew was killed on board while the boat had no significant damage. If the T-Rex had killed the crew, that boat would have been significantly damaged and possibly would have sunk before it even got to the dock. Just my thought. I might add that the Raptors had too little screen time in this franchise. In the original film, we don't actually see them until one surprises Ellie at the shed. In this film, we don't see them until the "long grass" sequence. In the third film, we don't see them until one attacks Amanda Kirby in that building. In the fourth film, it's not until we see them chasing after a pig in their pen before we see them. And, in the fifth film, Blue is the last surviving Raptor who doesn't show up until Owen meets up with her. Getting back to this film, there are at least two other sequences that they could have used from the original novel as well as one very important plot hole that was never mentioned from the original film. The first sequence is the teen boy who was attacked by a Raptor and the doctor named Roberta "Bobbie" Carter had to find out what "Raptor" meant. She was first told it was a Spanish word that meant "abductor" (or "hupia") who kidnaps a baby or child. Then, she finally found the word in her English dictionary. *raptor* \ noun [derived of L. raptor plunderer, fr. raptus]: bird of prey The second sequence that they could have used is the Compies that attacked people in the village, most notably the baby in its crib where the grandmother discovers the dinosaurs attacking it. To keep the PG-13 rating, both sequences would have had to have been implied and not graphically shown as the novel depicted them. As for the plot hole, the canister containing dinosaur embryos that were left behind after Nedry was killed by the Dilophosaurus. What the heck happened to them? This could have been at least mentioned before going to the second island. Nothing...not one word. Not in the novel or the film version.

Which itself featured references to Doyle's book. In particular, Levine is a rather caustic deconstruction of Professor Challenger. Like Challenger, he's boisterous and arrogant and a know-it-all and difficult to get along with. Unlike Challenger, he's wrong about the existence of prehistoric survivals, and is a poor planner; his hastily thrown-together two-person "expedition" gets his guide killed (a "guide" who doesn't listen and doesn't seem to know about concealing oneself's existence from predators, meaning Levine is a poor judge of character), forcing his friends back in the US to come and rescue his dumb ass, leading to Eddie getting killed. Had he not decided to go ahead with only one guy accompanying him, who immediately gets killed, he wouldn't have turned the whole thing into an ad-hoc rescue operation that endangers two kids and indirectly gets at least one other person killed. This is solved in the film by having the expedition, despite Malcolm's protests, be necessary in order to prevent the exploitation of the island and dinosaurs being brought to the mainland in large numbers. In the book, it was all about rescuing Levine's stupid ass because no one knew about what Dodgson and Biosyn were up to until after he and his goon squad arrived. I think Levine's only redeeming traits are his affection for Kelly and Arby and how he inspires them, and the fact that, after losing his guide Diego, he proves remarkably adept at surviving all by himself on the island.

If I would've read the book after the movie, I would've liked the movie more. I'm a firm believer that movies should be as close to the books as possible, with writers slightly changing scenes as needed. I loved the Lost World right until they put the T-rex on the ship and had him storm through San Diego. That took me right out of the movie and I couldn't get back into it. That's why it's on the bottom of my list for Top 5 Jurassic movies.

I feel like the San Diego ending really hurt this movie for me. After reading the novel it was just such a smarter finale than the movie. I remember the tension being palpable. While as a kid the T-Rex running through the city seemed so cool but now I think it was a bad idea and really lets the movie down. I understand why some things need to be cut to make the movie work but I’ll never understand direct changes to something so brilliant as the true ending to the lost world. While we’re on the topic of being cut, how much cooler would Jurassic Park have been if they’d taken ten extra minutes to include the river scene with the Rex trying to get at grant and the kids!? Still my all time favorite movie but damn that was so tense in the book. Would’ve made for some incredible moments in the movie.

The irony of them trying to trim characters from the book when there were probably 4 times the characters in the movie vs the book which is why I think the book is far more intense. having such a small group vs a completely unrestrained island of dinosaurs. I like the second movie, but I think they went way too overboard with how many were on the island

Klayton, you need to make a longer series of videos on this. It demands more than 8 minutes and change. We'll have to work on the Patreon or something like that. But good video nonetheless. True, Lost World didn't really capture me the way the first film did for a variety of reason and now I understand why and for me it was because this film baked too long on napkins and too many idea sessions that it created more of a headache of a film to follow than the previous entry. I did read both books prior to seeing the movies and now it's standard fare for me to avoid reading the book or re-reading before seeing a movie adaptation because of the intense frustration with all of the many changes that can be made between literary and cinematic versions of a story. But still, I can watch it over and over again along with the third and then have a complete story of the journey from Critchon's mind to the big screen.

I know I’m super late here. Been a fan of the series and yours, Klayton, for years. I finally, FINALLY, read the novels this past month. Wow. I missed a lot. I’m so glad I was able to read them. I love TLW novel. There are scenes in it that make no sense to me, like raptors rolling the boy in this seemingly 600+ lb cage, faster than a car. And the movie has, what to me is, a top 3 worst direction change: San Diego incident with the t-rex. Just too unrealistic for my liking, especially reeling it back to the boat. A better, more realistic edition of both combined, would have been a chef’s kiss from me. Childhood me was infatuated with the “safari” scene in the jeeps and the slide out shooting seat. And the long grass work was unbelievable. Either way, can’t rewrite history. Crichton and Spielberg however, will always be my favorites for the rest of time for these masterpieces.

The glass spidering under Sarah's hands was as scary as anything I'd seen in a movie.
