Okay guys! In this video I go over how Isla Sorna was destroyed. Now the information that I use in this video can be found in Michael Crichton's second Jurassic Park book, The Lost World. This is basically the ending of that novel explained in full. A lot of this stuff was used in the build up for Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom's viral marketing by the Dinosaur Protection Group and it happens to give some insight as to what happened to Isla Sorna! Site B was my favorite island...maybe we will get some info on it one day if we're lucky! :D

The DX prions disease was one of the scariest plot developments in the novel, and made me imagine what Crichton might have done with it if it was introduced to the mainland and adapt to infecting mammals. As such, this disease hasn't been introduced in the film series, but it could reappear. I love Doc Thorne's speech about what is real, living and true at the end, and I made it one of the themes of my book.

I like the DX thing, shows how one small mistake can lead to the ruin of the ambitions of all involved. It's playing the same card as the first novel did (over-reliance on technology and computers, in that case), and but done in a very different way. Also I'm surprised Kelly didn't say "South isn't real!" when Thorne walked away at the last sentence.

The sciences are a diverse, expansive, ever-changing thing. No one scientist is aware of every fact. Sarah Harding knowing it makes sense, since she works directly with animals; Levine didn't know it because his scientific focus was archeology. The scientists on Site B, having been chosen for their genetic expertise rather than their zoological knowledge, probably didn't have a working knowledge of zoo practices. The only people ever mentioned related to Jurassic Park who worked directly with animals before working there with Dr. Harding (Sarah's father, the vet on Isla Nublar, who worked in a zoo) and Muldoon (who was a game warden in Kenya, or something similar). - Lewis

I still wonder what they will do with Isla Sorna in the Movie canon...while it is true that the new Cloned dinosaurs by Masrani effected the ecosystem and many of the dinosaurs had to be shipped out back to Nublar. They never said that no Dinosaurs currently not exist in Sorna. Maybe a smaller population survived? I just hope to see it again.

Myself and many others believe it's entirely possible Isla Sorna is in much better shape than the DPG has let on. Despite the DPG being the "good" to the Extinction Now's "bad," it's still an organization run by people with specific goals in mind. Not _everything_ they reported is necessarily true or entirely accurate, as we could come to find out in Jurassic World 3 or other future content. I know, I'm merely speculating, but we shall see.

Almost wish it could have been in the film. It went the same route as the first film of the Lost World from the silent era, Conan Doyle's book had Challenger just bring back a pterodactyl that flew away. The film required a apatosaurus on the loose terrorising downtown London with the same gusto as Rexy in San Diego.

Even after all this years, I'm convinced that Levine is a dead man walking, and Malcolm and Sarah are lying through their teeth when they assure him he'll be fine. Prion infection in humans is pretty nasty no matter the source, and Chrichton was remarkably informed and accurate about them all through the book, right up until that talk on the boat.

Considering what happened to Gennaro and Muldoon between Jurassic Park and The Lost World, I feel it's only fair that Levine is, indeed, a dead man walking. Especially considering how his carelessness got Eddie killed, Arby horribly mutilated, and brought that prion infection on himself.

? Robert Muldoon is fine. He’s never mentioned in TLW. As for Levine’s fate, early in the book it’s stated by Martin Gutierrez that the disease is not lethal. So even if he were infected, Levine would just get a headache.

It makes me feel sad that Isla Sorna was going to have an extinction in both the book and in the film series, and around the release of Fallen Kingdom I had hope that this island would still exist for the animals. I always liked the island because it has been the primary setting for the dinosaurs and other creatures to roam freely and behave in a wild ecosystem, and there are more dinosaurs there as well and it is the origin location. Of course I like Isla Nublar too because it's the original story setting and where Jurassic Park and Jurassic World take place and it is the home of Rexy and the original Brachiosaurus we meet.

Personally, I don't like the idea of Isla Sorna being destroyed at all. After what happened on Isla Nublar, we got an entirely new, bigger island with many more species, and it was glorious. The end of the second film painted a wonderful picture of the dinosaurs living in harmony away from human interference, as Hammond had been wanting since the '93 incident, and even the third film continued this to some extent. I'm still having trouble wrapping my mind around the illegal species being the main reason Sorna's ecosystem fell off a cliff, though. The Spinosaurus couldn't have killed so many dinosaurs that the entire system fell apart; that's simply ridiculous and improbable, and the same goes for the Ceratosaurus. It's also difficult to believe the Ankylosaurus and Corythosaurus caused problems for the other herbivores on the island at the time considering just how big Sorna was. We didn't even get to see most of it in the films, after all. The explanation seems to be not thought out very well, and just slapped in there to add more weight to the illegal species. Hopefully Sorna will be brought back at some point.
@issacflores2010
@issacflores2010 6 жыл бұрын
Jason Krueger remember the Isla Sorna in the movies is far bigger then it is in the books. That’s what made the ecosystem healthier but evasive dinosaurs like Spinosaurus , no doubt created by that bastard Wu, led to the island failing.
@DarthPyrusTheVirus
@DarthPyrusTheVirus 6 жыл бұрын
@@issacflores2010 I can see this explanation working for novel Sorna, but film Sorna is far, far bigger in scale and wouldn't logically have this issue.
@jurassicpark1fan920
@jurassicpark1fan920 6 жыл бұрын
It might not be logical but the intention of Spinosaurus was to have a dinosaur that could cause an extinction on the island. That was stated on one of JP3 featurettes so illogical yes but ever since JP3 the franchise has been pretty much just "popcorn flicks" where the movies are just meant to be entertaining.
@DarthPyrusTheVirus
@DarthPyrusTheVirus 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, it was stated in the behind-the-scenes feature, but there's a difference between intention and what ends up on screen. Horner also described the Spinosaurus as being 60 feet, but that never materialized. I'm not saying the Spinosaurus didn't have an effect on the ecosystem, as dumb as it sounds, but I don't think it was the biggest as some are claiming.
@CornishMoose
@CornishMoose 6 жыл бұрын
It’s really not that hard to believe at all, our history is full of examples of new species being introduced to an ecosystem that cause great harm and even lead to species becoming extinct. It’s the reason some countries have such strict laws about animals being brought in. It’s very possible that introducing new creatures to Sorna could have a devastating impact, especially when coupled with the strip mining of the island to fill the new park.
@melvinshine9841
@melvinshine9841 6 жыл бұрын
The idea that a single non-human animal can wreck an entire ecosystem as big as Sorna by itself just seems silly to me. Nature doesn't work that way. I highly, highly doubt the Spinosaurus was so OP that it could take on healthy Triceratops, stegosaurs, and massive sauropods several times and walk away unscathed. I doubt the I.rex would survive a run in with the mated T.rex pair and I know the Spinosaurus wouldn't. Invasive species can ruin an ecosystem, but you need more than one individual.

Then we get a shot of Sorna, we then zoom very deep into the forested island. The caption "Something has survived" appears. Then we see him. The baby Trex from the second film all grown up with it's mate, standing back away from a Stegosaurus herd lazily moving around while the we see JP3 raptors leaping in the background, and even farther in the background we see a herd of parasolophus and apatosaurs, then the lost world pteradon lands gracefully on the tree branch and the movie ends. Personally, I've always felt the DX disease was a strange (not bad) plot point. Hammond and Wu, for all of their faults, weren't idiots and would have quickly realized how problematic the DX disease would be the second it popped up. They were just about ready to open the park in JP1, so you would really assume that the current stock of animal would have been immune to the disease (seriously, given Wu's ego, curing a disease through genetic manipulation would easily have topped his priority charts, as that could provide a cure for virus and prion based disease as a whole). I actually would have preferred it to have been something like rabies making the jump from local fauna to the dinosaurs, something they would have no immunity against and wouldn't present an issue till the dinos were all roaming free. Also can anyone think of a more terrifying scenario then being stuck on an island filled with rabid dinosaurs, such potential!

No it would have slipped into the shallows of San Francisco Bay and evaded detection that way eventually heading south into warmer waters. A huge food source would have been available to it ie. Great whites, orcas, even smaller species of whale. It could come ashore at any tourist beach and dine on a dozen or two surfers and tourists [a great movie scene] then just slip quietly away back into the sea to continue its journey south. That's the beautiful thing about Spinosaurus and Baryonix - as much at home in water add on land.

It doesn't quite add up that the illegal dinosaur species could have wiped out the Lost World. It seems more likely that the novel version idea would make sense to also be a factor. One of your older videos even suggested about the islands geothermic dangers. I wonder, do you think all of those factors combined destroyed Isla Sorna's dinosaurs?

It's very possible. On the website it states that paleontologists and experts debated for a long while on what the exact cause was. They went back and forth between all of what's brought up in the book :D

I don't get it. It was always tonely wrong. We have great satisfying Dinosaur scenes, like the baby rexes eating Dodgson, the plant eating herd tearing up the Jeep for there eggs, and the apatosaurs and parasolophus living in a symbiotic relationship. Then just to end it with "And they all died the end"

I agree. DX would have worked better in the first book. The first book had a more heavy theme. The second booked leaned a little more for action and comedy in some aspects.

Man, that speech about what is real resonates these days. Scientific language has gotten so over-complicated and easily manipulated that all you have to do is sound smart when saying something incredibly false and fantastic to convince someone that you're telling facts, when really all you're doing is spreading misconception under the guise of intelligence.

"At it's core, Jurassic Park is a story about people making bad decisions because they can't foresee the consequences for them." That's never stated better anywhere than the events surrounding the DX Virus. I find your take on Jack Thorne interesting...What movie is that character from, Congo or Serpent in the Rainbow? Either way, as for me, I always imagined Thorne as being an older guy, with a grey beard and a little bit of hair left on his balding head. For some reason - and I have no idea why - the image of Jack Horner comes to mind when I read the novel - which I admit is odd. Anyway, this scene is infamous for me, because I like Thorne's character so much, that I cite him as being the smartest person in the Lost World. Reading the descriptions of how he works and his own philosophy are so enjoyable...But this final bit at the end of the novel always bothers me... In a sense, your portrayal of the events actually has helped me form a new perspective on it. I initially thought that Thorne's rant about Protons or Electrons and the Superego was just him denouncing Scientific Discovery...which seems odd considering that Science is what keeps the man employed and educated... But what I think Thorne is REALLY knocking...is Faith. Now, I still think that Thorne is wrong, but he's sort of has a good point. Faithful people have ultimately been mocked because their beliefs have been viewed as insubstantial, but what I think Thorne is pointing out is about how Theories and Scientific Belief are built on something just as insubstantial. Now theories are actually a collection of scientifically proven facts that support a conclusion, but at the same time, what Thorne is knocking is how vehemently Scientists Cling to their notions and beliefs based on Theory. Technically speaking, why should a Scientist get defensive - even zealously - about a Proton or an Ego? Protons are so small that we can't see them with our own eyes - though we technically HAVE seen them - and Egos are just a name we give to the Personality functions of our brains... I think that Thorne - being an engineer - is stating that people should put their beliefs - their faiths - into something that's more concrete, something physical - substantial; something you can depend on. You don't necessarily need to know that the water in the ocean is made up of H2O molecules, because at the end of the day, you can't deny that the water is there. It's real.

I have a dark headcannon about the ending. That the DX prion spreads to humans and either destroys a large amount of the human population or causes humanity's extinction. A species of billions wiped out by a disease created by accident,an unintended consequence of Jurassic Park.

If i could have the opportunity to fan create a movie, it would be like a "found footage"-esque final hours of the island that is like the "REAL" story of what happened on the island. Id make the prion contamination the passive secondary antagonist to the real main villain of the movie, hubris. New equipment fails and the hurricane would have knocked out power on Sorna enough for animals to escape. But it would be done a survival horror/lord of the flies style where its not like a mass breakout all at once, it starts slow and crecendo's to people fighting for their lives as the island is evac'd, only id make so it's never explained if anyone lived to evac, but it's evident a lot of people died. It would validate the notion an alternative narrarive had to be put in place to protect Hammond's image to the public. Hammond spared no expense, so id make the humans have a sense of false security that theyre always in control. This would lead to people turning on each other as time passes and things become more dire. But how does the footage get found, you ask? Id connect it to before JP2 where Hammond sent a small recon team to the island, off the record, to do a sweep of the island's facilities to purge any remaining intel that his group of experts, he later plans to send(jp2), could find. This team would be the secondary story line of how they come across the recordings found in a locked maintenance shack that was broken into from the ceiling through a window pane. Evidence of a struggle and claw marks are found and in different parts of the shack lie piles of bones, tattered clothing and some tasers.

I remember this. Not sure if it means that the island would go extint with this disease. It just means that the dinos die young but not young enough to have children. This means more predators which means like the film verson there are more predators killing off other dinosaurs which means eventually the downfall of most of the island. I wonder if the last film will touch on this disease? The first film had the sick tric which was those berries and stones which was in the book but I think its a hint that these dinosaurs could not tolerate many modern plants and berries and diseases. There was also something about the dilophasaurus getting a fungal infection around its frills but I am not sure where that bit of knowledge came from.

This is good stuff as always. I do hate that the films never implied Isla Sorna was in any sort of trouble. The carnivore to herbivore ratio was never mentioned, no disease was ever mentioned. Hell, Hammond himself stated the direct opposite when he said the population had flourished, despite InGen believing the post-Hurricane Clarissa dinosaurs would just die off without their care. There's really no reason to believe Sorna was in danger, even in the third film. I know the DPG workers were told to essentially take Sorna out of the picture by any means necessary, but I think some of their stuff was _too_ matter-of-fact and not ambiguous enough, namely pinning the blame of Sorna's decline on the introduction of the Spinosaurus and others. They did offer other explanations, such as disease and whatnot, but they should have kept it at that. Anyway, I'm beginning to ramble. Until next time.

I love this theory or “fantasy “ if you will haha in all honesty you’re probably spot on man but I wish they would give us more to chew on in the films post JP3 now. For all we know there’s still another island of dinosaurs 87 miles away from Nublar. If it wasn’t for the DPG page. I think it’s very lazy not to include what the hell happened to Site B. for god sakes in Star Wars they’ll give you every single detail disappointing or not I might add. But Colin is a great filmmaker and I think it’s time he gives the JP community answers on film in JW3.

Hi Klayton, what’s your opinion on the dramatic change in the behaviour of the raptors between the first and second books? I always thought it was a bit strange that in the first book the raptors are organised, socialised with caring parents and well looked after nests, displaying advanced social behaviour. Then in the second book we see aggressive vicious raptors which don’t look after their young, happily engage in cannibalism and have messy broken uncared for nests. I don’t remember any suggestion that these raptors are a different species or anything else to explain the difference in behaviour.

That doesn't make any sense, the original raptors wouldn't have had that guidance either so who taught them? Also who taught the wild bred raptors on nublar since their eggs were laid by escaped raptors who were subsequently recaptured. None of these raptors were raised properly yet the ones on Nublar had full socialization and ordered packs and the ones on Sorna didn't. As for being explained in the book, the book explains why the ones on Sorna are feral but not why the ones on Nublar aren't.
