For all those asking, the POE port on the side is just basically a volt meter to test what voltage you're getting from that cable, regardless of the source, POE injector or POE capable switch... but in order for you to trace cables you will still need to plug the tester on one side and mapping end on the other side of the same cable. So POE will not be present during mapping. Also per the instruction manual: NOTE: DO NOT attempt to use Hub Blink function when connected to a Power over Ethernet (PoE) active port.

What happens if you accidentally plug the tester or one of the test and map ends into PoE? I'm looking to buy this and wanna know if it's fool proof like the Fluke one?
@itoothitooth49433 жыл бұрын
Can the VDV Scout Pro 3 be used to trace a POE RJ45 cable? It seems the the power on the cable would not allow the trace. The only thing I can think of is to turn off the power to the cable and do a trace after that with a remote MAP I.D.

Power over Ethernet is becoming bigger each day. In NJ you need a license for anything over 10 volts. This includes POE!

The cases for the scout have always been pretty great. The 853 model is pretty dang cool with the new features, but kinda wish they woulda changed the cases a tad bit to distinguish better from model to model. Pretty cool though. Liked the review, as ALWAYS, as you show the products “in use”, which is great. Cheers✌🏼

Bout pulled the trigger on the wrong pro 3. Saw that it was $12 cheaper a week ago, so i paused only to discover that it didn't have the PoE port. Instead, almost double the price packaged with a kit that I have no interest in. Tool only?

There is quite a price difference between VDV501 852 and VDV501 853... Am I correct in assuming the 852 do everything the 853 can but only has one smart remote? And is the separate probe really needed if you have the mapping remote since they not only locate the cable but test the pairs for continuity as well? Seem redundant to me. Thank you for the great video!
@SparkyChannel4 жыл бұрын
You have it correct, yes. The 853 is more of a kit and the 852 just has the essentials with a considerably lower price.
@HiltonRalphs3 жыл бұрын
The probe is much quicker to use. Remember you only need one end connected with a RJ45 to use the probe. Imagine someone pulls out the wires from a patch panel, the remote ends on the wall boxes are fine and you're not going to want to add RJ45s to every cable just to see which is which. That's where the probe comes in handy. I even bought the separate toner to use one non-terminated cable.
@williamgollatz1911 Жыл бұрын
The probe is necessary. Suppose you are on location, and there is a 24 port switch already in operation. Suppose you need to find the port for a cable because some jackass was lazy and didn't label. You put the mapper on the end then pull out every cable one by one to test, disrupting service and taking up a lot of time? No. You set toning at the end and go to the switch with a probe and find the 2-3 candidate ports.

Thank you for this video. I've been scratching my head for days trying to understand why my Scout Pro 3 wasn't telling me the PoE voltage on my wire. It's because I have the 851 model. I'm completely turned off by Klein Tools now, for naming both products "Scout Pro 3". What's the point of numbering IF you're not going to INCREASE the number for each new model? Stupidity.

@Sparky Channel. Thanks Bill for another thorough review for the new Scout Pro 3. Bought the original Scout Pro 3 without the PoE function based on your last review. Love it. I think I can live without the PoE test function especially at the price. Hope you and your family stay safe and well.

What's the difference between the 852 and 853?
@PixelRubble4 ай бұрын
Looks like the final number indicates the kit. VDV501-851 : Starter Kit VDV501-852 : Locator Remote Kit (includes POE+) VDV501-853 : Smart Remote Kit (includes POE+) I bought the starter kit thinking I could just get more items as needed. I wish I had seen this video before I made my purchase. Oh well.

Towards the end when you tested the longer cable, why did it not say pass and only showed pins 1-2? Is it because it is a crossover cable? How do you get pass to show on a crossover?
@MrNateSPF3 жыл бұрын
The length test is different from the connectivity test, it's done by pairs so if one is shorter than the others you'd know where there's a problem. If a crossover cable is wired properly the screen will display Xover instead of Pass.

I wonder how this tester reacts to crossover cables, ISDN cables, etc. Does it show an error like some older models or does it recognize them ?

The tester has separate port for testing POE. If I don't know what is the on the other end of the cable the regular switch\POE switch\damaged cable? What would be if I connect cable with POE current present (48V POE+ or so called passive POE 12-24V) to the "regular" port on the top of the tester? Can it damage tester?
@CarlosDuben3 жыл бұрын
It will not damage the tester. I've done this, plugged in a POE enabled cable into the top of the scout pro 3 to test the cable length and it just gives you a warning that there's POE but no black smoke...

@@tschubb1992 sorry I don't understand your question, I don't know what you mean by "hub feature". *edit: So I just found out about the hub blink feature per klein: "Hub blink mode to identify port location on a hub or a switch" Per the instruction manual : NOTE: DO NOT attempt to use Hub Blink function when connected to a Power over Ethernet (PoE) active port.
