Tracing a de-energized circuit through drywall
I apologize for the shotty video, it is difficult to film and use the tool at the same, plus I’m a complete amateur with a camera. Lol

Thanks for the video. This made up my mind. I know how it works for energized circuits, I already have a tool for that. This is what I need for um-energized circuits.

@@iLLuMNaTi it has a bit of a learning curve. If possible clip the common onto a ground that is not part of the cct you’re trying to trace. Cheers

Did the same process in a recently purchased house, which led me into the attic where I found an open-ended 12/2 cable surrounded by insulation. For 20 years it sat like that, with live power. Complete insanity.

Its a great tool for $250.00. So far its been pretty accurate. I haven’t tested it through road pavement for parking lot lights yet. I will post another video once I try that out.

If you are using this in commercial applications then are you saying it will pick up the signal through EMT conduit?
@mikestoolfun
@mikestoolfun 5 ай бұрын
@@reiserx i have traced cct’t in EMT. I connect to the wire i am tracing and the common on a separate ground in a different conduit. I usually have an 80% success. I have also been able to locate ccts in buried pvc conduit. Hope this helps.

Quick question, when you have this plugged into a live circuit, it looks like there is an energized symbol on the receiver. If you use it to find a breaker in a panel, and you turn off the breaker, does the energized symbol on the receiver disappear to confirm you found the correct breaker?
@mikestoolfun
@mikestoolfun 2 жыл бұрын
The symbol only appears when the circuit is energized as a warning that the circuit is “live”. The symbol turns off when the circuit is de-energized to indicate that it is no longer live. I use this tool to find tripped breakers (de-energized) in commercial buildings with multiple panels. I have run into situations where the breaker is tripped, but ls still in the on position. Also… If you are looking for a basic circuit tracer to shut off live circuits, and is easy to use, The ET310 is a great inexpensive circuit tracer for most residential applications.

Thanks for the quick reply. I’m an industrial electrician but do a lot of commercial and resi as well. I have a Ideal Suretrace I currently use and it work well for the most part, but it can be finicky. The big thing is when I’m at a panel and I kill a breaker, I like to know it’s the right one. The Suretrace has a little lightning bolt that tells you but sometimes it’ll still flash with the circuit deenergized which I don’t like.

The sure trace is very similar to the Klein ET450. Its a great tool as well. The sure trace is more user friendly, as the Klein ET450’has a bit of a learning curve. I wouldn’t buy the Klein if you already have the sure trace. Cheers

I'm looking for something to locate wires in conduit about a foot deep, but sometimes a bit deeper. Does the suretrace or the Klein one have enough power to identify through that much soil?
@OggyBleacher

did the wire reach the panel? did u add a junction box to extend it?? was there space for a breaker?
@mikestoolfun
@mikestoolfun Жыл бұрын
The wire did reach the panel and there was space in the panel. It was a renovation the previous owner starter but did not finish. There were a few issues that had to be addressed. The new owner ended up opening walls and having it all properly inspected and fixed.

Somebody did some very crappy work not hooking the stove up. Thats just bad business. I was wondering if I should buy this. I've been working on alot of houses lately that honestly have very crappy wiring and no one labeled the panel.

My honest opinion.. for the $250.00 Canadian. Its worth it. It has a bit of a learning curve, but once you figure it out, it becomes an asset. I know a few people that have purchased it and once they learned how to use it, they love it. .

This tracer is not worth the money I have it. The only reason to buy it is if you have a non energized circuit
@mikestoolfun
@mikestoolfun Жыл бұрын
Its a $250.00CAD tracer that does up to 480V. For me its worth every penny. The next comparable product is $1500.00CAD. I have to trace energized 347V device often, and hands down, this product is top shelf. I don’t recommend it for residential electricians. The basic 120v tracer works best. (Unless you are troubleshooting stoves/ranges)

What do you recommend as an alternative?
@Nuf_Nivah
@Nuf_Nivah Жыл бұрын
@@johnelstad it depends on what you are tracing a energized circuit there are bunch of different types of tracer’s. But if you are trying to find a non energized circuit they make a tone generator. It will allow you to find the wires.

Makes me wonder if you have a bad unit. I've traced EMT behind drywall and I've even traced #2 copper conductors buried 24" under soil. I paid $199 plus tax and it works just as well as the Greenlee and Ideal $1,500 units the company had. A couple guys even started borrowing mine instead of using the company's tracers. And it is 600v rated which is extremely nice in old factories and warehouses where 480v is everywhere.
