Why does rain water need to be filtered? Both my plants and animals prefer rain water over the tap. The plants I used to test the tap water died, while the rain water plants thrived. So why do we filter rain water?

Miriam, do you live in S. America? If so I have a question. I have heard that China has been investing heavily in Brazil and other countries, buying farmland, radio and print media/television. Have you seen any such occurrence in your experience? In the US , China has been buying every farm they can get as well as other things. I am worried about this causing conflict in the future. I think the flow pipes should enter at the bottom of the barrel not at the top and drop to the bottom. The vertical drop in the pipes in this example are a route for water to bypass the filtration medium. As the gravels and rocks would not form a good seal with the vertical pipe area and lots of water would flow up through this gap route to overflow.

I like such installations! For a biofilter in my optionion the system needs oxigen. I installed a similar system to clean a garden pond. I take some water from the pond flush it over a filter system like yours an give the system oxigen 50l/min. One cycle lasts 2 hours and the water get back in the pond after that time. The next cycle is starting. The principle is similar - seperate biological and chemical dirt or simple dust to clean it with bacteria and oxigen. The result is impressive a murky and musty pond become clear in three month.

If he had done it correctly, he doesn't need to rinse anything. The fact one drum is almost a repeat of the other drum doesn't improve the filtration by any means. Notice that he didn't show the final product. I knew from the start with his design that the final water will still be dirty.

@@alphainfinitum3445im no expert by any stretch, so im thoroughly confused by his design. There seems to be a lot of wishing going on. For example, just because pipes go from here to there is not a guarantee that the water will go. And I don't understand the bottom to top filtration at all. Cant this be one barrel, gravity fed top to bottom and work the first time? The mosquito netting was a good idea, but I think I would have sprung for playground sand. And isn't the charcoal supposed to be activated? Sorry to bug you but I'm confused and no one else seems to be the least bit critical.

Only change I would consider is a cut of valve between the 2 barrels & an easy disconnect so you can clean or replace the 2nd barrel with the charcoal with a fresh barrel. This would make it so you didn't have the wait time to recharge the carbon filter half. Just swap the barrels & you're good. Clean the now dirty one & repeat as needed.

The reason I have not started collecting rain water is because i saw videos and the water is very dirty. I wonder how many drums I need for this? How often it requires drum cleaning? Hello, Very nicely made video. I am a chemical engineer and do not understand the logic of having the large gravel at the bottom of both tanks. Your drawing shows it as a once-through upflow system but actually I think I saw it was recycling from the tank. Did you show a drawing of the whole 2-filter tank pump circulation scheme? Really great work you do. I think my family in South Africa has application for this. You show also a charcoal filter separately. Would this be within the system too? Thanks very much.

Not trying to be rude here but your system is flawed. Rainwater goes into the base of all the material you put in, has to fill up the barrel to nearly the top to pour over into the next barrel. So the first barrel will never empty of water even if the system is closed off. Then the second barrel needs to full up nearly to the top before it can flow to the house so it will also always have the be full. The majority of the idea is sound...just where your inlets and outlets are placed in my opinion are not conducive. Just my opinion obviously do whatever you want but, i would say to attach the water inlet in the top and the outlet on the bottom so the water travels through the filter media and you wouldn't need as much pump head pressure to do the job either.
@CallMeJustMSir

Then he need 2 levels filtration system so the gravity will do the work. But i guess he doesn't have the space to do that so solving that with one level system + pump is the solution here

I also watched the video, and i really admire and inspired, by his method of laying the pipes in the tanks. i thought since the water flows from the buttom to the top, he could've adopt the small smaller smallest order of applying the rocks sand and charcoal. This could have make the system operationally effective.

There’s no reason you couldn’t utilize a system like this to recycle all of your home’s water. Even your garbage disposal water and black toilet water. The only thing about that is is that god definitely need to implement both an ozone generator and reverse osmosis for the water, too. 1st stage, which’d be the main IBC tote connecting all of the waste would have need to have the ozone. Next stages would be what this gentleman has done. Then your final stage would be reverse osmosis. Perfect water even when using disgusting water.

Hi Mr. Robert thank you for your video. very illustrative. But if you allow some observations, there is something important about the use of plastics in pipes and containers. the use of these products generates MICROPLASTIC in the whole water system and ends up being polluting to the environment. One option although it may be more expensive, but you could consider the use of copper in the pipes (maybe in containers it could be very expensive almost unaffordable), and in the tanks, maybe the use of some kind of coating on the inner walls of the tanks, some kind of natural resins or non-petroleum products) And also the mosquito netting you have to ensure the use of non-plastic elements. Another observation is the design of the tanks, think of a system of removable layers because as it is now and thinking about maintenance and cleaning it could be very complicated to service and clean and replace the whole system instead of replacing by layers.

I'd add diatomaceous earth and a back flush system. Imitate techniques used for pool filters, because they are known to actually work at removing harmful pathogens. Ultimately you probably still need some chlorine, because bacteria will grow in your tanks even if you have a micron size particle filter.

I have no idea why people bother with sand and gravel and all that nonsense. Just fill both with straight ground up charcoal, run till the water runs clear and call it good. The charcoal will do the same job of filtering out debris and particulates like all those other layers do and still give you clean water and it will last a LOOOOT longer with less maintenance because all that crap stays on top instead of getting down between the rocks and stuff. Just scrape the mess off the top and recap it. Just doesnt make sense to me.

If what he was trying for was a slow sand filter, this is completely backwards. The way this is set up, it will only filter particles and debris, not bacteria, virii, and parasites. A slow sand filter has a biological component that eats nearly all the harmful stuff that can live in water and affect humans. In a slow sand filter, you slowly add water to the top of a barrel filled with progressively larger particles as the water travels down the column, and in that first sand layer, a biofilm will form that stops anything harmful from going further down the barrel. In the bottom, you place a bunch of crushed activated charcoal to catch any chemicals that have slipped through. A mature filter with a fully developed biofilm doesn't let a lot of water through, maybe 10 litres per hour, but the water that comes out is completely safe to drink.

I just realized two logical mistakes for that instalation. 1. the filter should have been installed before water tank. Because the organic mater on the roof can get into the tank easily and microorganism can find the opportunity to reproduce. 2. you add extra load on motor. The water could have been got into firstly filter and than tank with gravity the motor would flow the water directly to fitting.

If you collect rainwater from a clean surface into a clean tank there's no need for a filter. Why filter something that's already clean? If you feel you need to filter your drinking water use a ceramic filter candle that will last for tens of thousands of gallons and only filter the small amount of water you need for drinking. Btw there are few nutrients in rain water that may allow bacterias to survive. A filter similar to the one described here might be incorporated into a grey water recycling system where you actually input some nutrients for bacterias to survive on.

Every home and business should install a rain water collection and storage system along with solar panels. Even in areas where rain is infrequent it is crazy to waste the little rain that does fall and waste it. We need to stop planting green lawns and switch to local native plantings around homes. It is crazy to plant lawns and build golf courses in dry desert areas. We waste too much water and electricity.

If the rainwater doesn't have any large debris in it, what benefit does the large gravel provide, instead of just more sand?

great work! i always wanted to know how one of these work, but i must admit that i would have never come up with the idea of putting a black cat in the filter. Does it go together with the Charcoal or with the gravel?

You should have placed first drum 2-3 feet higher than the second one. That would have minimised the overflow problem

Disguise, irritating, we want to see how the sausage is made but we don’t want to see the pig getting killed and we don’t wanna see the fennel getting harvested and we don’t want to see you know what I mean the spices being gathered from all over the world also what’s bad about this design is how often do you have to clean it because eventually that’s going to get clogged and then what do you do so you need a way to replace and or fix or clean with this has done so a cartridge or maybe some sort of filter pack that you can take out cause this is crazy

why flowing water from bottom to top ? you can filter it top to bottom and invert the order of filter material, then you wouldn't need those moskito need because bigger grain wont fall dont when smaller one are under it !

You need to replace the gravel in the barrels after some time. How do you do that when you conntected the barrels in a way that you would have to destroy the connection to move them? How do you even want to lift these heavy barrels?

So is three a simpler way to maybe dig a trench, let the run off water percolate down to a perforated pipe where the cleaned water would then be pumped into a tank and used as irrigation water?

To kill Bacterial and viral loads you Need a UV sterilizer or chlorine treatment. Rainwater system do not filter these out but provide a breeding ground for many pathogens. Only concerned when keeping water for storage long term. Fresh rainwater does not need much in the way of filtering unless near a major city. Your best option without these sources of power or chemicals is Boiling before drinking for 3 to 5 minutes. ( rolling boil will kill 99.9% ) Then if you have further chemical concentration concerns you need Bio char ( charcoal ) jammed packed tightly in a tube and slowly pour the water through it. This will remove heavy metals and certain chemicals but not all. Boil then through char is a super powerful way to clean up water when not having access to professional filtration equipment. Its what we do here for our rain water. I do have chlorine access but its to shock our sytem once per month to reduce viral and pathogen loads in the system. I use 1 teaspoon of sodium hypochlorite per 100 gallons of water when needed. Always keep containers out of sunlight or it breeds cyanobacteria. This will attack the liver in humans.
