The Klezmer style is, to a large extent, the result of a made-up tradition. Inspired by the Jewish music bands from Eastern Europe, it was reconstructed in the 1970s using old slate recordings and is based on the performance of various repertories with a characteristic style that partly derive from synagogal chant. The ensemble She'Koyokh, one of the biggest names in Klezmer today, performs a repertory that spans the Sephardic to Ashkenazi traditions, and also includes non-Jewish songs from the Balkans.
