crosstrainingenduro.com tractionerag.com If you ride in hot weather, you know how hot even a ventilated jacket gets for adventure riding. I always avoided wearing mesh jackets as the idea of sliding down the road with such flimsy gear was not appealing. But eight years ago I was sick of sweating so settled on the Klim Induction jacket. It's possibly the most ventilated jacket on the market, but also comes with armour and abrasion resistant materials that meet the seond highest standard CE rating... very simpressive for a mesh jacket. Expensive. Yes. Is it worth the money? Lets find out with our Klim Induction mesh jacket long term review. Here are the main claims to fame of the Klim Induction mesh jacket. What is Rihno stitch technology? Sounds impressive, but absolutely no explanation on what it actually is. Try googling it. There is zero information. The ventilation on the Klim Induction mesh jacket? Brilliant. There is so much mesh that even in first gear you feel air pushing through. Very high quality zipper. Heaps of reflective bits for safety. Plenty of pockets. Including this cool little pouch for your sunglasses. The fleece lined collar is very comfortable. When so many jackets are coming in black only, it's great to see Klim offering high visibility colour schemes. There's a removable liner that is fully waterproof, even after all these years. It's the armour and abrasion resistance of the Klim Induction mesh jacket I'm really interested in, normally the downside of mesh jackets. Lets start with abrasion resistance. The mesh is Klim's Karbonite material, they claim it is 750% more abrasion resistant than normal mesh. However, there is no evidence of their testing, or explanation of how they tested it. And against what. So we have to take Klim's word for it. And I did come across forums posts where guys said it held up well in their accidents though. And it has passed the AA standard for abrasion testing, the second highest rating possible. The abrasion zones for elbows and shoulders of the Klim Induction mesh jacket? These are rated to 840D. It is enough? Well most textile jackets rely on a 600 denier fabic which always fails in abrasion tests. And the Klim Induction jacket has passed the AA standard for abrasion and impact testing. On to the Klim Induction mesh jacket armour. The D30 EVO armor is soft and comfortable compared to most other options. It's pretty advanced stuff as under impact it suddenly stiffens to disperse the impact. Nice. Again it's good enough to reach the AA standard. Another thing I liked, the Klim Induction mesh jacket is made in Vietnam, a country with a very solid textile industry from French colonial days. So much bike gear is now made in China where quality control ain't so hot. And given how China is acting on the world stage lately I'd rather not support them until they behave a bit better. So what's not good about the Klim Induction mesh jacket? I have zero complaints so scoured the internet for criticisms. Some were about the jacket not fitting correctly, I ignored these there are plenty of overweight riders out there and you really should test the fit before buying it. One rider said he didn't like the way the wrist cinches strap up. But overall the user reviews average 4.7 to five out of five stars. If you have the money, then this is probably the most ventilated jacket you can buy that meets the second highest safety standards. I had a quick look at the main competitors and they either aren't rated or meet the third standard at best. Here ends the Klim Induction mesh jacket review.
Abrasion and tear-resistant Klim Karbonite mesh
Rhino-stitch technology
840D abrasion zones at elbows and shoulders
UV-resistant material
Fleece-lined collar
Integrated D3o armor system
3M Scotchlite reflective materials
Stretch material at elbows
YKK zippers
Jacket passes CE Rating AA prEN 17092-3

LONG TERM REVIEW: I've been riding in this jacket for six years now and it still looks and feels brand new. I haven't been for a slide down the road so I haven't tested the abrasion resistance. But it has been certified AA under the CE requirements which is very good for a textile jacket. WHAT ABOUT THE KLIM VOYAGER AIR PANTS?: I didn't bother reviewing the Klim Voyager pants as they are discontinued. But old stock is still selling, just saw that Revzilla as them for 40% which isn't bad. They have been excellent vented pants - my only gripe? You can only get them in black so they start to warm up sitting traffic lights in summer. But so ventilated all is good once moving. AN EVEN HIGHER RATED JACKET? I did find a mesh jacket that uses Kevlar to be even more abrasion resistant but almost double the price, ouch! Check it out here: www.motoport.com/product/motoport-air-mesh-jacket/ QUESTIONS ABOUT KLIM'S CUSTOMER SERVICE: Klim was originally owned by Mormons in Utah, in 2012 they sold out to Polaris. The original management team is still in place though. Some claim that customer service has dropped since then. Klim had only averaged about 3.9 out of 5 for reviews on their Facebook page recently. From what I can see, some are unhappy with the warranty, and quite a few say some gloves are poor quality... but generally most still seem to think the riding gear is good quality. facebook.com/KlimUSA/reviews/ LIFETIME WARRANTY? Some mistakenly believe this applies to all Klim gear. But it only applies to Klim's very expensive top bracket gear. www.klim.com/warranty OTHER AA RATED OPTIONS? Are you using comparable adventure riding gear that meets the AA rating under the CE certification system? And not just the armour. Is the material AA rated for abrasion resistance if you slide down the road? Other AA rated gear to look at: Rev'it Cayenne, Rev it Sand 4, Adventure Spec Mongolia jacket, RST Pro... WHY PAY SO MUCH? Regular viewers know I take a budget approach to everything when I can. But occasionally someone will say why do use expensive Klim gear and Gaerne SG12 boots? My approach is go cheap when I can. But spend money for quality gear when it matters. My Klim gear is AA rated so I won't need skin grafts if I slide down the road. If you check the other AA rated brands, they are all roughly the same price. Good protective fabric costs money. Boots? After two sets of multiple fractures in my lower legs, I won't go cheap on boots anymore. And a survey of hundreds of riders indicates Gaerne is the best... probably followed by Forma then Sidi. IS THERE A CHEAPER WAY TO GET AA PROTECTION? Not that I'm aware of. You could buy a cheap jacket and wear body armour underneath... an option I wasn't keen on. And if you want AA rated body armour it will cost a lot anyway. Cheap leather jackets will be AA rated and expensive double stitched ones will even be AAA rated. This might be okay if you ride in cool weather most of the time, but we are in the sub-tropics and need ventilated jackets most of the gear. Subscribe for weekly adventure & dual sport vids! I was in Atlanta, Georgia last summer and it was HOT!!! On the interstate this black guy passed me on a crotch rocket doing a wheelie and going at least 100 mph. All he was wearing were boxer shorts and flip flops. No helmet, no shirt, no socks, no sunglasses, no gloves and no concern for his safety. It was amazing!

i've been using the same combo of Induction and Voyager for the past two seasons and it's been surprisingly great! really happy with my choice, in terms of comfort, breathability, and impact protection (i've upgraded to ce2 armor because i could). have not tested abrasion resistance, but i have faith in it since in my slide in revvit airwave a less tough material held up well (torn to bits but only a few scratches on skin, and that's from 230kmh)

Great to hear! The only issue I've had with the pants is they only came in black. Would have preferred a lighter color as you can feel them heating up when sitting at traffic lights. But the ventilation is awesome. I see Revzilla is selling off the last superceded stock at 40% off... not a bad deal. www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/klim-voyage-air-pants

Durability does seem to be good so far. I haven't been using mine for all of the eight years I've had it... probably four of those. But given the way so much Chinese made stuff falls apart with age even if not using it I"ve been very happy so far with the Klim.

Motocap.com.au tested the Rev’it airwave 2 and it performed rather badly. Similar or worse than denim at about 0.5 seconds impact abrasion time. I don’t know if the airwave 3 is more protective but I imagine it would get an A rating which is similar to denim, at about 0.5 seconds of slide time. Jackets sold in the EU and the UK must have been certified to EN17092. So the airwave 3 probably is but the manufacturer probably didn’t mention it because an A rating is rather weak. Marketing folks have a hard time with EN17092 if it’s not a good rating. So the sometimes don’t say it or just say it’s certified without specifics. Motoport gets a lot of good reviews and I owned one but the manufacturer won’t certify anything because he doesn’t have to since he’s US based. So I’ve really no idea if it’s any good. Better than polyester mesh but not as good as leather. I personally have a base layer (bull-it’s covec airflow suit) which was tested to 6 seconds on the old standard. It’s a compression suit so it keeps my armour close to my body. I layer over that. It flows a ton of air and stays comfortable in the tropical summer. I’m wear it daily in southern Vietnam.

It rains so rarely I've almost never used it, Andy. But it's still perfectly waterproof after eight years and all the user reviews I could find backed this up. But I don't think it's that breathable, the arms definitely get sweaty with the inner liner in hot weather.

Good review of this brand of jacket. Like you in a warmer QLD climate, I have been using a cheaper chinese branded vented jacket my mate gave me, (he now has the dri rider vented version now, and would like to see how they compare?). The dri rider I have is a lot older and only has the vented zip reliefs, and a better all weather jacket, but not cool at all in summer.
@crosstrainingadventure
@crosstrainingadventure 4 жыл бұрын
i agree roger, at some point it gets too hot for even a well vented jacket and the best option is mesh. but then you have the issue of how well it will cope with a slide along the road. someone did mention a kevlar reinforced mesh jacket that is rated even better than thick leather but apparently it costs 50% more again than mine. ouch.

What's your opinion regarding gear with built in armour, and wearing body armour separately to jackets etc? The advantage of separate seems to be that on impact the dedicated armour is less likely to have moved around. But then again, I kind of like keeping life simple and having all-in-one approach.

I’d like Motocap to test this jacket. I don’t think it would do very well. Motocap tested Klim’s badlands pro which was mediocre despite having much more robust materials. Mesh is definitely a huge trade off in protection for comfort. I think the induction is decent for off road but I wouldn’t rely on it for substantial road tours at brisk speeds.
@crosstrainingadventure
@crosstrainingadventure 4 жыл бұрын
I agree Martin, I would want something stronger for a lot of road work. But most of our adventure riding is on dirt and rarely at speed.... given the AA rating under the European prEN 17092-3 standard I feel confident with this gear. I haven't looked into this enough to see how rigorous the EU testing regime is though. I know our current research into helmets is showing that some of the expensive brands like Leatt, Airoh and Suomy have used inferior metals that can rust quickly and lead to strap failure, despite supposedly complying with the relevant standards. I think after an initial assessment they are allowed to just monitor themselves which can be a recipe for disaster.

@crosstrainingadventure I am. Bought a used 2022.. with a whole 85 miles on it.. and some mods, including a Rekluse. All unlocked too.. for 16,000 US. This is a beast... pretty much as capable offroad as my 690 was, just obviously heavier.. but relatively easy to pick up. I will be ditching the rekluse, always didn't like them in theory, now that is validated when I had one. I absolutely detest the fact you can't just leave the bike in gear when off and have it not roll.. also using the method of turning the bike off and using the clutch to engage the rear wheel is not happening. My clutch control is just fine, and I don't like this Rekluse at all. Other then that, the cruise control is so sweet and the quickshifter is just insanely cool... and FAST .

I tumbled about 10m on pavement in this jacket and still managed to wear a hole clean through the back of my shoulder. The main shell of the jacket is quite thin and I can tear it with my bare hands. I'm considering the Baja S4 for my next jacket instead.
@crosstrainingadventure
@crosstrainingadventure 3 жыл бұрын
This is what concerns me. I know they've rated the material as being abrasion-resistant but bitumen is very nasty stuff. I once skidded down the road at only 70kmh and that was enough to wear a hole through a pair of proper racing leathers.... so even a good textile isn't going to hold up well.
