For sure. I have read that they were top of the line. Runs nice too. I'm looking forward to running it more.

In my opinion these are the best shapers ever made. German quality at it's best. (no, i'm not German) The black spots left on the finished surface could be scratches left from the last heavy cut. I have always better results if i do two finishing passes with lots of cutting oil.
@precisionmachineshed4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it does seem to run nice. I haven't messed with it much other than with this plate. I need to go through it and check all the clearances for play. I did have to take a few thou play out of the ram gibb. I have to check the table gibbs yet. While it was a fairly decent finish, I was getting a very thin wave pattern in there. I might try some different material too as well as choking up the vise on the box. This model doesn't have the leg, so i'm sure I'm getting flex to some degree with those heavier cuts. I can't remember, what make is yours. I've watched quite a few of your shaper videos.

I too follow Michel now since toolfest2021 and watch every one of Harolds ARW discussions on Sunday. Michel brings a lot to every discussion he is in. Strange how we all meet and make new friends over YT..Bear in Tx.

Michel, on the way this Sat morning (Nov 27 2021) to look at a 450,,,Haven't slept much since finding it early Thanksgiving morning, and 20 mins away. If it, and most likely it will, ends up in our shop, will do a whole series on restoration. Cheers from TX,,Bear.

Another beautiful BIG old space eating machine you don't need! You'd get more use out of a nice little brown and sharpe surface grinder.

Dont forget to tilt your clapper box. Your tool was probably dragging on the return stroke which effected your finish.
@precisionmachineshed4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I kept track of that and there wasn't enough pressure to cause that. Rustinox mentioned it could be left over tear out from the roughing pass. I think that may be likely. I am going to try to run a few other types of materials under it and see what I can get. You have a nice shaper by the way.

Cool machine id be interested what kind of tolerances you can keep when you get it running......nice surface finishbitd be cool to see your tool grind too
@precisionmachineshed4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I might flip the plate and cut it and see what it has done. I should have used a shear tool for the final pass, but I just sharpened up the edge from the first pass. I can show it later, but just a fairly basic cut with small relief angles and a small radius on the front cutting edge. I know the vise is mounted near the edge of the box and this model doesn't have a box support leg. I'm sure I'm getting a little flex on the heavy cuts.

I buy one yesterday. How you lubricate? Oil or vaseline? Can you change travel distance?
@precisionmachineshed3 жыл бұрын
Oil. They have a crank of the control side that adjusts stroke length and the crank on the back of the arm adjusts the ram within the stroke.
@matsandersen784 жыл бұрын
Hi! Thanks for yor video:-) I have a similar, but 375 stroke machine. 2 questions. Did you manage to remove the ram? Secondly, lubrication. Mine also drenched in grease. Ways are in horrible shape. I cannot see why way oil would not be a much better lubrication? Any thoughts?
@precisionmachineshed4 жыл бұрын
I did not remove my ram. I did drench it and oil and ran it back and forth several times by hand before turing the machine on to make sure there was at least oil in there. I then ran it slow and stopped the ram at the extreme end of each stroke. Then wiped out as much as possible. Much more time and oil intense process, but I got a vast majority of the old grease out. The ram can be removed, but other than the ram, there wasn't much grease left anywhere else. I did remove the gearbox and cleaned the grease from it. They are suppose to run on oil, so I've been using a good way oil which has been working good. I did notice my ram loosened up when I started using the oil, so I had to adjust the gib.

@@precisionmachineshed thanks man, ill let you know about progress here once I get ram off...good to hear about the way oil working good.

ram comes off after removing the huge pin at the base of the machine. It make the collumns inside fall down and make the rame to slide off
