Hi Glenn, Greetings from Tanzania. Just done this mod, after watching your video. Only thing I didn't do was drill the slide compensator hole out to 3mm (only saw it after I'd read the comments argghhh, next time I take the tank off I'll do it). Just been and tried it and I must say the pick-up is now pretty impressive. Thanks for the tutorial. BTW, on my South African spec KLR the snorkel is only about 10cm long, it just goes into the air box and stops, not all convoluted like your spec bike. Cheers and keep it sunny side up :)

the answer is simple the audio quality was so poor I could only understand him when he spoke up and I had my volume way up ! and he didn't do anything to the main jet just taking it apart and putting it back together is nothing accomplished... did you see any brass shavings at all ? and to mutilate the air box like that is plane silly. Normally I love modification videos but this was too basic to bother with... cut the spring so throttle response will be faster ? come on ! ...what about the hole enlarging in the slide ? and changing the taper of the needle ... and his voodoo adjustment of the air screw is still confusing to me.... you adjust the air screw to fastest idle, period. what was all the other crap ? in time I expect him to do better but this video wasn't so great.

Well done, Glenno! I got my 2008 used with a dirty carby. Cleaning helped but doing these mods put a big smile on my face. Thanks! Noticed other videos for shimming needle and drilling slide hole. Would you recommend these mods in addition to clipping the spring and drilling the main jet? Thanks again!

Yo Glenno I have my stock carb tuned in as good as it gets a KLX adjustable needle helps big time, I also did the spring and jetting sure it hurt MPG but it has that free revving feeling 75 mph cruise is effortless now Iridium plug helped more than you will believe I drilled a few 1 inch holes I decided not to cut it open Lexx pipe and stainless header also on top of the big weight savings from new exhaust a lithium battery saves pounds . Pirelli MT 43 trials tire up front , wish there was a full trials tire for a 17 inch rim these are awesome tires.

I use a 1.6mm drill bit on main jet, 45 air jet, 3 1/2 coils off slide spring, 2 7/64 holes in the slide, and 2 #4 lock washers under the needle, and I grind/taper the stock needle from the tip, half way up the needle. And of course L mod, and slip on.

Hi Glenn, I took my carby apart and found out a previous owner put in a JD Jet kit with a 165 main and drilled the slide. I am not impressed with the power. The bike has a Lexx exhaust and I am going to put on an FMF power bomb header. Do you think it would help if I cut 4 rungs off the slide spring like you recommend in your video or should I not do that because it has the JD Jet kit in it? Thank you.

Mike Cunningham .... sorry for late reply... I didn't receive any notifications... 165main sounds too big... I got best results between 153-155 main... maybe u loose power through too much fuel.... Cutting the spring will only help with throttle response.... won't give power

The best mods are a KLX needle a metal choke fitting change all carb screws to stainless allen head screws trust me, re jet accordingly to foam filter airbox mods and better flowing pipe just this alone and my 1 gen will pull away from my buds 2012 model easily. The Lexx pipe and a lithium ion battery saves almost 10 lbs I removed the bulky chain guide, went to smaller LED blinkers Aluminum bars Now Im installing aluminum hubs and new wheels costly but I like this bike Also Im trying an aluminum radiator, not sure how much lighter yet. Id like to find a titanium bolt and screw kit and change all that out.

Hi there - and thanks for the video. I bought a Kawa KL650 Tengai, 1991 model with 58.000 km on it. Everything is stock on this bike except the muffler which is SuperTrapp 813 slip-on. There is 7 discs. I have not opened the carb yet, so I don't know if the jettings is stock. But if I do your mods, do I have to replace/add discs on the muffler? Greetings from way up north in Norway (and we are talking way up... 🙂)

@glennosgarage1307

The snorkel was the first thing to be removed when I modded the stock carby... It's just an air restrictor.... but without the snorkel and or cutting holes in airbox you'll just be cleaning your air filter more often.(a small price to pay)

Glenno's Garage Aussie klrs have two holes on slide I think, at least what I found is that European models don't have and only Aussie models have two holes which limits the bike. Either way buying new Harley Davidson slide or filling those holes fix it? Lastly, with stock carby, range is about 360 kms on highway. If I do it the way you showed, what would be range in your experience?
@glennosgarage1307
@glennosgarage1307 6 жыл бұрын
D. F. ... no it doesn't limit the bike... if you have 1 hole in slide then run a 3mm drill bit through it to make it bigger and the slide will come up quicker making it more responsive when you throttle on...

I added a dislike to this video for 2 reasons.... One you did absolutely NOTHING to that main jet perhaps I misunderstood that you pre drilled it out earlier or something but in the video you did nothing at all to that thing. I have drilled out main jets in my time when I couldn't afford to buy one and if you don't have a tiny drill bit the size you need check the cutting torch tip cleaner assortment for the right size. I found one that the end would fit in the hole but the file section wouldn't so I worked it till it did the results were a size bigger as a result... and it worked great. two. cutting the air box like that is totally unnecessary... 3# 2" HOLES WITH A HOLE SAW IS MORE THAN ENOUGH ! even one would probably be adequate. but the way you did it looses all of the box rigidity .... totally a Bad idea ! Riding the KLR like a crotch rocket is not a good idea as you found out .. the tires ment for dirt are not very good for side wall adhesion to the pavement.... yes you can ride, and have no fear.... but perhaps it is a sign of stupidity, not bravido eh ? spending weeks in the hospital or laid up for a quick fun ride is just not smart ! Cool it Bro !
@glennosgarage1307
@glennosgarage1307 4 жыл бұрын
Of course the jet was predrilled...the cv carby was sitting on the shelf not in use due to having the Mikuni fitted... all you have to do for extra air is take snorkel out of air box... the Mikuni needs the air box cut... rigidity is not an issue and never has been.. you underestimate the strength of plastic.. Personally I don't like to drill jets but there are plenty of people on a budget that have used this mod and love it... I prefer the mikuni mod but I don't mind throwing $$$ at a bike to make it more usable and fun.. Get it right.. I was riding KLR like a supermoto not a crotch rocket... they are actually 2 different types of bikes and riding styles just so you know.. Yes.. I know the limits of the KLR on road and off road..so staying in the limits of the bike I've had no issues but sometimes it takes a little drop to know where your or your bikes limits are... Thanks for your concern but I ride in my fun zone and will continue as I have done for well over 30yrs... Stay safe BRO...

@@glennosgarage1307 Ahh ! OK I don't own a KLR though I would like to... I only have a 30" inseam and that is a major factor when I insist on having my feet flat on the ground ! does your bike get the wheel off the ground when just accelerating ? that is a major improvement I must admit ! I don't know anyone that likes to drill main jets but when the money isn't there you do what you must ! you might drill out the hole in the slide that applies suction to the diaphragm so you get faster throttle response.... and don't forget the doo-hicky ! (cam chain tensioner) and rear sub frame through bolt you obviously ride it hard ... GOOD ! enjoy it while you can ( I'll change my dislike to a like ! keep after it !) the airscrew only really affects the engine at idle and slightly above but it makes a world of difference on acceleration adjust it to where the engine runs the best not a set number of turns out. because each engine is different! .... and you can squeeze just a bit more performance out of that thing !
