I worked at Kmart #3163 (Burnsville, Minnesota) during high school. The annual employees' "Family Picnic" was not to be missed! Tons of food and kegs of beer, all provided by the company. Yeah, 90% of us were underage, but nobody cared. This was the early 1980s. A completely different time in America.

I worked part time at Kmart while attending college from 1973 to 1978. It was a great company to work for. I loved my job there. So sad Kmart is gone. It truly was a magical store!

I remember on up the hill my late Mother use worked at back then. In early1990s.to2000s Regular Kmart store and Big Kmart store Super Kmart Store. We’re place got my school supplies and clothes items . Back 192/1973/1974. I miss The Blue Light special. My favorite was Easter shopping and Christmas shopping. Miss Layway

Kmart isn't just some stupid store closing. This was childhood. Meals in the cafeteria. It's where you got your school clothes, TV's, fishing stuff, basically anything you couldn't get at Kroger's, you got at Kmart. Eddie Lampert ran it into the ground. Only 12 open as of this post. 10 after March '22. That will only leave 4 in the continental US. Rest are in territories. Only 25 Sears as of this post as well.

We used to have a Big K store down on Rodney Parham in Little Rock next to where Safeway (later replaced as Chuck E. Cheese’s) used to be in the 70s until it closed down in 2017 and now it’s serves as a Premier Medical Plaza 😢.

I remember a heavy-set lady who used to slice ham in the store snack bar. As she'd slide the cutter back and forth, her hefty, rubbery upper arm would swing back and forth with each cutter stroke. As a little kid, I found it interesting to compare her arm to the ham itself.

Well it's the end of an era for Kmart. Here's the new jingle that I came up with. Planning plans life was good we came and filled our cup we got satisfaction even more at Kmart that was our Value Store. Kmart was our Value Store where are dollar bought us more they gave our dreams a helping hand at Kmart stores they understood. yep they understood right until Eddie Lampert came and took over and he didn't understand anything that the old Kmart understood back in the day. rip Kmart you will definitely be missed but it's an end of an era people don't want to shop at Kmart anymore they rather shop at Walmart or other places can't wait to see what you become in Mattydale New York as you already became a your storage place in Liverpool New York and I no longer shop in your old building

SSKresge- Kmart was a wonderful store to grow up in. My late parents did a lot of shopping there. Household goods, Pet Supplies...Play clothes....the list goes on. We visited a Kmart every Saturday. They seemed to be everywhere....and now they are all gone!!! Such a shame. Walmart* dosen't even compare...and their stuff is all crap!!! Kmart had such good quality merchandise. What went wrong?

Our Kmart had a smoking room inside kind of like a break room for chain smokers. I remember notiicing The ceiling tiles weren't white but brown. Ashe trays full of cigarette butts. LOL

Shopping at Kmart was an EXPERIENCE. There WERE other discount "marts" then too, but NONE were like Kmart. The idea behind Kmart was to KEEP you in the store as long as possible (The Cafe, Blue Light Special, many had video games, later Little Cesar's pizza, etc) No one WANTS to STAY at Wally*World. Hell, I'd rather shop at 7-11 than at a Wally's.

My husband worked at the Kmart Warehouse for over 30 years..they were excellent with health insurance every until the first bankruptcy in 2001 .. with the Connolly guy that ripped off kmart in the 90s ..we had to deal with Lampard.. he was fair at times but..he's a land owner..he bought Sears what was good at the time he said he would improve everything bring kmart/ sears to their glory! No he didn't..he was a fool! He's only land onder who did nothing to improve his stores! He only sold out his stores! Never did anything to improve on things ..a lame lame attempt with Roderunner to compete with Amazon Walmart it sucked!! Then the 2nd bankruptcy in 19! All the stores closing!! So sad ! Should go back in in the 90s Kmart! was good. my husband was making gangbuster money on overtime..I rather shop at Kamrt then Walmart because back in the day kmart respected the worker ..my husband moved on but we are sad to see how the business went ..Kmart took care of us for many years

That 1960's "Big K" in the video at 0:55 was a completely separate chain and not related to Kmart at all. Big Kmart didn't come along for the Kmart we all know until the late 1990's.

Nope, but a common mistake. The "Big Kmart" thing was not introduced until the late 1990's. This is Kuhn's Big K department store. Kmart and Big K were actually both introduced in 1962, although Big K's heyday was through the late 1960's to the early 1970's. The k mart in gilford nh was always a dump.it really went downhill steadily after it took over for bankrupt wt grant.the landlord seemingly did nothing.leaky roof and a very unkempt covered walkway in front of the store among other faults.certainly lowered people's impression of the place.
