I am pretty sure this is a ground up Kmart-- the facade that matches the 1962-1970 design is a strong indication. It opened in 1968 as a Kmart.

My first job (other than a couple of paper route's) was at that Kmart when I was in High School. Goodbye first employer. Times are changing.

Early 1980? I would have sworn it was K-Mart earlier than that. I'm almost positive I was there numerous times in the 70's and it was a K-Mart.

This has the 4000 prototype design from the late-60's/early-70's, including the original rectangular sign, and awning. Compare it to this one who was always a Kmart from the opening, and you'll see this was neither a Grants, nor from 1980: kzbin.info/www/bejne/imq7gYZjp6aJgLc

From what I heard prior to it being a Kmart, it was a W.T. Grants before that chain had its fate nearly identical to Sears/Kmart and now walmart isn't to far off either.

This was one of Oldest Kmarts ever built in Chicagoland before all the ones built inside Chicago limits

This location at the time definitely had a face lift prior to its closure, just wondering where all the pharmacy customers went to since obviously the pharmacy closed up?

Ah, Grant's. So that was the store that predated this Kmart, since the exterior made me think there was another store here besides Kmart(and before my time, since I was born in '82, and am familiar w/Kmart store designs of the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, and Super Kmart store designs) decades ago. Another great vid, from you.

The last action i saw once closed was a children's toy charity event renting the old store, but no demo is taking place any time soon.

In the late 1980's I worked at Belford Electronics in Addison and went to DeVry Institute of Technology, then in Lombard. This Kmart was along the way and I stopped there sometimes. Even then it looked rather quaint and old fashioned. I remember two young female store clerks hearing the news about then-mayor Harold Washington having his heart attack. One giggled and said, "Hope he dies."

I was in that store when it was a Kmart in 1978. They could've done something with that store, given its location, but the parent company just gave up on it a long, long time ago. Sad.

Well in a ironic twist it turns out Kroger ended up buying the property knocked it down and now it's a Mariano's with a gas station!

And yet they opened a newer store in neighboring Elmhurst and now that store is out of business. I think that this going to be the last year Sears/Kmart will be in operation. Glad I will shop at meijer.

Close them all. It's like a flash back to goldblatts from mid 70s at every Kmart I walk into. Chain never adapted to changing times after 1980.
