It is absolutely great to see a perfectly good building repurposed instead of rotting away and or being vandalized and stripped and scraped I like the old school round vents better

Their is a cool former Kmart in West Palm Beach Florida that's now a Sears outlet store but still looks like Kmart from the 70s inside . Even smells old

My local Kmart turned into a furniture store years ago. The one in Oak Ridge Tn has part of it turning into a Planet Fitness.

The only thing I don't like is that some of these U-Haul takeovers didn't have abandoned Kmart's prior, some were still operational that U-Haul bought, then kicked Kmart out. WallieB26 even showed one where they did that, the Kmart's building was sold, and U-Haul kicked them out.

Yes it's true under Eddies Lamberts watch Sears Holdings sold a ton of high performing Kmart & Sears locations suposedly to keep the company afloat. Where I live the Kmart was busy and a Walmart opened. Both stayed busy for a while and everyone started going to Walmart. Fortunately for Kmart the Walmart store closed and relocated as a Super Walmart elsewhere and now the empty Walmart has been bought by U-Haul. In Zion, IL the Kmart's business declined badly and they closed. I was told by the Pharmacist that the store was leased and if the company owned the building and land those would be the last to close. That Kmart became a self storage under a different company besides U-Haul.

I live right next to this building so here is the story, kind of a sad one really. Uhaul bought this facility as well as the old Kroger building right next door to it. They had outlined plans to make it an indoor storage facility for customers needing storage lockers/buildings. The city of Versailles approved these plans and said come on in, please buy it! As soon as they bought it, the city of Versailles then said it was not properly zoned for indoor storage facilities. Now they have these 2 massive empty buildings with nothing to do with them. 7 million dollars flushed down the drain. Versailles will not rezone the property to make it storage facilities because it will put the already existing, rundown, garbage, always getting broken into, storage facility in versailles out of business. So this is yet another example of how local governments screw business owners out of money. Tell them they can do what they want, have them spend all this money in the city, refuse to rezone so they can keep their buddies in business, campaign that "growth destroys bluegrass" and growth is bad for small communities, and still be able to say that they aren't letting old buildings sit empty in the community. The city of Versailles really screwed uhaul and it's citizens out of a good deal. All because the government is corrupt. Surprise.

So weird to see a completely hollowed-out Kmart, knowing it used to be packed with clothes and people.
