For the amount of work you put in over such a small amount of time/bucket load, a find like that here in Wales would be considered a paystreak! Nice one :)

+Dave D One thing to bear in mind is that in Devon we never find pickers or nuggets. The gold is generally small and flakey, so not much weight. Put it this way - I've been panning on that river for many years, and I've only just got 0.5g in weight!

The Kester Brook near there has previously reported as having gold, found when it was cleared for tin some years ago. Not sure how much is left. The South Hams area, many of the rivers and streams near Modbury and Avonwick have small amounts of gold.

There are a couple of parking places further towards Buckfast, near the weir. One is a layby next to the river and another right next to the wier itself.

Great video, any tips for the rules of panning and general advice for a novice?
@kmoorman20087 жыл бұрын
The key consideration is that gold is considerably denser than water and it's almost twice as dense as lead. Therefore, the heavier minerals, and especially the Gold will readily sink the the bottom of a pan if given the right conditions. So, my first tip is this. When you have likely gold bearing gravels etc in your pan the very first and most important thing you need to do is to immerse the pan in the water and agitate the material vigorously for a good 20-30 seconds to allow the different materials to stratify. This allows lighter rock / sand / gravel to rise to the top and heavier, iron based minerals, gold, lead etc to sink to the bottom of the pan. Once you done this you can then wash off the surface material. If you have a lot of 'black sands' in your location, which will be a mix of haematite, magnetite and other ferrous minerals you will see clearly when you need to reset (re-stratify) as the black sands will start to show on the surface. The process is simply put a repeat of these steps, but as you get down to a smaller amount of material you need to take more care, as heavier stuff will sometimes 'collect' gold with it, as their closer in density. It's a lot easier to show this in a video.... I'll post a link to a good one kzbin.info/www/bejne/kHSvZ3mBhr-spa8

Ebay is a reasonable starting place, or try Googling Gold Pans UK - like www.google.com/search?q=gold+pans+uk&rlz=1C1CHWA_enGB611GB612&oq=gold+pans+uk&aqs=chrome..69i57j0l3.2518j0j8

Maybe it's me but i literally couldn't find any decent tucked away streams lol found streams right on the moorland surrounded in animals and roads (not good) a river that i nearly fell in and i was the phone holder due to zippy pockets (plus it was deep and fast following,the main river near spichwick. Any tips for finding the small more shallow streams?
@kmoorman20086 жыл бұрын
I have to admit I've never had any luck up on Dartmoor itself, I find the river too 'big' up there, with massive pools and not a lot of gravely material to work with. I've had more luck on streams around the periphery of the moor, either to the south towards Buckfast or down towards Modbury on the streams and rivers there, or to the North around Hatherleigh and Exbourne.

Kieron Moorman i did try yesterday around Hembury right next to buckfast but couldn't find any streams, just deep rivers lol

+Pierre Malle Miche de Malleray There are a couple of guys on the UK Gold Panning Association who make them. See here ukgpa.com/forum/index.php Yann, who lives in France, and is also on KZbin also makes them I believe, as a member of the Association kzbin.infovideos If you register for the UKGPA at www.ukgpa.com there are a number of threads on the super sluice, such as this one: ukgpa.com/forum/viewthread.php?thread_id=10 As a member of the Association you get 10% off any purchase.

@@kmoorman2008 Be careful of Wales, Natural Resource Wales is in the process of taking two gentleman to court over damage to the river banks on the Mawdacch. The Afon Wen is an area of SSSI which means it's hella protected. The police have been known to move people on too. Wales IS good for gold, but probably not worth it. Might be better to stick to the lesser known areas in the UK.

@kmoorman20087 жыл бұрын
Led Dennis This particular river is one I've been to before, but in general there is literature covering Devon and Cornwall (Gold in the Counties of Devon and Cornwall bu Simon Camm) plus a few British Geological Survey Mineral Reports. Both provide details of areas and specific streams that have been found to contain gold. I've found gold in a number of streams in the region
@kmoorman20087 жыл бұрын
Plus of course I do go on prospecting trips in the true sense, trying out rivers and streams in the region that might contain gold.

Good video. I went panning in Devon last March. Found one flake as good as yours and a few smaller bits for a full days work. I didn't have a sluice at the time else I'm sure I could have done better. I took a trip to Tyndrum two weeks ago and found some nice specimens, great fun. The concentrates in Devon are much stickier and harder to pan in than in Scotland.
@kmoorman20087 жыл бұрын
Morning Curt. Scotland and Wales will always produce more and better gold than SW England. I've not been to Tyndrum myself, but i've panned some concentrates from there (I published a short video of it a while back) and the gold was lovely. Congrats on getting some Devon gold, btw. It's not easy to find!

Brilliant video i really enjoyed it . The gold you found is stunning an boy id like some like that for my collection. i never knew Devon was a gold area but now as i say that i think i do recall reading it some where . devito501 There is Gold In a number of streams and rivers in Devon and Cornwall. However nothing in any great quantity. For me it's more about finding it rather than the amount though.
@devito5018 жыл бұрын
yeah your spot on there bud if found gold in rivers or streams you would never think about looking at . tbh i think there is gold injust about every river in the uk
@kmoorman20088 жыл бұрын
The problem with most rivers is the depth of sediment. Even gold bearing rivers, when they slow down develop deep light sediment and you won't find gold in that. Also, much of the UK doesn't have the correct geology, or geological history to have gold present. The gold in Devon is from volcanism, metamorphism associated with the granite implacement or later enrichment due to minerals rich superheated water. Much of the UK hasn't had that, although some places possibly has glacial deposits that may contain gold from further north.
@devito5018 жыл бұрын
yes i was meaning to add glacial deposits . im currently working in whats called the thornhill basin which is showing lots of promise . have you got email or facebook would be nice to chat with you more .
