Thousands of St. Louis area buildings sit vacant. It's going to take a lot to change that.

St Louis should help homeowners willing to preserve these properties. It takes a fortune for these homes to become habitable. Great work Kaleb.

It’s also the scale of the project. I own a 125 year old house in Hamilton Heights. I’m literally one block away from the West End and 10 blocks away from the Central West End. Those two neighborhoods are full of ongoing rehabs. Hamilton Heights is not and it’s hard to get companies to actually work on my property because of the scale of the projects. My house hasn’t been altered since 1908 so I often times need full replacements or all new systems added and companies will tell me this will be a cool house when it’s done or this is such a cool project and then proceeded to tell me they can’t help either because of the scale of the project or they don’t want to do business in that area out of fear of stolen supplies. I understand that last part, especially coming from a company but I also feel like they look at the neighborhood and don’t see any more renovations going on and and say nope, even though 2 streets over, hundreds of renovating are going on. It’s hard to get loans, hard to find workers, and hard to fix some problems because everything is so old and people aren’t taught how to fix these older buildings. A lot of people just want to rip out all of the old and replace it with new stuff even though it won’t work with your old building and may hurt it in the long run.

Sounds like you've been on quite the journey. I feel your pain and hear your passion. It's hard to understand people who want to destroy and not preserve, especially when history has shown us what eyesores the master craftsmen's beautifully-stunning work were replaced with. Despite the heartaches, I enjoyed hearing about your home. Thanks for sharing a part of your journey with the rest of us subscribers. Take heart.

@@twistoffate4791 it has been a journey but I haven’t given up because this house belonged to my late father and before him, my grandparents. It’s been empty for 8 years but I’m trying to bring life back to it and its neighborhood.

@@tylerbhumphries Wow! That's quite a history! It is crystal clear to me why you would fight to get the home ready for the future. Most people do not have that honor, and therefore they will never know the grave responsibility.

Caleb and Kim, this is so encouraging to watch. You are a pioneer in the rehabilitation of your city with its fascinating history. It gladdens my heart to think that you are not alone in your endeavours and that you are playing such a huge part in the gradual restoration of the city's elegant buildings. Love and admiration to you both from Australia.

City should focus on areas and then move outward. This would create zones of gentrified areas increasing more potential restorations.
@sekhmara85902 жыл бұрын
Gentrification is really bad.

@@sekhmara8590 There are differing ways to interpret the word, but upgrading of an area is far preferable to its complete demolition and destruction.

The free market is to blame for America's degenerate decline 😒
@patmccrady60632 жыл бұрын
The free market is what allows Kaleb to restore his home. The “degenerate decline” is due to progressive policy on crime.
@dcan9112 жыл бұрын
@@patmccrady6063 no, it's due to offshoring of jobs and wage stagnation over a 40 year period. America's policy on crime is not progressive.
