I had the honor of meeting Geronimo Pratt and his wife Ashaki (sp) in 1997 after his release. My uncle helped finance the legal fees and bought a billboard in LA, and even bought him a car to help him get on his feet. They drove out to Laguna Beach, and my aunt and I made him an enchilada dinner at his request. I played my most embarrassing game of chess with him. He was a great story teller with an unbreakable spirit. He and my uncle became great friends, and my uncle would visit him often in Louisiana where Geronimo introduced him to fishing.

There is footage of Geronimo and his comrades having a 30 minute shootout with LAPD. Geronimo was former military and knew logistics. He refused to let one brother die and after 30 minutes of shooting at LAPD not one Blackman died during the standoff. He told them the only way they were coming out is if the news media was there to record so that it could be documented if they tried to “Fred Hampton” them. A real true revolutionary RIP G. Pratt. I read Pratt’s autobiography and it was excellent. Johnny Cochran said “he’ll retire from law only after brother Pratt is free” I believe he did just that too!

I met Geronimo Pratt when he first got out of jail after doing some time. He came to my University and it was initiated by the Asian Student Union. I was impressed that they had commissioned him to come, and he was a very intelligent man.
