@@BrianJConnolly That is really nice to hear! I’ve always loved nylon and sometimes get the “stink eye” from classical guys as my technique is not traditional “P-I-M-A”. I did study for a while but later went back to my own barbaric right hand. I also play electric but most of my gigs are nylon these days. All the best to you my friend!

@@MatGurman , this might seems like a strange question, but if I wanted to get one of my classical guitars to sound more like a steel string, what type of strings would you suggest? Maybe carbon or titanium?

@@BrianJConnolly neither of those would have that effect Brian. The main difference you would notice is in the string tension. I’ve used both and they sound like nylon. The best route imo would be through EQ and perhaps the use of an IR from an out board pre like the Fishman Aura Spectrum or Zoom AX1. Those will nudge you into the sound of another instrument but it will be subtle. One thing I have messed with is, if you have a small body steel string (GS Mini, Martin 000, etc), try silk and steel. They get a very warm almost nylon sound on a steel string and I really like it. Unfortunately, you can’t put those in a nylon though. Just FYI, the carbon is much higher tension than the titanium strings. They still sound like traditional nylon to me but really punchy.

Trevor Coleman Your welcome Trevor. I’m glad you found it helpful. I think it’s the most natural sounding passive nylon pickup I have heard. It’s really warm sounding and has a lot of the advantages of an undersaddle without the drilling. The output is hot also.

ibendiben Thank you. That is a nylon string parlor made by “Art and Lutherie” which is made and distributed by Godin (the parent company). It’s about the size of a 3/4. You might want to check out Kremona who makes a student size that is roughly like a parlor. 🎶

Not required but always wise for tone sculpting. Piezo passive pickups put out pleanty of signal but are not line level so sn ratio gets better with an external pre. Having a few bands of eq is also helpful. This demo did not use external pre .

fordilavofgad I mostly play Nylon these days , never been very much into playing steel strings except on electrics. Although I am aware of “proper” technique and went to a music conservatory with some very well respected Classical players, I reverted back to my own self taught technique because I have better facility with it after using it for more than 50 years. I might mention that the greatest innovations in every discipline come from the people who color outside the lines. It is that individuality which propels every art and science. I think there is plenty of room for individuality in every discipline.

fordilavfgad+ I feel bad for you,that you have some sort of "rules" to how you play guitar. I love switching from my Steel string to my Nylon Classical guitar,although I think it would send you over the edge,how DARE I play blues,rock,country,funk,etc. music on a classical guitar !?

U.S. SAM Thanks for that US Sam. Jimmy Smith (the guitarist) used to call me “Funky Nylon” when I was a kid. I really get into every style with equal enthusiasm and as long as my intention comes across, my technique is getting the job done. Some people get hung up on the “accent” when listening to others speak- that’s sad because the message never gets heard. It’s all good.
