I read in a book by an American indian that many stone breakers were men with a disability like a club foot, and often they would be taken under the wing of an older stone breaker and learn the craft as boys. A good stone breaker was in great demand so even with a deformity a man could gain great status.

Don, I just got intrigued with knapping and had received a “starter kit” with copper tools when I came across your site. I’ve watched several vids to start my knapping education. I’m quite impressed with your knowledge & presentations of guidance; learned a LOT from watching several of your vids. Thank you! I plan on heading down to a nearby creek to search now for stone tools & knap-stones. Wish me luck! I’ll catch many more of your vids. yup. Got lots of those turtles... they are sitting in a box, looking at me, waiting for the end of time...but now I will make them pay. They will all be arrowheads, atlatl heads or small knife blades in no time.

Great video! I’m in NE Louisiana and spend most of my time napping chert gravel, some of it really small stuff. It’s usually turtle-backed to some degree. Your approach is great for big pieces and pieces the size of a thumb. Love all your videos, please keep it up.

what is the most facinating to me is he only hits once to get a flake. i just started out and im doing so much more hitting to get way less mass and pretty muchs shrinking the apoint to an unusable rock. a master of the trade for sure!

I'm not a knapper, but I've always been fascinated by it. I have a friend/mentor that flintknaps. He heat treats his stones, I noticed it would drastically alter colors of some stones. Like... blue coastal flint would turn a brown, almost amber color. Is there any historic evidence they heat treated stone before shaping? Does it change the property of the stone other than color and affect how easy it is to work?

Stones in water break different..heating tends to embrittled the stone...indians had campfires .. heat treating is 60% magic 37% science .2% larceny and arson .

The folks I learned from call it a turtle back when you are working on something like a biface and a bump or mound is on one side from bad flakes or flakes that break before they run their course. These are the biggest problem for me because when a flake snaps, it leaves no ridges or platforms that I can easily use to take off the turtle back without seriously taking the edge down and making the piece a whole lot smaller. Any advice?

I have access to 50+ pounds of Oregon obsidian, that being said what is the easiest material for a beginner to work? I have access to hundreds of pounds of Jasper and various forms of agate as well. No flint or chert or anything locally though.

Guide the shockwave. Move the center mass up and be ready to hit it really hard. Understand that no matter what you do it's going to end up smaller than before.
