When the weather is good the British Isles are as beautiful as anywhere with a diverse scenery of mountains and vales and lively shops and night life in a relative short space. But they’re green for a reason (hence the name Emerald Isle?).

I've been to Knaresborough myself - I have relatives who live in Leeds. The composer Grant Kirkhope (perhaps best known for composing the soundtracks to various Rareware games for the Nintendo 64) grew up in the town.

The historic church near the rail station is worth a visit. The cave she talks about is probably Mother Shipton’s. Nice town with some quaint shops and cafes and a good place for a pint or two.
@Wanderlauren4 жыл бұрын
Ooh thanks for the tip! Yep it was Mother Shiptons Cave! Knaresborough was definitely very quaint and pretty 😍
@dlittlester4 жыл бұрын
I think the church is St. Johns? The story I heard was that it was burned down with a lot of the rest of the town by Scots. The wife of one of the kings who was French (name escapes me at the moment) paid to have the church rebuilt. I was there in 2013 and 2014 and wanted to check it out, but both times it was closed for repairs. The last time they were installing a new heating system. The next time, I'll be demanding a visit!

It's my favourite town in England. The market got their charter in in the 1300s, but apparently there was a market there 100 years before that. King John's hunting grounds (one of them) stretched south and west to what's now Harrogate. The cave you mentioned was St Robert's. That's an interesting story including King John. Knaresborough was also the site of the first Maundy where the king, again John, gave out money to the poor, something that the monarch has done every year since, in different places. When Thomas Beckett was murdered, the knights who did the deed went north and hid in Knaresborough castle. There's so much history there, it's incredible for a Canadian like me to fully absorb.

@Wanderlauren4 жыл бұрын
haha no not very far at all!
@dlittlester4 жыл бұрын
No. Jump on the train, and when you get to Thirsk, either look for a local bus to take you into the town, past the race course, or have a quite long walk to get there. I stopped for a coffee at a cafe, and was the only customer there. He asked me if I was going to the Herriot museum. I said yes, and he said in a broad Yorkshire accent, "They're either comin' or goin' from there."
@girichandr4 жыл бұрын
@@dlittlester Yes, Thirsk (aka Darrowby in the books and television series). I think I might have gone past the Yorkshire Dales a long time ago (as part of a Contiki trip in 2004) but I didn't know about James Herriot back then. :) Will have to get back there and the two other places on my list - the Cotswolds and Cornwall coast.

@@Wanderlauren When I visited Knaresborough, I took the bus to Harrogate often. It's an interesting city for sure, and I enjoyed it there, but I like the fact that Knaresborough is so much older. Harrogate is also handy because the bus station and train station are next to each other. I took a bus from Harrogate to Pately Bridge las time I was there. Another great place to visit is Ripon. The cathedral there is not as big as York's, but it is absolutely beautiful. Next time, I want to get to Masham to visit the brewery where they make Old Peculier.
