That was pretty much coming to fruition. Rupert Murdoch did come up with what would be known as "the fourth network" in the country. It would be Fox, and the affiliate in Los Angeles is KTTV Fox 11, in case you missed it.

WGNX was sold to Meredith in 2000, who changed the call letters to WGCL; in 2021, Gray bought Meredith’s stations and WGCL is now WANF. The other Tribune stations mentioned in KNBC’s story are now Nexstar.

Weird that Group W/Westinghouse was interested in buying an independent station like KHJ Channel 9 (now KCAL). Group W/Westinghouse already owned network affiliates: NBC affiliates like KYW and WBZ; CBS stations like KDKA and KPIX; and one ABC affiliate like WJZ. But then again, Gannett Broadcasting (owning network affiliates) bought an independent in Boston called WLVI channel 56.

Wait a minute here, I thought GE owned RCA at the time that NBC was created or am I missing something here?

Group W wouldn't take over KHJ in the end. It eventually ended up in the hands of Disney, and now CBS.

Yes it is. It's the reason why all these channels are cookie cutter stuff
