Absolutely great! But don’t we expect that from you? I stop what I’m doing and watch every time I see a new video from you. Or an old one that’s new to me. I even watch older videos as a refresher. You have taught me soooo much!

NICE TIP WITH THE NAILS FOR MARKING TENONS. THIS COULD BE IMPROVED BY USING DRYWALL SCREWS INSTEAD. THEY ARE HARDER, WON'T MOVE BECAUSE THE HOLES IN THE WOOD WEAR AND CAN BE ADJUSTED BY SCREWDRIVERS. HOPE THIS HELPS SOMEONE.

Hi Colin, some great tips as usual. (Not sure about the two nails to mark a mortise, though - I think you'd get a straighter and more accurate mark if you took out your false teeth and dragged those over the wood...)

Very nice, Colin. One point (as I have learnt to my cost) - squares that are out by 1/16th over their length are actually a pain when building very large pieces, as the error is magnified over length!

I'm with you on the combination squares not being reliable. What brand of fixed square do you recommend?
@Ham68229
@Ham68229 4 жыл бұрын
Call me wrong if you wish but, on the sled, I've always used a #2 pencil with it's eraser to hold down the piece I'm cutting. It doesn't take a lot of pressure to hold the piece in place and since the blade is turning towards you, the blade is actually pulling the piece down on to the sled. Not going to add to the use of using wood screws in place of the nails for marking, that's just a very old trick. I will add for your alignment of squares, rather you're using a marking knife or pencil, put that down on your top line first then bring your square into that, then mark. You CAN make your square seem out of square by actually moving it first before remarking your line, it happens. A marking knife is really the best way to check anyway. Cheers :)

I love using toggle clamps I’m in the process of putting t track in my sled now for the toggle clamps actually. I like to use miter bolts. The rectangular nuts fit into the “type 30 chute” t track. The kind made for hex bolts n such. I just drill the holes out on the clamps so the bolt I wanna use will go right thru and into the rectangular miter bolt nuts.

About those toggles I think, I've got an idea on how to improve it. Look, you get that piece of plywood or whatever you use for base of those toggles, screw them on and then glue a vertical piece of wood to the front edge. That way you can just clamp it to your sled with some random clamp instead of gluing and it would be much easier to adjust.
@ibubezi7685
@ibubezi7685 4 жыл бұрын
Might work, but it is not 'fixed' on the bottom of the sled that way - only onto the edge - when you clamp them down, they might move (a bit)? I don't have a sled nor clamps - just wondering as you would have to make it pretty sturdy?

On combination squares there are usually two small tabs on the aluminium or iron casting either side of the locking bolt that the edge of the ruler presses against. These can be filed to make the square true.

Re paraffin wax: use waxed paper where one-molecule-thick application is desired. A small wad polishes surfaces like slides and machine tables/fences and never leaves excess that holds dust or interferes with finishes.

When checking your square, you could use a marking knife at the beginning to make a little "divot" for the pencil. Then you don't have to worry as much about getting the second line to start at the same spot, just drop the pencil in the same spot the knife made.

On the rubber for the clamps. That's great except I've discovered that the clamps will flex because of the rubber being too soft. It's great for clamping delicate work that doesn't require high clamping pressures.

Try isopropyl alcohol. Dab it all around the hot glue and give it a minute or two to wick underneath. It may not completely release, but it will often weaken it enough to be chiseled or scraped off without damaging the wood.

So what happens when u own a combo square that isn’t square? Garbage?
@inventivejester
@inventivejester 4 жыл бұрын
If you remove the ruler and look into the slot it rides in, you'll see two tiny bumps that the edge of the ruler runs on. If the combination square isn't quite true, then one of these bumps is too high. Figure out which one by which way the combo square deviates from a right angle. Work some sandpaper into the slot, preferably folded around something for better rigidity. CAREFULLY sand off a TINY bit from the high bump. Be very patient and slowly sneak up on the right height with repeated brief sandings, just a few strokes, testing every time.
