My son and his family moved recently from San Diego to a small town in Mississippi. The first Sunday we attended mass at our new parish, we proceeded, with all eight children, to kneel and receive communion on the tongue as we did in San Diego. The parishioners acted shocked and pointed at us like we were oddities. One person actually stepped up and took pictures of the kids kneeling and receiving communion. On top of that, my daughter-in-law and my granddaughter both wore veils which brought even more attention. My son, later at breakfast recalled what happened and told the kids, "Given time, they'll see our reverence for Jesus and follow suit." Some months later, we're now seeing others kneel and receive communion on the tongue and one or two veils are being worn.

As much as I hate to say it, but as a Nigerian, I was surprised to see that the USCB directed for removal of altar rails for kneeling. In Nigeria it is not a question, we all kneel, every female veils, we don't have lay ministers (even though it might take hours to distribute the Eucharist), amongst other things (the reverence levels is way up, unlike what I saw in the US).While the USCB complain that a vast majority of people do not believe in the real presence, I will put the blame on them trying to water down the tradition of kneeling and reception by tongue. As much as they encourage standing and reception by hand, people would keep "not believing" in the divine presence. It is more like their words say something, but their actions say something else, I would wish they deliberate on this.

Now, if I want to kneel to receive, I can’t just get down on my knees in the middle of an open room without holding on to something. I’m 70 and for about the last 6 or 7 years I have been unable to kneel without a support. Fortunately, our church never got rid of the communion rails and the pastor now stands behind the rail so any communicant may kneel to receive, or those who prefer to stand may stand.

@deb98068 ай бұрын
Although I heard a Dominican priest on a Catholic answer column say the arguments about it is wrong. The hand is not dirtier or less respectful in the hand which is how the early disciples and people had the Eucharist. The mouth is full of sin he said, gossip, sexual, slander, swearing, the list is long. It's not more sacred It made sense and I wont enter into arguments about it. If someone is reverent with either, it's good. Saying this mass or act of receiving is "better" is just making more division.
@tsdrda8 ай бұрын
@@deb9806 respectfully disagree. Do you believe every particle, no matter how small, is the body, blood, soul and divinity of Jesus? So many particles end up on the floor with receiving on the hand. If you look at the paten, even with those receiving on the tongue, there are often particles that the priest ends up consuming. Over 80% of people who receive on the hand, no longer believe that is Jesus and it is only a symbol. Not so with those who receive on the tongue. It is an act of humility to receive on the tongue. It is also a sign to those who are watching us, including our young children that this is something VERY special. Our Lord can not be used in demonic ways by those with evil intentions who steal the consecrated host in their hands. It was never to be so! If you watch Mass of the Ages (beautiful trilogy on KZbin), it shows how some bishops started Communion in the hand without consent and even though the Vatican tried to stop this, it was too late. Same with removing the kneelers from churches. This was never supposed to happen. Notice the “trends” in moving us farther from Christ instead of closer. It is initially awkward to receive on the tongue. But, oh my goodness, I could not do otherwise now. My suggestion for you is to read the short St Thomas Aquinas prayer for “before receiving Communion” and “after receiving Communion”. The most beautiful reflections that help focus our attention and gratitude on Jesus. What a gift we have been given! Finally, ask Mary what she wants you to do in receiving her Son. She is the most humble of women and she will lovingly direct you because she wants you to be one with Jesus.

Initially, after having rediscovered my Christian faith and reconverted to Catholicism, one of the reasons why I felt reluctant to return to Mass, and to Catholicism itself, was because of these “little” details, just like the correct way to receive Our Lord. I think that when a person begins to realize and believe in the true presence of Our Lord in the Eucharist, everything changes. We begin to perceive things very differently than before, when our faith was either lukewarm or practically non-existent. No matter how many masses I have already attended, just knowing that Christ is so truly alive in the most holy sacrament, and especially at that moment during mass, my heart trembles and rejoices in adoration (it is an inexplicable feeling, almost like a mixture of joy and of fear of God). one of our priests will have the single kneelers with place to put hands, can't put picture, but you've seen them at weddings and adoration etc. They are portable, easy to move and you don't need the time or expense to put in railings. So, one day after Mass, i asked a Filipino woman/friend of mine why she received on the tongue on her knees. She told me we should NEVER receive on the hands because our hands are not consecrated. Only the priest's hands are by the bishop when he is ordained. Since then, i have always received on my knees, on the tongue and NEVER from anyone but a priest. I never felt right receiving from an "extraordinary minister" but never knew why. Now i know. Also, I noticed young women wearing veils at Mass. Initially I thought how strange! Even kind of thought it silly or ridiculous. Then one day leaving Mass it hit me that I needed to go buy a veil to wear at Mass. It had to be the holy spirit because I was a little resistant and a little shy about it at first. Then I noticed more younger women were veiling also! Then I decided to attend one of the monthly Latin Masses that they had recently started at my old church. It wasn't long before I fell in love with the TLM. I move to another state 2 years ago and now I can go to the TLM every week! In fact I go twice a week on Wednesdays as well! Once you go to the traditional Mass, you won't want to go back to the novus ordo Mass... But you have to go 3 or 4 times before you really understand what is going on. It's essentially much the same except more reverent and some of the traditions we're taking away with the Novus ordo. But they're such beautiful traditions, and I feel such a connection with the entire church for the past 2000 years and all of our ancestors who attended the same Mass. Is something that words cannot describe! I'm not in Rad Trad, but a GLAD Trad! 😊 I fell in love with the Mass all over again.

None of my local parishes prohibit recieving on the tongue. None of them prohibit kneeling either, however, for a larger guy like me, it is difficult for me to kneel without a commuinon rail or a kneeler. And two out of five local parishes have this.

Thank you for this. I go both to Novus Ordo and TLM. I LOVE TO RECIVE KNEELING ON THE TONGUE. Last Sunday at Novus Ordo, the man to my right, receiving from the Priest, knelt and received on the tongue. So when I was about to receive, I knelt. The Franciscan who was giving communion asked to stand up so I said to him that I wished to receive the Lord keeling. He insisted and I said to him that the man in front of me knelt and received and asked him why I could not. Then he gave me communion. In truth, I was most confused.

I'm really sorry that younger Catholics have been deprived of the Latin Mass and the whole tradition that went before it and with it. If we had to have a reformed Liturgy, it should have been reverent as the old one.

I veil and I receive knelling and on the tongue at my home parish. When I attend mass at other churches I will receive standing. Seems like most of the people I see veiling/knelling are either the younger crowd or the older crowd. Do you think they will bring communion rails back?
@workinprogress-ye5or8 ай бұрын
My priest uses 2 single alter kneelers with a rail on top. He puts one at the end of each row for him and the deacon. They stand in back of them. If someone wants to kneel they can, if they don't, they don't. Very easy, no need for long rails or spending money. I thought it was a great idea. Some like to kneel with getting communion in the hand also. I saw that often when they still had rails. They'd cup their hands.Sometimes a "fix" isn't that hard.

Thank you, my sister, for your beautiful words. I receive kneeling and on the tongue. It is most the reverent way to receive the Lord of Lords and King of Kings. Praying for church to do away with communion in the hand. It has done nothing but a scandal and weakened the faith in the real presence in the Eucharist.

In my Parish we have a double kneeler placed at the head of the center aisle, where communicants have the options of receiving either kneeling or standing, on the tongue or in the hand.

My hands are not less holy than my lips, my tongue, my teeth, my stomach and all my body parts that are needed to receive Holy Communion. The fact that Christ does humble himself so much that he is entrusting his body in my hands is mind blowing and produces the utmost reverence for me. For centuries it was the rule to receive the Eucharist standing in the hand. There is no problem for me if people want to kneel down and receive on the tongue. But don't try to tell me that this is in itself more holy.

Like you, I was brought up to bow my head whenever I said the name of Jesus. I am an old man now but, when I was young, everyone else around me in church did the same. When did that stop? I now feel that when we all say the Hail Mary together at Sunday Mass I am the only one doing it. But I don't even think about. It is a totally natural thing for me to do, and I will never stop.

I've had more than one EME since (at other parishes around town) hesitate when I want to receive on the tongue, so I prefer to receive from our priests. Thank you for such a convicting video, I'll definitely be reflecting on it! God bless you!

Sadly, I can no longer kneel to receive on the tongue due to medical issues but as I bow I visualize myself kneeling as the priest approaches. I love your explanation of imagining oneself as the image of a pilgrim traveling to the feast of the Lamb instead of feeling like you are in a queue. I also visualize that I am approaching the Cross (which I am in the church) and there comforting Jesus in his Passion as I receive him into my body.

In the same light, priests should not refuse to give communion on the hand and standing. This was denied to me once some time ago.

I went to Mass near my office during lunch recently and when going up for communion i was told, sorry hand only. Reluctantly i received in the hand but i wrote to the Archbishop that afternoon. I received a response 2 weeks later from the Vicar General thanking me for my love for the eucharist and saying he would speak to that particular parish priest. If you see receiving on the tongue is discouraged, speak up and report to the bishop! It's only our love for Christ in the eucharist that will stop this
@berrnisimon97858 ай бұрын
I have not received by tongue for many many years now because it was discouraged by our parish, I accepted and was obedient to it. I do bow at the announcement (body of Christ) and then receive by hand. I hope I still get to heaven 😊

This topic upsets me, I can't believe that most Catholics don't believe he is present in the Eucharist when he told us all that he is.
