Signing IQ makes absolutely zero sense. And they didn’t do it, deadline passed

@@LukeTrovisi I mean there’s a few reasons. 1. IQ is the most valuable piece we have if we want to make a trade package for a superstar. If we sign IQ we can’t trade him until next season because you can’t trade a player for 6 months after signing and that would put us past the trade deadline. 2. We don’t know his market value. He’s asking for 4 years 100million. Let’s say there’s another team that thinks he’s worth that money, then we can match that offer and keep him, because he’s a restricted free agent. 3. Jalen Brunson is a superstar and will be paid max contract in 2025. I don’t think we should be paying Brunson 35/40 million+ per season and then 20 million to IQ. That would be 60 million of the market cap (about 40%) just for two point guards. Then my second reason ties into this as well because if IQ has a great year and another team thinks he’s worth 4 years 130 or 140 million, we definitely can’t match that and pay Brunson and another superstar. By paying him now, we are essentially bidding against ourselves because we don’t know what his market value it yet. Also he wants 4 years $100 million because that’s what Malcolm Brogdon is getting paid. 20-22 million a year. But honestly as much as a love IQ, Brogdon is the better player. Let’s see what IQ does this year. The Knicks not giving a contract really applies pressure on IQ. If he has a great season, someone will give him the bag. If he doesn’t have a great year, then he loses market value. Paying a guy 4yr 100 million for one good season seems kind of crazy anyway.
