If you are a Forged In Fire Fan this is a great way to start making knives. This machine is a belt grinder to shape the blade and double hollow grinder to create a uniform hollow grind on both sides in just a very short time I own this machine now and have made several knives from Farrier Rasp and other steel i have ordered. I never let steel get hot in my hands so it doesn't affect the temper as it never gets over body temp before cooling. Purchase auto body files in bulk can make knife in about 10 minutes, sharpen to razor edge in less than 4 minutes I usually wrap Parachute cord for handles. sell at events a craft fairs, gun shows, motorcycle rally's sell all day long $75.00 to $100.00 depending on handle material. I have made Texas and Tennessee style Bowie knives with Elk horn and various wood handles. Great for a hobby knife maker for additional income. I used to fish spent a bunch on equipment and boat never made me a dime although I did enjoy it it never made me a dime. Now my other hobby pays for fishing and new guns for hunting and travel.

1:40-1:50 to much heat from to long grinding time without cooling = the metal changes colours and .... boom - there goes the temper.

Who told anyone they can't make a knife from a file, or do a double hollow grind? Most people don't grind both sides of the blade simultaneously, but they don't need too. And they don't spend $4k on a bench grinder with some metal and wheels cobbled onto it either.

Color changes such as those we're seeing in the metal during grinding indicate it's been heated enough to change the temper.

I don't know where this guy is getting his information but he's completely full of it. He makes a statement I've been told for 25 years you can't make a knife out of a file. Fact there's a ton of KZbin videos that say the cheapest way to get started knife making is the use an old file.

Anza has been making double hollow ground knives out of high carbon steel files for more that 30 years. I have many dating all the way back to the early 1980’s.

That’s neat. I don’t have any Anza folders that I can remember. I’ll have to pull all of those out of the boxes there in and see what I have. I check them every few years. I’ve kept all the steel from touching anything, and there always pristine. I have quite a few, along with many other knives and such. I know I don’t remember all of them.

That's how Anza knives are made, except that the top wheel reaches up several feet high with the belts being special order extra long in order to avoid overheating the steel.

I think there is a reason they didnt show a close up of the finished product. Raining hot metal all over the place. I just cant see that being the best way,
@ravenexi

Unless the two belts are touching when he does the final grind wouldn't there be a bit more grinding required to get it to an edge? Whatever gap is between the belts would be left on the bottom.

Yes, you do an a belt sander. If you don't, you're gonna have some nice sanded knuckles. The belt sander is not a lathe.

If you been told, for 25y, that you can't make a knife from a file; then, I think you got the WRONG people around you. Instead of hanging around negative, pessimistic people; try finding supportive people, who will encourage you to attempt to do things. There's a saying "you are an average of the people around you"...if that's true, you are an "average of "can't make X, Y, Z"". As a suggestion, take some personal responsibility for your self and the past 25y and make new friends 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼. Good luck! Make as many knives you can out of old files!!! Theirs this lady (look it up) who turned rasps into knives and is selling it for about 500.00 a piece. Joking aside: you seem like a smart guy....you need new friends if they are pulling you down with that bull crap of "you can't make a knife from a file". What the heck are they, lawyers? Lawyers are the type who will constantly tell you what you can't do. It's your personal responsibility to ignore bad advice.

Just grind at a lower speed or with some sort of lubricant or coolant man. Why risk the temper of the steel just to save five minutes?
@MrJohn714

Very interesting indeed sir! I have one question, why do you use such a narrow belt as opposed to the more common two inch belt, does it have to do with the amount of force needed to keep the blade in the V?

+MrJohn714 I quessin that grinding both sides means double surface area and might bind the motor up.
