6 years later edit: I was 14 please don’t take this comment seriously! thank you 🫡 The animal question keeps coming up, so here are my thoughts. The animals who can talk are actually all humans, but they're depicted as animals based on their personalities maybe? Mae is a cat so she's stubborn, curious, and some times a lil bean! Gregg is a fox/dog so he's hyper, loud, joyful, and playful. Bea is a alligator/reptile so she's more "eHuuuUHg", likes to be alone, a lil bit distant, and so forth. Angus is a bear because he's chill, slower, big, and protective(??). And I'd say others are birds because they like to move all over and socialize, hence the one old bird dude that seems to be the head of the town committee. And so forth with the other animals that can talk. Heh, just a theory :P (edit: wow I didn't realize that I'd get this much support! Haha, thank you!)

I fell like this game really did the gay relationship thing right. Greg and Angus are treated just like a normal couple would be, and it doesn't shove the fact that their gay down your throat. It is nice when games do that~ (Edit: the original content of this comment has not been and will not be altered, but I would like to clarify that I was 14 when I made this, had no idea I was nb and bi, and while I still love this game and Angus/Greggs relationship, the phrasing "not shoving it down your throat" came from an uneducated perspective. I was repeating things homophobic people had said to me in order to feel better about not hating a gay relationship. Jack, I literally have a dream symbol book, and here are my discoveries upon my research: Bear = "Can represent a person who is a little stupid but good-natured. The symbol often indicates disappointment or that one is about to disappoint someone..." Maybe Mae feels that she's disappointing her parents? No job, quit school, it takes a toll. Squirrel = "Fast, shy, smart animal that symbolizes ideas, plans, and hope. Longing to be in nature..." Maybe this references why she came back to her hometown? I didn't find anything about a Tuba, Saxophone, or an Accordion, but I did find something about a Violin! Violin = It says it can be an "echo of the soul," and represents "domestic happiness." She likes being at home? Lantern = "Symbol of the light of awareness; it usually points to the need for taking a closer look at your problems..." This could point to her anger issues. Fire = "Either it is destroying something or it is giving a signal..." The lanterns are leading her to the instruments, therefore, leading her to happiness? I hope you enjoyed my lengthy explanation! IF ANYONE'S CURIOUS, HERE IS WHAT MAE DID AND WHY SHE'S KNOWN AS 'KILLER': Mae gained notoriety among the townsfolk after being involved in a violent episode at her school's softball match. Six years prior to the events of Night in the Woods, Mae experienced a sudden form of dissociation from the real world - which seemed like an acute episode of derealization. She saw objects and people as just meaningless shapes, and not really existing. She felt a deep sadness for everything around her, lamenting that nothing was there for her anymore and that everything was just "stuff in the universe." The next day at the softball match, a second episode occurred, something "broke inside her" and before she knew it, she was beating Andy Cullen's head in with a bat in front of the entire school. Following that, most parents told their children to stay away from Mae. By the events of Night in the Woods, most of the kids in town know Mae through the attack, nicknaming her "Killer". The incident put a strain on Mae's relationship with her family. Financially, the Borowski's went deep into debt trying to treat her. Mae was sent to Dr. Hank for treatment, where he prescribed keeping a journal as a means of keeping her emotions in check. Mae claims it helps her feel grounded with reality and that it works somewhat. She seemed to be doing alright until she left for college. There, the effects of dissociation seemed to intensify and Mae never made a single friend at college because she was terrified of leaving her room. She was left starving or else downing entire pizzas in one go. She drank cough syrup just to sleep and forget about her living nightmare. Mae was especially terrified of the rusty statue of the founder outside her window: always a mess of shapes watching and pointing down at her. She felt too scared to phone anyone for help. After three semesters, Mae finally mustered up the courage to leave and return to the safety of home, where things weren't just "dead shapes."

My reason was that I was burned out on learning, and I was, but watching that part of the game, it made me realize that I was partially like Mae, too. I was terrified to leave my room. People didn't feel like people, and I felt like everyone hated me. I gained *25 POUNDS* from stress, anxiety, and loneliness. My roommate was my best friend from high school, but she had way more classes than me and was gone like all the time. The next semester she completely moved to a different room because she became an RA (residential aid) and RAs can't have roommates. After hearing all about Mae's reason for leaving, I nearly cried because I realized I did almost the exact same thing....

Well, Jesus talked about his Father, which sets a clear example to follow. However, God himself is above gender, or rather, both genders represent God. In the Bible, He is described using both male and female imagery: protectiveness of a father, nursing and comforting of a mother, for example. I wonder if the plural "they" would refer to the Trinity? One of the names of God in the Bible is Elohim - plural form. I don't know anyone who would refer to God as "they", but there's three persons in one God, so technically, it could be possible.

If you follow Gregg's entire sidestory, his problems becomes clear: it's Mae. He used to be a wild child like Mae in highschool, but then Angus came and "tamed" him. Made an adult responsible "man" out of a once rebellious and irresponsible "boy". And then Mae comes back home. And Gregg had a 'relapse' back to his old rebellious ways. And that caused them to fight because Mae is a friend to the both of them, since Angus believed Mae is a bad influence on Gregg and she should kept her distance from him. I'm really making it sound like Angus was a jerk, but he really wasn't. He wanted the best for Gregg, and unfortunately "the best" here means putting some distance between him and his once-bestie.

General Chowwalba Bea’s story is that she was a valedictorian at school that had a bright future for herself. Then her mom died in her final year of highschool causing her dad to mentally breakdown. This forced Bea to abandon all her dreams of going to college and manage the Pickaxe. Probably due to the financial burden of treating her mother and her death, Bea and her dad couldn’t keep their house and had to move out into an apartment. Bea’s daily life is basically wasting away at the Pickaxe managing the entire thing and at night, she comes home and has to manage her family’s budget and bills. While being effectively the manager of the store, she’s technically only a normal employee and she isn’t able to do some things without her dad’s permission which annoys her considering her dad doesn’t seem to do much of anything anymore. When she sleeps, in her room that she hadn’t even bothered unpacking despite having moved in 6 months ago, she hopes that she can dream of the college life she could’ve had if her mom never died. She’s known to even have gone to a college party 2 hours drive away and pretend to be a college student. This is why Bea initially resents Mae so much. Mae willingly gave up the one thing Bea always wanted and could never have. That and her naivete and childishness for someone her age clashes heavily with Bea’s own personality. Although if you go through her storyline, Bea and Mae end up really close with each other. Their initially clashing personalities end up meshing up really well as Bea is able to police and control Mae while Mae is able to get Bea to really lighten up and have fun occasionally. I’ll always prefer the Bea storyline over the Gregg storyline if for nothing but seeing the friendship that Mae and Bea are able to build over Mae and Gregg’s already existing friendship. I think some of my favourite moments near the end of the game, where Mae tells Bea or Gregg why she did what she did in the past and why she left college as well as Bea or Gregg yelling to the cult member that he or she was going to kill him for messing with Mae, works better with Bea over Gregg because with Bea, it really highlights how close the 2 have become with each other after barely knowing each other less than 2 weeks ago.

Okay so I'm pausing 20mns in to say this. What if the characters aren't animals, it's just Mae's perception of people? I only recall indications, like Angus being good at growling and Mae's dad calling her kitten as a nickname. Don't get me wrong, I love anthropomorphic animals. It's just that Bea's comment about murder and hunting season, along with the squirrels and quadrepedal cat running around the neighborhood makes me wonder.

Angus and Gregg are what Movie writers try to create miserably. This couple is so well written, they feel like real people who are in a real relationship. I’m Gay and I wish I had someone like Gregg. These two are the perfect couple and they’re so cute! Also for Jack. On the second day when you’re looking for Angus, if you ask Gregg first he’ll say, “I see him, E V E R Y N I G H T.” I don’t know if it was a dirty joke but that made me love these two even more.

Theory: All the characters are actually human, but Mae chooses to/has convinced herself to perceive them as animals, because like Bea said, "it ain't murder if it's animals." That way she can feel less guilty and somehow justify what she's done in the past (hence why that one character called Mae "killer" and described her as dangerous, and hence the drunk outburst of "stabby stab stab"). But hey, that's JUST A THEORY! A GAME THEORY! PS: I haven't played this game or watched it other than Jack's playthrough, and on this video I'm only 20 minutes in, so if I get proven wrong later, sorry! Mae was sent to Dr. Hank for treatment, where he prescribed keeping a journal as a means of keeping her emotions in check. Mae claims it helps her feel grounded with reality and that it works somewhat. She seemed to be doing alright until she left for college. There, the effects of dissociation seemed to intensify and Mae never made a single friend at college because she was terrified of leaving her room. She was left starving or else downing entire pizzas in one go. She drank cough syrup just to sleep and forget about her living nightmare. Mae was especially terrified of the rusty statue of the founder outside her window: always a mess of shapes watching and pointing down at her. She felt too scared to phone anyone for help. After three semesters, Mae finally mustered up the courage to leave and return to the safety of home, where things weren't just "dead shapes."
