Knife making - Forging an Ulu Knife

I love these knives and will probably make a ton more in the future since they vary a lot in shape and size and quite fun to make, might even make and sell some one day , if people would be interested!

It an Inuit knife it is called ulu it is also know as women knife there are different sizes for different uses and the cutest one is for sewing

Traditionally, chisel ground, so the blade can cut away from the fingers of the off-hand that holds the item being cut, ie seal skin, fish, etc. Nice ulu. I enjoyed this video. Thanks for sharing.

YES! Yes, I would buy one of these! They are a really useful blade shape and the ergos of the handle are perfect for the blade. A heavy-duty herb chopper, or a skinner/flesh scraper, or a leather-strip cutter...and awesome for cutting pizza! EDIT: I'd love to have the option of buying one without a handle. That would save any curly Customs questions about the antler.

Is your swage block disposable. Mild plate is free and that block would probably go for 1000 where I live. Just chisel the heck out of it though

Ulus are used for everything kitchen related...so prepping fish and meat, skinning, chopping herbs, etc. It was traditionally a womans knife, ut more seen as a utility knife than a cooking utensil. If the job needed a sharp edge, they probly used an ulu. Hope this helped! Cheers!

Ulus are the "everything" knife of the inuit people. Used for prepping meat, skinning caribou/deer, chopping herbs, prepping fish, basicly any job that required a sharp edge....traditionally a womans knife. There are many many different versions also, depending on where you are. I.e. alaskan ulus are different than Nunavik (northern quebec) ulus...so theyre quite interesting to research and fun to make! Cheers!

It is pure raw linseed oil Its on amazon sunnyside raw linseed oil or go to a antque store and they might have a full can of it in a tin can just a suggestion hope this helps

It makes me think of fresh seal meat. Because that is what it's mainly used for. Skinning seal, tanning and even in cooking. (by inuit from Alaska to Greenland.)
