In this video, I show you how I grind my swooping plunges after heat treat. Then we'll flip the knife over and do a false edge(or a swedge).... If you are a beginner, I have a whole series start to finish on knife making...( • Knife Making for the B... )

Damn brother I’ve gotta say this is probably one of the best “how to grind bevels” videos i’ve seen on KZbin and I’m almost certain I’ve watched most of them.. Fantastic job partner!

Thanks, almost lost the overhead footage, that's why it was 2 days late... took me 5 hours to finally recover it... Never worked so hard on editing a video in my life...

Well I have learned a lot from your video today. I started grinding and finally understand letting the belt do the work. Creates a lot less heat too. With the 36 I nailed it on my strong side. My off side I kinda got a straight plunge. I learned a lot about pressure on the knife and what different pressure in different places does. I’m very excited!!! Back on it in a bit

Man !!! Hats off to ya Dave. Free hand grinding is a work of great skill !!! I thought I was doing great. NOT. Much improved but much to improve. Wish I could quit working my day job and focus on knife making but I gotta pay the freakin bills. Damn I wish I could hit the lottery!!! I started my grind line on the side of the blade too high. When I picked back up today I realized I would end up with a flat grind unless I changed the angle. That was tough to do but I think I did pretty good. Not perfect but hey, I’m learning!!!

I think the swedge thing is that its a reverse curve and its easy to gouge it. At least that’s what has hung me up on the two I’ve done lol

Great video on grinds boss... Nice job taking your time to show the progression on the swooping plung. I am having trouble getting the swege straight this video clearly shows some valuable information I am going to give a go. Hey is the swege the same if you are trying to produce a fighter style Bowie the swege is sometimes very small or shallow if that makes any sense.. I'm working on putting that Bowie build video together. Man what a lot of work... Thanks and Blessings...Martin

Yeah same thing.. ya might want to take a piece of scrap steel, shape it like your bowie and practice the grind 1st... I use to take steel, shape both ends like the blade to practice bevels...and swedges..

Anyone have trouble with rust on your toilet rim from grinding then going to pee and metal shavings fall on the toilet rim and then rusts. It’s really hard to clean off. You need a scrubby !!! Maybe TMI but I’ve never had that issue till I started grinding knives 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 Great video just the same Dave. Like I said perfect timing cause I’m about to give it a try. Take it easy 👍

Yeah man, nice to hear your making progress... Swooping plunges are definitely a lot harder, i still have problems with them......... I've been lucky to only hit my knuckles once or twice... I keep a bottle of rubbing alcohol on the bench(mainly for cleaning blades and ink), so clean it out, wrap it up & back to work... they have these bandaids at the dollar store with antibotic on them or you can get triple antibotic there, dollar store is great for that stuff...

I almost forgot, get a compressor(you probably have one for carpentry), then when you leave, blow everything off(leave the respirators out of the shop if possible too)... I told that to Alec Steele a long time ago, if you notice he always hangs his stuff up outside the grinding room...
@e.t.preppin7084
@e.t.preppin7084 5 жыл бұрын
I had to bring a bit of real life humor to the table. I’ve tried using the compressor to blow off my clothes but somehow those metal shavings still makes it inside. Great idea, I’m trying to remove my jacket before coming inside. Haha

I thought I was setting my grind with a 36. When I went to change my belt I realized I had been using an old 120. Man I’m losing my mind. Good thing though cause I got more time to make less radical mistakes.

Thanks, really appreciate that... Looks ,like you are just getting started... Ya know, it's awesome to see young people take an interest and find a passion, really is awesome... Seeing you design and make things is sweet, but i gotta be honest, the way you handle those tools can get you hurt... I know being the safety police, isn't kool & you probably won't listen... but if nothing else, take 1 piece of advice, 1 mistake can change the rest of your life... I have to fight 3 times as hard because my arm is so messed up... I wish you the best of luck, but just be careful...take it easy...

@@ivyironworks6698 Nothing big, just maybe be more aware(I have to do it too, it's easy to forget, these tools can hurt us), you're doing good... Wearing a respirator, would be something I would strongly suggest, that metal dust will mess you up...Keep up the good work...

@@ivyironworks6698 You can actually get one of those respirators that clamp in the front, so if you have to talk, you can pull it down real quick, then clip it back up...
