Try padding out the jaws with double sided tape and neoprene or yoga mat. It should help with uneven or textured surfaces. The double sided tape used for window film or wood working templates is easier to remove than others.

Good Morning Walter I love your videos I also did purchase one of these vices you are correct it has many uses I am just getting in to knife making but I am a gunsmith I like to shoot trap as well so one of my specialties is shot gun work I install custom adjustable combs on the shotgun stock one of the toughest parts and most nerve racking is drilling the top half of the comb for the pins and bushings that have to be installed the problem is that the top of the comb is rounded but the part where the cut was made is flat and that is where I have to drill for the pins and bushings This vise is perfect for that I just put a small v notch in the plastic to accept the top curved part then I clamp it up install in my mill and drill I get perfectly straight hole every time . Thank you
