***** Hi Richard, I read on the Mora maintenance section that the purpose of sharpening a knife is to re-straighten the "bend" that the edge gets over time. Wouldn't you be straightening the edge by pulling back the knife, instead of cutting in a forward motion (like when you actually cut something)? I'm thinking the edge is formed backwards from normal use which is forward motion. So if you cut forward I'm thinking it'll bend backwards which can't be good?
@RichardBlaine9 жыл бұрын
It does not bend backwards it lops off the rounded part and creates a whole new edge. We are only talking about microns here!
@jubilantyogurt9 жыл бұрын
***** I'm trying to learn, so please bear with me on my rambling thoughts on the subject :) I've had limited luck with sharpening but I want to get it right. here's what Mora's knife care section says: "What mostly happens when a knife begins to become blunt is not due to pieces becoming removed from the cutting edge but instead is due to the edge “bending over“and thereby not cutting.The sharpening steels have therefore the function to press the edge back into place a central position." Though as you state, it's microns and maybe it doesn't matter.
@RichardBlaine9 жыл бұрын
The steel will straighten and edge only so many times before you need to take a knife to a full sharpening service. Now on the stone is where the microns come off not on the steel! Don't worry about your rambling it's cool!

Great sharpening video, informative and entertaining! My first knife was a Helle bushcraft knife with a scandi grind, and ever since i bought it it has been my favorite grind for bushcrafting. I did create a secondary bevel due to lack of sharpening knowledge at first, and boy did it take a long time to create a true scandi grind again.. lol

Great video, I really needed this. I just recently purchased a Mora knife to go in my backpack, and I never thought much about the grind on a knife until now, I just sharpened my knives and that was that. The only reason I tried the Mora was because of all the people that swear by them and they are very inexpensive compared to others, so for 8 bucks I buy what I expect to be a piece of crap only to find it's the sharpest knife I have ever owned, and after cutting a 1/2 inch rope over 100 times it will still shave hair. Mora is without a doubt the best knife dollar for dollar on the market and I thank you for the knowledge I needed to keep it that way.

Mr. Blaine , Thank you for the instructions on sharpening a scandi grind knife. I am new to these knives. I have recently bought two and have not needed to sharpen them and your tip on pushing down on the edge to get the angle will no doubt be a big benefit to me. I only have a cheap two sided Home Depot stone. When I sharpen my Mora I guess I'm doing a micro bevel. The knife never seems really sharp until I take it to my Henckles kitchen steel. After the steel it lights up! What grit do you think my stone is? I use the fine side of course. What grit would I need to get that "just steeled" feel. or.....what are your thoughts of taking a steel into the woods? Do they make a packable steel?

I have bought a carbon Mora to practice sharpening. I have diamond plates with grits: 200, 400, 600, 2000. After polishing the edge on my 2000 diamond the surface is still quite scratched. It shaves easily but it does not feather paper at all. After "stroping" it on a piece of cardboard I can feel a wire (I can't feel it when on 2000). Is that a burr or am I just bending the cutting edge? Should I get a finer ceramic stone? Would a ceramic honing rod be of any use in case of a scandi grind?

Hi Richard, where can I find a bench stone base like the one you have in your video for the 2 diamond stones? Or maybe what the brand name is might help me locate one. The one that came with my set sits up to high and is sometimes uncomfortable working on. Yours appears to rest fairly flat and the stone is much lower to the bench surface than mine. I cant seem to find anywhere online that sells one like yours.

If I used Carborundum Wetstones instead on my Marttiini Full Tang Stainless Chrome Steel knife,I understand it could take longer,but would it be any more likely to ruin the lovely polished affect of the metal? I have some extremely fine grit stones,very old,but very good ones? I also have a Mora Knife,much less of a beauty than my Marttiini,maybe I would have a practise on that.I am not too tight to buy a diamond sharpner,just worried they will be too harsh and ruin the blade by grinding away too much. Thanks,Neil.
@RichardBlaine11 жыл бұрын
I don't like carborundum as it is a bit to aggressive. If you have to use one go lightly with it to create your edge and then refine the edge with the better stones and maybe a good stropping if needed and you should be good to go!

I am looking to sharpen my mora knives but I am limited on finances. Your system looks fantastic and is less costly than say... japanese waterstones, but it is still over my budget. I would love to have the system that you have but I realize the gear you have is a lifetime accumulation. What would you suggest for a beginner or entry level set up. My only scandi grinds at the moment, are my mora blades but I plan to get a higher end bushcrafting knife (hopefully for christmas). There is a good chance the bushcraft blade will be a scandi as well. Obviously, my spyderco sharpmaker will not be sufficient to sharpen the new knife or the mora knives. With practice and after learning hand sharpening, I hope to reprofile some of my folding knives as well. Any suggestions as to a beginner setup would be a big help. Also knowing what should be my first and second upgrade would be a lot of help as well. Thanks in advance for the advice

@RichardBlaine10 жыл бұрын
I don't use anything but water with the diamond plates or the ceramic plates. I don't like using oils because what happens if you run out of oil and then try to use water is the water bead! Water is a universal carrier and oil is not! Thanks for finding and watching my videos and I hope you enjoy more of them! Cheers!

You sure go into a lot of detail :D I appreciate it. Unfortunately I don't have $200 to spend on sharpening my $100 knife collection. After a lot of searching I just gave up and bought a $5 scythe sharpener that my grandfather used plus an inexpensive synthetic stone with a finer grid. Maybe I'll invest later on. Right now I just feel overwhelmed by the options.
@RichardBlaine10 жыл бұрын
Well in the long run on a budget you can buy a Norton medium India stone for under 20 bucks and it will cut any metal to get your edge started and then you can move on to finer grits or work with what you have but if your knives are dull then an India will get you going! Thanks for watching! Cheers!
@afrog26667 жыл бұрын
A regular stone will do a regular knife just fine, it has worked well for hundreds of years. But in the kitchen, you might want finer stones, ceramics, glass, diamond etc. Preparing meals day in and day out is a far cry from cutting branches, preparing critters and fish or if you`re in extreme circumstances like a soldier or under attack, taking a human life. A PERSON can be killed with a screwdriver if it comes to that, so your knife doesn`t have to be that sharp for that. It`s more for preparing food in a simple way with minimal effort, that`s when you need a sharp knife :)

thank you. I own that exact knife and was wondering how to maintain that particular edge. It is a high carbon steel blade. how do you yay the blade so as not to rust quickly. I heard the words "patina" and "vinegar" once in a review.
@RichardBlaine9 жыл бұрын
+JERZEECOWBOY The blade will patina on it's own and that is natural to carbon steels. It is the rust that you want to avoid. So each time you use the knife in the field rinse it with fresh water and dry it carefully and make sure it is DRY and then oil the blade a little bit and you will be good to go!

Richard, THANK YOU! I'm posting this 2½ years after you posted this video, so I don't know if you will ever read it. I have only just now stumbled onto it. Here goes anyway. As you mentioned, most sharpening Scandi grind knives videos emphasize the micro bevel is a MUST. I've always disagreed and finally quit trying to go against the ill informed masses. You have restored my faith in how a proper Scandi grind should be maintained. Also, I have advocated the diamond stones as you do, and as an Arkansan with a life long love of our Novaculite stones from the Hot Springs quarries I was pleasantly surprised you used one. This is the first video I have found that ever mentioned Arkansas Oil Stones! So, again thank you for this video. I no longer feel adrift alone in a lifeboat in the Stone Wars of knife sharpening!

Damn Richard, what a clearly and detailed explanation of what a Scandi grind is and how to sharpen knives with this type of edge. The tip of pressing down and demonstrating how to find the proper angle is so simple yet seems like genius. If I wanted to use a belt sander then I would imagine that a platten behind the belt to keep it flat would be necessary to avoid creating a convex bevel or "saber grind"? I gather from your method that it requires very fine grits, so does that mean the average stones and belts that range from 80 to maybe 400 would be less desirable?
@RichardBlaine8 жыл бұрын
In my experience it is not necessary to use a belt sander or grinder. The belts can cause the scandi edge to come out wavvy. The scandi is sooooooooooo easy that you can to it by hand and get it done fast! Trust me! Thanks for watching! Cheers!

Hi there Richard! I use a Mora Companion in the field, but always carry a strop ( my belt with green compound on the rough side ) and actually find that this is a wonderful idea for keeping a nice sharp knife out there. One thing I've noticed though is that I always find that the edge is more shiny than the rest of the grind. Am I rolling the edge, or just polishing it more? Should I just stick with my Smiths two in one ( coarse and fine diamond grits )?
@RichardBlaine10 жыл бұрын
No No! The strop you are using is fine but carry a stone or diamond with you because after you do your tuneup something I did not talk about in this vid is that a Scandi WILL roll if you don't put a micro bevel on it. You know what I am talking about?

Richard, Can you explain in a video, how to get rid of a micro-bevel on a scandi grind knife (one example would be Mora black bushcraft which surprisingly does have a micro-bevel on its scandi grind bevel)? Mind you I am VERY new to knife sharpening so a bit of "scandi grind micro-bevel removal for IDIOTS" would be very helpful. If you already have such a video can you please provide the link?

I have a dmt stone and the two spyderco stones that were used in this video. i used to be able to get my knives RAZOR sharp with only the dmt stone, but after a while the stone just stopped performing like it did before and i couldn't get my knives as sharp. i later purchased the two spyderco stones and was very happy with them until they also stopped performing. i know that the stones become less aggressive over time, buy i can spend twice as long sharpening as i did before and the edges i get are HORRIBLE. does anyone have a explanation or this? I clean the stones regularly and i'm getting kinda frustrated...

How are you cleaning your DMT and Spydie Stones?
@0609Kalashnikov10 жыл бұрын
***** dmt stones with just water and i use comet or baking soda for the ceramic stones.
@RichardBlaine10 жыл бұрын
You need to use the rough side of the sponge and comet and scrub the DMT's to get the filings out and then you should be good to go!

***** Ill give it a try! btw, i have a spyderco endura in vg10 steel. i can get it (or used to be able to get it) sharp enough to shave with, but it wont cut paper very well. could this be because the bevels aren't even? this was the first knife i ever sharpened and i accidentally made one side of the bevel a bit deeper. thanks for responding!
@RichardBlaine10 жыл бұрын
Depending on how old the knife is and how high up the grind you have gone you may have to reprofile both sides of the blade by leaning back a bit more to thin the blade out you know what I mean?

i feel like i am faster using water stones and the diamond stone i had dulled very quickly (fallkniven dc5), whereas my waterstones have a consistent cutting performance. what i also dont understand is the problem with the microbevel out in the field. how is that supposed to thin out the edge if done correctly? IMO its is the easiest way to bring it to shaving sharpness in 30 seconds and when you are at home you simply grind it back to 0 if the micro bevel gets too wide. i would simply use a spyderco doublestuff 1200 grit on and raise the bevel just slightly. 5 passes on each side will do the trick. if shaving sharpness is needed i´ll stropp it on my stroppbook, which is just a piece of leather with some compound on it. the whole process wont take more than 2 minutes. by using the sweeping motion your tip isnt ground correctly as well. i can tell by the last picture showing the rust/patina alsmost reaching the tip of the blade. by using the finishishing/arkansas stone like that wont it form a micro bevel by removing the burr with this angle? isnt easier and faster to stropp it 5 times on each side in order to remove the burr? and after hearing you say its better to sharpen the whole bevel out in the field i am interested in what type of stone you are going to use. it is definitely doable but a lot more time consuming than putting a microbevel on it or simply stropp it for a few seconds.
@jerms710010 жыл бұрын
how exactly are you removing the burr?

I usually use a piece of 2x4 and I lightly run the blade over the wood and the wire comes off!

In a video where Ben Dale the maker of the Edgepro talks about diamond stones, he said he has never used a diamond abrasive made in this country that is effective for sharpening knives. He said the problem is, since the steel of the blade is so much softer than the diamond, it wraps around the diamond particles, and as you move the knife it pulls the diamonds out of the glue or binding material, hence rendering them more useless after every pass. Kind of amazing to hear that coming from a guy whose lively hood comes is sharpening system. He says their fine for ceramic knives, but he thinks the diamond abrasive industry knows that they are not good for steel, but they market and sell them anyway to turn a profit. I'm a water stone guy my self, but I've been using my diamonds and spyderco ceramics for my Mora blades, I was wondering though Rich, what happens if you snap a point on your scandi? that has to be a major pain in the ass to re shape that point, and have the angle line up with the original grind of the knife. Have you ever had to do that?
@carlantaya1759 жыл бұрын
Max Savino Diamond plates are made to be used gently. The edge pro system applies a lot more pressure on the knife than traditional stone sharpening does. Richards technique is very methodical and he explains clearly that you do not need to use much pressure. You can get good fast consistent results with the edge pro system, but it's very limited in it's capacity to sharpen different knife grinds. Ironically... Sharpening a scandi knife like a mora on the edge pro would actually be more difficult than a traditional stone.

That is a pile of marketing Bullshit! I have used DMT for almost 20yrs and have never had this issue Mr. Dale talks about! Marketing bullshit!
@glytch58 жыл бұрын
I agree I haven't had an issue... let alone I don't use diamonds often to sharpen, I do use them frequently for lapping and thinning knives. I guess he once asked a company who sells lathe bits if he should buy a diamond bit over a carbide bit for cutting 1055 steel. The company told him not to buy the diamond because it won't last very long... my theory on this was that, when using a lathe you are removing SO MUCH metal... sharpening knives its tiny little flakes. Since the diamond is one layer high of course it would wear out in that situation quickly.
@RichardBlaine8 жыл бұрын
Crixus The Gaul The diamonds on the DMT product are mono surfaced and as gentle as other synthetic stones like an India or Crystolon if you use them gently as the diamonds are harder than anything else you don't need to push that hard and then thin blades nicely and then like I do I go to the Spydie ceramics and then the black arkie! They do come out sharp!
@glytch58 жыл бұрын
I mainly use water stones, and then Jnats/arks/slate hones to finish razors. idk why but when I first got the diamonds via your suggestion couple years back they were working pretty good, but I really don't use them much anymore for sharpening. I like the feedback on the softer stones. Ever hone a razor Richie? That would be a sweet vid! How was your election day man!?!?!?

Wow love the technical way how to sharp "at home"! Really good tip about with the finger pressure and angle! Just great! Now not nice talking bad about guys using 6, or 7 stones on the field. When you just used 3 at home with some water too! I am not defending the idea of bringing 6 stones to the field. In fact I dont think no one does that In bushcraft like you mention. But if you say so it must be true! So how do you in fact you would sharp you knives on the field? 3 stones, 6 stones . Both ways I think would be hard to do it. Any tips how to to do on the field? Good video!
