ZDP 189 and 52100 are my favourite steels - the perceived initial sharpness with 6k polished edge is very satisfying. This sharpening session was straight to the point and ended just right - ZDP 189 edge as should be. Now you have a boring knife - it will cut, and it will cut, and it will cut and you will search your youtube studio history to remember when was the last time you sharpen it. Once I went up to 8k Imanishi bester with zdp - it was stupid sharp and probably the best polished I have ever achieved.

My ZDP-189 just went dull today and I need to sharpen it. I have the Spyderco sharp maker as well as the worksharp ken onion knife sharpener. What angle should I go for? 15 or 20 per side?
@Jef
@Jef 3 жыл бұрын
Kinda depends on what you cut. Zdp is pretty decent stuff and can hold a 15 deg angle all day. However, in my own cutting tasks, i find i damage them when i go that acute. If you do want a 15 deg bevel and find that you are damaging it often, then put a 20 deg micro bevel on it, with the sharp maker. 👍

That came out real nice and really like the sharpening notch you added! I really like zdp, takes a killer edge.
@Jef
@Jef 5 жыл бұрын
I think I made the notch a bit larger than I needed, but that gives me room to sharpen couple dozen times, before I have to touch it again.

Love seeing the edges you get off this stone. I've got one on the way & hadda question for ya. I also picked up a naniwa nagura in 600 grit. Will that be beneficial to stir a slurry on the 6k side or should I have gotten a higher grit nagura?
@Jef
@Jef 4 жыл бұрын
Higher grit would have been better. You usually want to go with the same grit or higher, for the stone you are trying to create a slurry on you can just use a diamond plate to create a stone slurry directly. Try it though. It may work out better than i imagine. I’ve never used those particular naguras.

Shockingly quick burr on ZDP 189... took me about an hour with diamond plates to feel anything... truly unbelievable
@Jef
@Jef 4 жыл бұрын
I've heard, although I can't say with certainty, that Spyderco is running their zdp189 softer than they used to. Might explain why the burr formed quickly.

@@Jef I've heard spyderco is heat treating almost all their knives up to just 60-61HRC which really sucks if it's true.. what's the point of a super steel if it isn't getting a great heat treat? Do you ever try to just get a toothy working edge on this blade? If so what stone grit progression do you use?

I’ve been curious about lacquering stones. My debado 6k sends water to another dimension. Do you have any reservations about lacquer I should be aware of? The way that imanishi 1k performs/sounds reminds me of my debado 1500, you might like it but something tells me the 1k debado would be even better. Btw I got my venev 240/400 OCB and I think for the steels I want to use it on it’ll be perfect. I’ll try to have a full length video up after some use and I can make some unbiased opinions about seeing how I’m bad for filming about stones in the honeymoon phase lol. Seems every time we reach higher as sharpeners there’s always another rung. If sharpening was a video game it would have the most replay value haha. Happy to see you back!

I've tried putting spray lacquer on some stones. It didn't really work. If you can get your hands on that cashew lacquer, that Japanese stones are often coated in, it should work fine. I've never been able to find any around here. I could order it online, but I just never got around to it. I have been curious about those Debado stones. What is the highest grit you have in them? Do they produce a bright polish, or are they more like the Cerax line, and leave things hazy? Paddy just got himself some Venev stones, too. I am curious to see what you both think about them. I like the ones I have. They remind me of ceramics, to a degree.

@Jef Jewell Ok thanks good to know! I have heard they perform similarly to their other formulations but are much harder. I can get damn near close to a perfect mirror on the 6k but after talking with some subscribers about it, it’s the problem child of the group. I have the 600, 1500, 3k, and 6k. The 1500 and 3k are my favorites. Very reliable hard creamy stones. I can say for certain they produce a high luster/polish. I personally don’t think you’re missing out on anything but I’d be happy to send them to you so you can see for yourself. No pressure though.
