Those Haidu SiC stones did some work eh? 😮 Turned out fantastic! There’s really nothing like putting a crisp, even freehand bevel on a pocket knife 💜

Nice job. Im gonna have to invest in some dmt stones. I can pretty much sharpen almost anything with all the different grit belts i have but I struggle with rex45. I just can't get a good burr to form. That 67 hrc is no joke.

Id point you to gritomatic sic stones, but dmt work as well. They remove more material than i care for. Look into venev diamond resin stones too.

@@Jef yeah I actually never heard of the gritimatic stones before but if you recommend them more then the dmt I guess I'll check them out, or the diamond resin plates you mentioned. I've always used belts but what you're doing here really seems much better for harder steel's. How long did it take you to become proficient in freehand sharpening?

Loved the video Jef but missed the voice! How are the Haidu stones compared to your beloved gritomatic?
@Jef
@Jef 3 жыл бұрын
If I had never tried Gritomatic, I would say the Haidu stones, are the best Sic stones available. Esp at the price point. I've heard from a few others there may be some quality issues with them, but nothing some loose sic powder, and a little lapping, can't fix. That being said, Gritomatic makes the best Sic stones, hands down. They aren't quite as hard as the Haidu, although they are hard enough. Since they release abrasive faster, they cut faster. Plus, they seem to be available world wide, where the Haidu stones, are extremely difficult to get, over here in the U.S.

Nice work Jef especially considering how badly chipped it was. 👌

Right on! I'll have to check out your channel. I have been beating on mine at work for several weeks. The edge seems to hold up well enough, but I keep having to splice how lines, which results in the damage I showed in the video. Otherwise, it seems to be doing extremely well.

Nicely done, those were some nasty looking chips. In use how does Rex45 compare to Maxamet?
@Jef

I haven’t used it enough really to compare yet. I keep frying the edge on power 😂

@@Jef that sounds like it might make for an interesting day. I've hit a hot wire a couple of times, always gets my attention .

We only have about 90v running through our cable, and a max of 20 amps. It isn't a lot, although it can bite the hell out of you, if you are not expecting it. Steel just turns to puddy when it comes in contact. Unfortunately, we are often having to splice, hot lines, in order to restore services. Just one of those things we motor through.

Hey Jef - I'm considering getting some gritomatic sic stones after seeing your videos. Do they dish relatively fast? And, in terms of flattening: does lapping on glass and loose sic work like other stones? Cheers!
@PotatoCheese
@PotatoCheese 3 жыл бұрын
nevermind, saw in one of your videos that loose sic grit does work. Great to know
@Jef
@Jef 3 жыл бұрын
Yup loose grit is the best way to flatten and condition ANY stone. Including diamond resin and vitrified, like venev, naniwa, and the stuff triple b sells. It works on ALL stones. Oil stones, naturals, synthetic, and even arks. The gritomatic for me do not dish quickly. I’ve had others tell me the 120 and 240 wore fairly fast, but i just haven’t experienced that. They do sell a set that is even harder than the standard versions i show. Not sure how they work since i haven’t tried em. Imo, they wear about as fast as shapton pro. Maybe a hair faster.

Did you end up trying this steel on diamond stones? I remember the last vid with it you'd said it was giving your gritomatic stones a hard time.
@Jef
@Jef 3 жыл бұрын
Yes. Other than the toothy edge that diamonds are known for, there wasn’t much difference between it and the sic. The sic just takes a little longer

What is the dotted pattern / scratch on clip (olden eath colorado) side?
@Jef
@Jef 3 жыл бұрын
Where the chip was? Along the side of the blade? If so that was caused by a hot cable. Electricity was running thru it, which is what caused the damage

Absolutely. DMT will sharpen anything :) They are not my first choice, but there is no denying, they work. Some of my keenest edges came from DMT and Spyderco ceramics.

whatching this video makes me feel stupid sitting there for an hour or longer sharpening a knife, was the burr a problem using these or did it get it off ok
@Jef
@Jef 3 жыл бұрын
Dude, I edited the shit out of this video. Trust me, it wasn't really done in 6 minutes flat :p The burr wasn't a problem. It formed on both stones, but was easily removed, with just a few alternating passes. Anything that remained, the strop took care of
