• Knife Sharpening - Spy...
Sharpening this guy was a bit tougher than I had anticipated. This was due to Spyderco's choil area, and the fact the edge is off center. Consequently, one bevel size, is larger than the other. It can be corrected, but will take several sharpening, to get things into alignment. Otherwise, you have to remove a lot of steel, which is needless, as it doesn't really affect the performance, to any noticeable degree.
S110V was fairly wear resistant. I could really see this when I transferred to my polishing stones. There was almost not steel removal, or swarf development, on the stones. This was my first go with this stuff, and I am pleased with the results.

I have a question about stropping and green compound. What does it leaving a green tint to the edge of the blade mean? Is it not rubbed into the leather enough?
@Jef
@Jef 4 жыл бұрын
Not a big deal. Green compound usually rubs off on the blade at some point. Almost all compounds do. It is why I always wipe my blade after stropping. If it bothers you, use less compound, and when you do use it, really scrub it into the leather. Take another piece of leather, or even a paper towel, and rub any excess off. Lastly, make sure you are not putting too much pressure on the knife, as you strop. You should never have more than the weight of your hand. Ideally, even less than that.

Jef Jewell Thank you for the reply. I’ll give it another go with the advice you’ve given me. I was just reading into it a little more and people were saying less is more with stropping, so I’ll definitely consider that with how much pressure I should apply.

What is the first stone, and grit used in this video. Also what do you suggest for sharpening D2 steel?
@Jef
@Jef 2 жыл бұрын
I put all that info in the description. I recommend these stones, or diamonds, for good heat treated D2. China D2, you can get away with most Alum based stones. The better stuff, is more abrasion resistant, and requires better abrasives, in my experience. Your mileage may vary, of course. Very impressive sharpening, have you ever used a guided sharpening system?
@Jef
@Jef 6 жыл бұрын
Yes several. I currently own an Edge Pro Apex, and have arriving this week, a Hapstone v7. There are a few videos on my channel showing the Epa, as well as an angle guide from Naniwa, for freehand. I've used Lansky and Kme before. They are ok, but I found the clamps get in the way when you go shallow, more often than not.

hello ! Naniwa pro (chosera) can sharpen s110v steel ?
@Jef
@Jef 5 жыл бұрын
Naniwa, may work, but I do not know for certain. The 3k and 5k, did very little cutting, when I tried them against s110v. My gut says, no

Hey have u seen the imanishi 150 says it’s an oil stone but it’s a water stone!!!!! I just ordered one it’s only 20 buck and we’re made in 1985 and say oil stone because Americans used to only order oil stones
@Jef
@Jef 6 жыл бұрын
Shapton Pro website states you can use them with oil ~shrug~ It is pretty inert. Doubt it can harm the bond in stones. I just don't wanna guinea pig my own to test it :p

How,would you say the edge pro apex compares to the wicked edge?
@Jef
@Jef 6 жыл бұрын
I've never used the wicked edge. It is a clamped system, and having the ability to move the knife has benefits. Esp when dealing with tips and belly areas. The wicked edge can compensate, but it takes knowledge and practice. Look for a sharpened blade, with a very wide bevel around the belly and tip. Sebenza's are notorious for this. It is usually due to a clamped system. The wicked edge is also insanely expensive. I'd learn how to free hand sharpen, and save that money for better stones.
