I'm curious what type of wheel you were using on the grinder. Also wondering if the warthog honing steel doesn't work well. It's my understanding that honing is only supposed to align the edge and not remove blade material. I was hoping that worked so that I wouldn't have to go messing with a steel rod.

It was just a cotton buffing wheel. And yes, the polishing stones on the warthog do a fine job. The buffing wheel is just a little quicker for me.

@@spencerstricklandOk, thanks a bunch for your review. So far the Warthog sharpener has done a good job or even great job on the few knives I tried it on. One thing I don't like about the unit though is having to change out the honing rods. I came to the conclusion that once I got all my knives sharpened, I could keep mostly the honing steel rod in there and hone each knife when I use it. But in a practical sense, I'm not sure if things will work out that way or not. One thing I'm considering doing is completely removing the blade guide/logo at the bottom of the unit. I don't mind the blade guide, but that giant circular logo gets in the way of viewing the blade degree marks and also of just putting the hones in place. I'm surprised nobody has mentioned that before. If none of that vertical connector to the circular logo were there, it would be so much easier to replace the honing rods. I'll update if I try that out.

There's two things to note. First, the right-hand spring knob from the factory was unscrewed too much such that the "V" where I insert the blade was a very narrow space where the knife blade would be inserted, sliding along the guide on the left. I didn't realize that screwing it in would actually widen the V area so that I didn't keep hitting the top of the hone connector on the way down in the sharpening stroke. Widening that V space made a huge difference; much easier to use now. Second, I did remove the blade guide piece and that darned circular logo. Man what a difference. I can actually add and remove the hones much more easily. With the wider "V", I also don't need the blade guide and I don't scrape up the sides of the knife blade either. So those two things made me a much happier Warthog customer. I'm now Hogwarts. I'm also going to use gun sight paint to paint the inset blade degree numbers so that I can see them. I have some nice flourecent green sight paint I'll dab in there with a toothpick or something so I can hopefully read the degree marks from a foot and a half away.

Haha very nice upgrades! I may have to try some of those mods on mine! Honestly, I think I’ve modified almost every knife sharpening device I’ve ever bought. It must be a part of life lol

@@spencerstrickland I think we "tinkerers" have no choice; it's in the blood. :-) Have a nice holiday and thanks again for the nice video.

What happened to 15degrees?

@@DN-kz7xl my sharpeners are the older version that does not have the new 15* angle. I wish they did!

@spencerstrickland Thanks.

You shouldnt get a wire edge because you're sharpening both sides at the same time
@spencerstrickland3 жыл бұрын
In theory yes, but it’s difficult to hold it perfectly straight up and down. I don’t mind a slight wire edge just so I know the two angles have came together.

@@tombspider1990I don't understand. The hones come to a V. That has to mean that grinding is happening on each side simultaneously.
